He elevated Arl Howe after knowing what he did to your family! I don't see how I could justify saving him. Giving him time to make his peace, whatever. That wouldn't fit into a game. But I just can't spare him! And I can't execute Alistair just for being Maric's son.

My HNF character was a little star-struck by the Hero of River Dane, but when Loghain announces Howe as the Teyrn of Highever to your face, that pretty much seals his fate for my HN characters. He never has a chance with my elves. I don't hate the character, really, but neither do I have any doubt he deserves what he gets. I wonder if he ever thinks about what his father would say about what he's done. Maybe that is part of those mournful, tired looks we see him giving in the cutscenes.

I would say fundamentally irrational, but not illogical. As in, it's logically possible, but it's not rational.
