I have played Mass Effect 2 on this computer before and I had to uninstall it because it was on my SSD and it was filling up so I put it on my gaming harddrive but now I cant run it.  When I press the Play button my screen flashes and it was windows closed it.   I read a prevoius persons post but it happened to him due to not having a video card.  I am running a HD4890, 8 gigs ddr3, 955BE @ 3.75ghz.  As I have said it ran before on this computer but now it doesnt.  Should I reinstall or is it an easy fix?

Just installed the newest drivers for my video card and the Mass Effect 2 1.01 patch and it still crashes on start up. Any other fixes you can think of?

Have you edited the coalesced.ini? IF you have and done so incorrectly this can prevent the game from opening.

Wait, just looking over your OP, you didn't just drag and drop the entire game from your SSD to you hard drive did you?

That's what I'm wondering as well. Have you tried reinstalling?

Yeah, I reinstalled it to my gaming hard drive. Didn't drag and drop. I also uninstalled it since then and reinstalled and i get the same error. Don't know what the coalesced.ini is. Haven't touched it.

EDIT: I have tried my other games and all seem to work fine.  Even jst installed Left 4 Dead 2.  Works like a charm.

maybe you should delete the game and make sure you delete the registry file, then reinstall.

Did you do a proper uninstallation from the SSD? Or did you just delete the bioware folder?

To delete the registry file go into search and find 'regedit' open it, be careful not to delete anything else, Go to Computer -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE ->BIOWARE -> Mass effect 2 (delete it, make sure there's no duplicate mass effect 2 folders) then install game again.

I just uninstalled the game from control panel again and went to check the regedit. I went where you said and didn't see a bioware folder. I'll wait to reinstall it again since it probably wont work anyways. Any think else that you can think of? I am really at a loss here.

Do you have windows 7? Are you logged in/game installed as administrator? Do you have Zonealarm or a similar firewall? I ask about the firewall because ZA's program control can autodeny the computer from allowing the exe to run. You are using the game launcher correct? Have you tried using the ME2 exe to start the game?

Yeah, I am always logged in as the admin. Its win7 64bit. It worked before on my computer but the install to reinstall on my game drive seemed to stop it from working. I am reinstalling it again now and going to see what happens.

This might sounds dumb but I am shooting in the dark here. When I install it I have 2 CD drives. I started with dick one in my top one the first time and it made me put the second in my second cd drive. It wouldn't see it in the same one as one. So this time I did the opposite. Could it be that I am using two CD drives to install?

I doubt the dvd drive is the issue, unless it's dying, or causing read errors. Are other games working fine with the drives?

I play a lot from steam but I just put in dragon age in both drives and it runs fine. Just finished my reinstall. Still giving me the same error. I tried running it straight from the exe also.

And you reapplied the 1.01 patch, how about the firewalker DLC (it updates the 1.01 patch)?

try right-clicking on the mass effect 2 exe then click run as administrator (Don't use the exe from the Games folder use the exe from the main directory in the install dir.

don't worry about the regedit, although it should display the mass effect 2 folder when it is installed.

For your ATI card, are you using the newest driver 10.3?

no, there should only be one mass effect 2 folder in the registry.

Are you using a crack or a legal copy?

Positive, got it the day it came out from Amazon.

well if you are using a crack then make sure it's not for version 1.00 if you have applied the patch. Use the crack for version 1.01 if you have already applied the patch. You can find it at megagames.com -> game fixes.

I paid for the game I shouldnt have to crack it to work. Anyways, in the process of upgrading and gonna paint the case of my computer. As of now my gaming rig is housed in half of an old alienware case, cardboard, and a bunch of duct tape. Ha. Gonna up date the firmware on my SSD and reinstall windows so it will be like a brand new comp once my new MB comes in. Gonna keep this thread open and saved so I can get back to you. Thanks for the help, hopefully I will be saving the universe soon.

I usually crack my games so I don't have to use the dvd, it's just more convenient.

Hmm try moving your monitor cable to the next port in your video card, if you have 4 ports make sure its the one next to it and not under. I had some problems because that is due to a worn out port or damage on the video card and changing ports fixed it for now.

Well I put my computer back together but I have yet to reinstall windows7. I have been scouring the net to try to find a solution but I have no such luck. Question though, where are my saved games located from an uninstall the first time?
