your not alone on that 1 i just didn't find zevran very appealing what so ever i've tried about 7 times and just couldn't stick with him too sleezy for my taste, but as a friend he's great

He isn't though, if you go all the way through the romance.

I have to admit, we HAVE had Alistair fan hate in the Zevran thread -- not the good spirited teasing type we try to bring here (Alicorn, weird threesomes, the same things we find funny when Zevran is in them), but downright nasty comments -- both against Zevran (heh, that's no big deal, Zevran is a fictional character who certainly doesn't mind) and about people who would actually enjoy the romance.  We deal with them just like we deal with any other troll -- laugh at them until they leave -- but that's part of what shapes our views.  Some of the comments are downright nasty.

That said, I don't hate Alistair.  I think his romance is beautifully written, heartbreaking, and brings out all sorts of feelings, both good and bad.  It reminds me of the magic of first love.  It's an amazing story.

But I do get irritated when people say Zevran is sleazy, when they think they finished the romance because they got the earring but never ACTUALLY finished it and make all sorts of statements about how shallow it is, etc.  I understand why someone wouldn't like the romance, really; it's gritty, and it can (not necessarily DOES, mind you, as the dialogs support many different things here) start very much seeming to be a FWB situation.  But Zevran isn't sleazy.  He's as faithful as any of the other romance partners once in a relationship.  But you also can't expect a wh*rehouse boy who was trained to use sex as a way to get his marks alone to have the same approach to a relationship as a templar.

But with both, they fall in love completely.  Neither romance is shallow, and many very unfair assumptions are made about Zevran's romance based on the fact that he is fighting falling in love the entire time.  It doesn't help that his dialog was completely bugged at the end either.

Ok, heading back to my rock or something

I didn't try the romance until I heard about ZDF. THEN I went for it, using the guide because dear maker that is one complicated relationship! But in the end, very much worth it.  The only things that bother me, are minor. His dialog when you ask him to your tent after he finally admits he loves you, remains the same as before. I half expected it to be softer ("work, work, work!" ??) And his end slides in both games break it. that whole "for a time" in origins and then the Antiva showdown in awakening (confusion ftw). I do realize thwe Awakening slides were as generic as possible while still mentioning the relationship to make everyone "happy". The Origins one bugs me more.  I can see Zev and my CEF having it out, after all she's been gone for months in Amaranthine, I'm sure with his issues he'd have a problem with that.

If anyone else wants to test, let me know. I'm going in game now but I'll check back in a few.

The ending slides for Zevran aren't great, they're worse for male wardens for sure as well. However, you don't get the "for a time" if you rebuild the grey wardens. I do believe with all the romances except Morrigan's, if you travel or stay in Denerim it's only for a time.

The awakening one... I won't even go there :(

Edit: And yes, it amazes me that they didn't have different dialogs for the tent scene if you waited, especially since they have alternative dialogs for just about every other situation with him, including his "royal scandal" speech.  Dialog Tweaks DOES fix that.  It's not perfect, but it's much better.

*shrug* I like the Cousland origin. To be honest the main reason I played it is because I wanted to play a human rogue. My first game was an elf mage but her file got corrupted so I never got to finish her. When I played those times I didn't even know about the whole breakup scenario, much less aware of all the superiority complexes or hatred over it until after I had finished 2 HN runs and a mage. *shrug* So I think my enjoyment of my playthroughs prior to finding out just what sort of wankery and idiocy goes on regarding them has overshadowed any resentment. It's your game you play it however you want and I'll play it however I want.

I don't understand why one group has to act like they are somehow better for preferring to play one origin or why one group sees another as spoiled brats for the same reason. It's all a choice. You weren't born a Cousland or a Dalish elf or an Aeducan. You chose to play one. For example, my first inclination was not to play a dwarf. I've gone through about 5 full runs without playing a dwarf past Ostagar. But I am trying now, because I want to get all perspectives and maybe I'll enjoy it and get over my hatred of Orzammar (being underground/confined spaces scares me). But it seems people get stuck firmly in one camp or the other and miss out on a lot of cool stuff because of it.

Their loss. I'm not gonna bother getting upset or annoyed on the internet because someone doesn't like or doesn't want to play my favorite origin or romance my favorite LI.

I need intravenous coffee.

I don't understand all of the Alistair hate.  Then again I don't see him as a wimp or a whiner.  I see him as a young naive man that has lead a sheltered existence.

Hmm..coffee <3 *drinks one*

The Alistair hate confuses me, it's beyond my understanding how one can't stand him *meep* Or call him whiny. Because clearly he is not...unlike the player who are complaining about him, that's it. I think D.Gaider called it the 'me, me, what about ME'- attention once. :D

The fangirl image, lol. Funny. They act as if we were as crazy as twilightmoms () and totally childish, whereas their fan being is so mature and sensible. Bullcrap. It's all the same. It's all about having fun and enjoying it. As simple as it is. All the dislike and X is better than Y, is immature and pisses me off.

