Our IT Guy (whom I, with great hatred, refer to as the IT Troll) quit about 2 months ago during a server migration, leaving a mess behind (he didn't quit because of the migration, he just was a poor communicator and never considered the consequences of his actions; he only gave two weeks notice KNOWING we were going into a migration). His mess included a couple of projects that have languished on his desk for months, and in one case, years. I inherited them.
They were not IT projects; they were catalog projects he was working on (as Production Coordinator, he reported to me on catalog work; our company isn't large enough for a full-time IT guy). Now, one of the projects is in a piece of proprietary software in which I have not worked for at least 20 months. He provided me with no documentation and only a one paragraph e-mail telling me what I needed to do on it. My only knowledge of the project was just general information about what it was supposed to entail gleaned from several conference calls (the most recent of which was about six months ago). Naturally, I was not happy with this arrangement. There was no one to whom I could delegate this project (cutbacks in this crappy economy have reduced my department to me and one other employee, and she's assigned to an ongoing project I can't disrupt by reassigning her).
I loathed the situation. I referred to the project as "Troll Droppings" on my desk. I wanted to quit. But, it's hard to find a job in this economy, and there are few in this city to begin with for someone with my skill set. Relocating isn't a realistic option for someone at my point in my career and life situation.
Yesterday, I got a call from the client saying they've given it a lot of thought, and considering where our IT Troll left us they wanted to pull the project and finish it up in house. They were very careful to make sure I knew they didn't consider it a reflection on our company; they just felt it would be less expensive to them this way.
I feel as though a great weight has been lifted from my shoulders.
And because my life seems to want balance. I just spilled coffee on my desk.

When a thread is revived and normal discussion is resumed, why would you need to lock it? What gives? Even if the original poster might have moved on... it is no reason to lock it. Once it is created, it is property of all to see and supplement, thus demonstrating your lock-balls-abilities is unnecessary.
