Dragon Age was a long time coming. The first hints of it that we got were all the way back in 2004. There wasn't much information at the time, no more than a couple of screenshots and some concept art. For all you newcomers to Bioware, here's a look at the game that almost was...

(The class for the male character, by the way, was "Barbarian". I have a couple of wallpapers around somewhere, but am feeling too lazy to dig them up right now.)

Ha :) I remember these two screenies from some magazine. Wow it was really loong time ago. Where did you just dig this pics OP x)? Still look somehow amazing. Very detailed interiers, oh and just look that barbarian and details on him..cool beard, tattos on his chest, cool armor! I guess that woman next to him sopuse to be human mage? And wow I like her cloth alot and staff :(. Have some Baldurish Gate feeling aswell on second screenie. In my opinion bodies of these two look much more normal than on DA chars which we have today too :s.

I don't know, running around in a bathrobe and pantaloons doesn't really strike me as any more realistic nor practical...

Those are magic pantaloons. ;) But seriously, Drakensang's outfits tend to be more typical fantasy fare which is why I think they were posted. DAO tries too hard to create its own style in mage gear and look at where that went. :P

What happened to mage head gear that didn't make me gag?

Why would you put a hat in your mouth?

Man I'm glad they didn't keep this design, looks too much like his main power comes in the form of a certain Genie from Disney.

That's not from Dragonage concept arts, it's another game (Drakensang), and that's a robe specific to the race of arabian-like mages. Still, the first 2 ones I posted (normal and common human mages robes, in that game) are still the best design in regard of "realistic look".

Looking at those over again now, it seems like Dragon Age was original slapped together on some form of upgraded Aurora engine. The way those two are standing and holding their items is identical to Neverwinter Nights.

That was, in fact, a mock up using the NWN engine.  It was a proof of concept type of thing.

Also, I'm apparently the only person in the world who likes the mage robes (I'm not fond of the hats, but I don't hate them as much as most people seem to.)

That explains it then. As for robes, I kinda sorta like the default outfit as far as mage outfits go. It's nothing to write home about but good enough. It's the others I'm not thrilled about, as well as a lack of variety. I can stand the small hat. I don't wear them on my characters but I can stand them. The conehead hats are horrid though.
