That's a bit unfair, I think. To be told that and also to paint feminists with the man hating, family/childless brush. It's not about putting anyone down but rather trying to equalize gender perception... what one chooses to do with their life is their business and feminism is about having the choice to be a stay at home mom rather than it being the default for women. I dunno. It's too late for this discussion and my head hurts.

Yeah, I have to agree with yukidama on this. My job pretty much hinges on feminism being something that makes life better for everyone by addressing underlying issues that affect everyone. I do as much work on behalf of women who stay at home (their partners being employees at my institution) as I do on behalf of women who work full-time jobs. I'm about as feminist as they come, and I would never look down on a stay at home parent of either gender.

I like elven lore (although dwarven lore is more interesting to me) and I love the socioeconomic issues that you encounter in the CE origin. The Dalish origin, however, lacks a single character that interests me or makes me care about the life my PC had before the game starts. It's my personality to be a bit irreverent and goofy and the Dalish strike me as a singularly stiff and tedious people. I can understand it, I guess, but I can't cotton onto them in a role-playing sense.

I do think that if you can't convince yourself that your PC and Tamlen care about each other, it's hard to feel it.  But Paivel in particular, and the keeper, communicate an emotional bond, too.  Those are the things I look for and which make it for me.  As far as snark, there is the little bit you have where you can re-work the telling of the Dalish history, which is funny.  And you get to use lots of snark in the later roleplay, if you so choose.   My previous DEF was on the milder side, but I might make this one a bit more of a sparkplug.

I like the dwarf origins, and like dwarven NPCs, but the lore doesn't interest me much and basically I can't take my PC seriously as a dwarf.  I've tried and tried, and got DNF to level 12 or so, but I just can't do it.

This seems topical again!

Ironically enough, I was told this by a former friend who is a guy. Go figure! But, my working would wreak absolute havok on our limited time together, and I know I'm doing the absolute best thing for my kids and hubby, and for me. He's also still single...go figure...lol

It's not about women being superior to men, it's about all of us being the same. A human being is not worse or worth less than another just because they had the ~audacity~ to be born as something that isn't valued more by certain parts society. Aaaanyhoo~

The storytelling bit is the only part of the origin I liked. Even if the NPC's demonstrated some level of care for my PC, I just found their characters to be so lackluster/infuriating (Tamlen) that I can't care as a player. It's my thing; I was born to a family of lovably sarcastic ****s and I need some combination of those traits to make me feel like I belong, I guess.

I've made it through with dwarves, and I love the origins, I just hate being at crotch level in cutscenes.

This is all well and good, but the fact is that feminism is also used as a club in our society and it's particularly annoying to me when it, along with other -isms, are used to nitpick behavior and language.  Just as you don't want feminism unfairly tarnished, to have sexism imputed to harmless comments or behavior or whatnot is hurtful.  And unnecessary.  I know there's a whole theory about institutionalized patriarchy and the oppressiveness of language, etc., but...

but...

can we just get back to naked Alistair?  Yes?

Well, then that deservedly former friend of yours is a douche who can stand to learn a lesson or two in how to treat women like the human beings they are. We are not "supposed" to be anything. We are free to choose our own paths and make our own decisions just as anyone is. We're not stupid!

And hey, the world always needs good mothers. God knows I could have used one. If you are doing what you feel is best for your family, then you continue to do that no matter what some jerkface tells you.

Is that sweet picture of Ali + elven lass yours?  Then I am honored to pixel-meet you.  I stole that long ago and love it.  I did link to your page the first time I posted it, which was ages ago, I'm sorry I've gotten lazy as I just keep throwing it up there when we get talking about Alistair and elves.

Edit:  Oh, I realize you probably mean the comic a few pages back which TotoroTori posted!  I'm still honored to meet you.

No, no, I didn't do that one, it's one of my all time favorites, though. I did the Click Happy comic.

The helmet definitely adds the extra je ne sais quoi.

A trick with the trail signs is that they won't show up on your map in areas you haven't explored yet.  So, it's like SurelyForth said, this is Backtracking 101.  And TAB frequently so you don't miss it.
