That is my feeling on it, never mind the whole involvement factor: a sperm donor is required for conception only while a surrogate needs to be dealt with and hidden for almost a year.

You're thinking of it w/ too much of a modern prospective. If you think back to just early 1900 bank robbers the likes of John Dillinger openly hid amongst the people. There was no cell phones, cameras, etc... it was much easier to hide someone. That was only in the 1900s back in the era of DA it would be even easier. They could hide the woman on a farm hold where there would be next to no likely hood of anyone ever coming by. Have someone there to take care of her needs and when the time was close bring her into the castle as a servant in the night.

What are you doing to get that choice? Did you take Shale w/ you to Caridin?

Discovery can happen in either case. The only time it's a serious problem is if the child isn't a real heir, as in not Alistair's

Impregnating another woman and everyone knowing about it would be somewhat humiliating for the queen. Why do you think they called a child born out of wedlock illegitimate? Besides, I heard someone say that there is an army of Maric bastards, so lets find one of them and have them impregnate the queen. Or we could just sit back at let it lie, because having no heir at all is a good thing from a gaming perspective, possible plot for DA2.errant_knight wrote...

If you ask if she remembers anything before the village. Prior to reading TST I had always thought she was referring to the great battle with the darkspawn during Caridin's time but she is actually referring to the war w/ Orlais.

It doesn't matter if it's humiliating for the queen. That has no bearing on it. The heir needs to descend through the royal line, ie, through Alistair. Attempting to foist another man's kid would lead to more problems in the long run that just adopting someone to be the heir. It is the deception that would anger people, not the being a bastard part.

PC, "His wife?"
Shale, "Hmph. Once I was larger. Ten feet tall. Then that loathsome hag complained I couldn't fit through the doors. So the mage had me shrunk down! Shrunk down! Can you believe it? And she still wanted me out!"

And about the heir thing- It is a better set up (not for the good of Ferelden) for the good of the gaming world to not have an heir at all. It sets up for a possible awsome DA2, civil war or some such. It may suck, but um this is dark fantasy. That is my final opinion. I will no longer argue about how an heir could be made, I will let you all discuss that.

It would be really simple. Alistair uses a surrogate. Kingdom finds out. King and Queen have a staged public spat, because his "mistress" dropped off his "bastard heir". Maric had one, Cailan may even have one, it happens. King and Queen work things out, and raise baby Theirin.

Would be shocked if he didn't if he inherited daddy's swimmers. Maric basically knocked Rowan up the moment they settled down and he knocked Fiona up in one go.

Oh, I agree that there won't be an blood heir for the next game. I am totally cool with that. That's what fanfic is for. My money is on a Fergus kid being the next heir, but we shall see.

Maybe he did. Maybe thats why no heirs are ever mentioned. Plot fodder for the future. Cailan Jr is ticked off and tries to steal the throne from whomever is sitting on it. Amid darkspawn doing something unusual of course, so the wardens must help.

ANYWAY! No more heir discussing for me. The last post by Lady is good enough I say.

And yeah, I suspect that there won't be an heir no matter what you do for the next game. I always leaned more toward the selection of a successor over an elaborate surrogacy scheme.

But then it wouldn't make for good gaming! I was going for vengeful, angry, air of entitlement unknown hweir to the throne, rebellion, drama...intrigue, assassination plots!
