I think what I don't like is Bioware's implication that Alistair was just going to fall for the first woman who batted her eyelashes at him. Didn't matter who. This in the midst of an overall cheapening of the material, so I'm disgusted with the creation as a whole right now, not with the characters in particular.
Maybe it's my misreading of the Alistair romance to begin with. Some have posited it as shallow. I mean, he does say that he fell for your PC because you were thrown together. So it makes me think that the people who thought the romance was keyed to be shallow and puppy-dog might have had the right of it after all.
This is even assuming that the Origins writers had any say in anything in the DLC. I'm not sure if I would rather hear that they did or they didn't.
But he's not falling for the first woman who bats her eyelashes at him. In the absence of the PC, Leliana would fill a comparable role. It's the same as the PC falling in love with any of the companions, really, and I wouldn't call that cheap, I would call it fairly realistic.
And when he says things about you being thrown together, it's him hedging his bets a bit, trying to downplay how much the PC means to him. He's putting himself Out There and he doesn't want to look totally foolish. If he was going to fall in love with any woman who was along for the ride, approval wouldn't matter and he'd be as willing to nail someone at Neutral as he is at Adore and he wouldn't really bother breaking up after the Landsmeet because the relationship/Warden wouldn't mean enough to him that his inability to commit for the longterm would be a problem.
Aww, SurelyForth, you just made me feel better about the whole Alistair/Leliana thing (which I still hate...). But yay, I do feel better about it.
