Although I haven't talked to him in awhile, I think I remember him saying these three things...
-he hails from Denerim
-hes a knight of Redcliffe
-he has a wife in Highever with a child on the way

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems he's a travellin' man...Posted Image

He goes where the action is. Where duty takes him! Not one place shall chain Ser Jory down!

Jory said he was a knight from Redcliffe, but was recruited in Highever, where he'd received permission from the arl to serve temporarily.  He met his wife there, and she has remained there awaiting the birth of their child, although he'd been trying to convince her to move to Redcliffe.  He seems to think that being a Grey Warden is a temporary thing, like being a mercenary, and that he'll go back to her with no ill effects after this pesky Blight is taken care of.  Poor sod.

Daveth was the one recruited in Denerim, although he'll tell you that he originally comes from a tiny village about a day east of the Korcari Wilds.

Maybe not chain him down, but Duncan sure impaled him with his sword pretty easily. If Duncan had not killed him, I'm sure he'd be tough enough to survive the joining having experience as a knight an all.

Yup totally tough, when a mouse fart scared him.

I doubt that he would have passed the joining since he was a coward after all. Plus if he did survive I sure as hell would not have taken him to face the Archdemon in the end, and neither would I have left him in charge of the gate. No I would have tasked him out to be the last stand for the larder at Redcliff so we all have food when we returned from battle. Anyone that keeps trying to convince everyone to give up on their duty (to include a duty they willing excepted in Highever) does not belong in the rule of a knight. Daveth had more backbone than him and he was a theif.

I don't know if surviving the Joining has anything to do with bravery, so perhaps he would have survived. I still think Duncan should have known better than to recruit him. Which is one of the reasons, "What would Duncan do?" is not high on my Warden's list of questions when dealing with decision.

You never thought you were going to relate that song to him before did you?
