Hello everyone. As you can see, this message topic is about ways that we could make spears and Polearms a viable usuable item in dragon age Origins utilizing preexisiting animations and codings. I would like to hear ideas, and this discussion is specifically meant to explore such options in depth.

A List of animations associated with the toolset can be found here on Beerfish 's profile: http://social.biowar...oject/30/#files Its under the excell utilities and is listed as DAAnimationsListingv2.xls.

My Ideas for a Simple One Handed Spear Animation:

Spears are used for stabbing and jabbing mostly. Two kinds of animations come to my mind when that happens:

The "Backstabbing" Animation: I'm thinking that simply decreasing the "Momentum" or speed asscociated with the animation and you've got yourself a good starting point.

The Mages Staff attack animation: I'm thinking that this would be perfect for a slower jabbing attack in close range.

The thrusting and impaling Finishing Moves: These would be perfect with a spear.

The Problem is, I have a hard time finding these animations for the Toolset. Another is that I'm having a hard time linking the animations together properly with a shield. Can anyone help me utilize these?

 My Ideas for a Simple Two Handed Polearm animation:

I suppose you could simply use the axes animations, but that does little to differentiate between the items.

Is there any way to create custom animations to use this?

Any Ideas for stats on these things?

And where would we design the weapons? Is there a utility to make them and import them?

for animations it would be best to ask eshme about her project. she/he wrotes an animation im- and exporter, so i guess you should be able to create new animations.

The axe or even two handed sword animations for polearms would suffice - it may not differentiate a whole lot to some, but the mere fact that I SEE I'm wielding a polearm instead of the typical 2H Axe or 2H Sword is a huge step in the right direction to me.

Stats would be easier to decide if melee distance seemed to make a difference in the game, aside from attack angle. Maybe with consideration to attack angle in game mechanics, that could lead to further thought on how to make polearms unique? Back to the Stats - for Polearm, especially with weapons like glaives, naginatas, or even heftier types - I imagine the damage would be similar to 2H Axe and 2H Sword range. The polearm can easily have a blade the size of a 2h Axe, but has a longer reach, and thus; when swung it has a larger arc than other 2h weapons which gives it greater potential for higher damage and armor penetration. However, if an enemy is closer in, then the arc is negated.

Spears would be very fast and would deal less damage than heavier polearms, but would probably have higher attack rating and potential for critical hits.

So off the cuff:

POLEARM:
=======
Damage: 13 - 18 (depending on metal, etc)
Crit Chance: 2 - 3
Armor Pen: 9 - 12 (second only to hammer, due to larger arc and potential to dmg armor compared to 2h sword/axe)
Str Mod: 1.25 (like 2H Hammer due to length and cumbersome)

SPEAR:
======
Damage: 10 - 12
Crit Chance: 5 - 7
Armor Pen: 2 - 4
Str Mod: 1.0 (light and fast)

I came up with the above numbers after comparing a variety of good 2H Swords, 2H Axes, 2H Hammers (for Polearm), 1H Swords & Axes (for Spear, which is slightly better than 1H weapons cause 2 hands are on it, and due to that, is faster than most other melee weapons, excepting dagger types). I balanced it all out, of course, with no favoritism going to either camp. I posted this to give ideas, and hope it helps in some small way.

By way of comparison, here are some of the average numbers I came up with for higher end 2H weapons from Awakening:

2H AXE:
======
Damage: 13.5 - 19 (14 being lower end of better 2H axes, etc)
Crit Chance: 4 - 6
Armor Pen: 5 - 7
Str Mod: 1.10

2H SWORD:
=========
Damage: 15 - 20
Crit Chance: 2 - 3
Armor Pen: 5 - 7
Str Mod: 1.10

2H HAMMER:
==========
Damage: 12 - 16
Crit Chance: 0.5 - 1
Armor Pen: 14 - 16
Str Mod: 1.25