And I hate people looking down on another for something. Not only in the interwebs.

*is grumpy because off angsty bits she is writing* Posted Image

I can understand the frustration. That's why i've been keeping my distance from the forum for the last week, i find the fan elitism and hate very tiring. I ended up beinging branded a troll, just because someone took a disliking to the fact that i was defending Alistair in the general discussions forum. This isn't aimed at the jokes in the Zevran thread or members who post there, i have a sense of humour and sometimes it can be funny, but let's not forget that both characters came from the same creative mind.

Aha so that's what I done did. I think I chose to stay in Denerim. Must fix that.

The awakening slide really threw me the first time through on my CEF (I'm redoing it, since I re-started her Origin). I couldn't tell if it was Me vs Him in a brawl in Antiva, or Him+Me vs the Crows. I'm leaning towards the second, since the #$%$#%s did steal my effing sword, AND tried to kill me repeatedly in Amaranthine. Plus they mention taking over the crows.

But like I said, love being new to the guy, his woman runs off to Amaranthine without him for however many months, there's bound to be some friction upon her return. Maybe he got mad that she left without him and went back. But I prefer my theory:D

It occurs to me, I can't remember who asked who...hmmm. Guess my mage will find that out. So much for ending the game single. Or I need to do my next Cousland with Zev, and try the political marriage thing.

The tiny fangirl in me is going WHHHYYYY do all the Couslands have the awesome kisses with Alistairs and WHHHHHY do all the dwarves have awesome kisses with Zevran? Why can't we smash the two together and salvage an awesome dwarf kiss with Alistair?! I can stand on Zevran to pull it off, np!

OTOH, many of us around here are partial to the Alistair-elf pairing.

Here. I'm totally devoted to my Dalish. Mahariel/Alistair is my favorite pairing by far. For me it has much more spice than the human noble relationship cuz of teh drama ensured, the different world thing and all those tasty things <3 Also Ali is an elf magnet after all...in both directions :wizard: Cousland was fun for once but it  has only half the appeal my elf has. I would always go back playing an elf, but one Queen Cousland is enough for me. It get's boring too fast. (imo)

I'm morbidly curious about this Cousland dreck everyone talks about, but I think I'll just pass.

Well let's say there are things on FF.net you click on, read a bit and then click the back botton as quick as you can.

*hugs her F!Mahariel/Alistair story*

Doesn't help that this fandom is littered with very bad Princess Cousland fanfic. Can't play the origin without feeling disgusted with myself.

Once again I find myself glad that I don't read fanfiction.  You're the 2nd person I've read say this very thing.

I tend to steer clear of "romantic" fanfiction myself.  It seems littered with the smuttiest garbage of this or that MarySue/GaryStu character getting it on with Alistair/Zevran (and a host of other NPCs whoever has a fan following) regardless of characterization or storyline.  For me the worst culprits are the wish fulfillment fics with characters behaving in a manner COMPLETELY contrary to how they are depicted in the game (or movie if its aboiut movie characters).

Basically, ditto. I may RP a bit with my own characters but I just... I don't especially care to read about other people's characters in detailed stories. I do like seeing people post bits about their characters' perspectives on the boards but that's about the extent of my interest :x Then again, I don't read any fanfic in general even with established characters that do not depend on the player's input for personality.

I'm guilty of fanfic. It does have my Brosca bonin' Zevran, but it's not the plot. Romance= subplot. I've even written some Alistair/Aeducan shenanigans, I appear to have no shame...

^ This.

Holy crap.  I try so, so hard to keep characters in character and then you find a story that just makes everything...wrong.  *cries*

Yes, the Cousland origin is my favorite.  Yes, that is where my fic lies b/c I am very comfortable with the material.  And yes, I do enjoy romance in my stories, but I'm always of the belief there has to be something else to the story beside sexytimes and kisses.  That being said, I rp all my characters and have written stuff for more origins (even though it might never see the light of day).  They are human and are fallable.  They make mistakes.  There is no "perfect" ending, but there are endings which are perfect for the characters.  Why this seems foreign to some people is beyond me.

We just need to brace ourselves for the death-porn binge that Alistair haters are no doubt going to go on when the new DLC comes out. I think LadyDamodred has the right idea, that we pre-empt it and take out the sting by posting shots and talking about it here. I have to admit that if there is even one new line of Steve Valentine talking in the DLC, I might be tempted to pay the 5 bucks and suffer the indignities.
