So I did the Mage's Tower quests, beat the bad guys, saved the tower and I found Godwin on the way through and left him in his little closet. Now I have been to Dust Town and got the quest to take the lyrium to him. I go back to the tower and I cannot find him. What the heck??
Does he actually die if I leave him there and don't send him back if I have cleared the way? Or is he somewhere else?

Did you side with the mages or the templars at the end? If you sided with the templars, then no Godwin for you. Otherwise, he should be standing next to his cupboard on the second floor.

You mean left him without talking to him? If that is the case then yes, he will disappear. You have to initiate dialogue with him while saving the tower for him to stay afterwards. Why? No idea, but I learned this the hard way on one of my playthroughs.

No, I talked to him, went through all the dialogue and he went back in his closet. I searched the tower top to bottom when I went back. And I mean all the way to the top room and had to fight the boss again. That happened to anyone else, taking Uldred on a second time?? Anyway, Godwin is gone. And I am stuck with a sack of lyrium that cost me 40 gold and can only re-sell for 12. Grrrr.

Wait, what? Uldred was there again at the top of the tower? Um... never heard of that before how strange. That probably bugged your game somehow and I would wager a guess that is why Godwin isn't appearing. Appears you are stuck with it, just sell the lyrium and take the 28 gold loss.

Yep, he was upstairs again when I went up to the top room you face him in the first time. That actually happened on my other game with my Rogue and I went back upstairs and he was there again.

Have you tried exiting the tower and returning to it, then looking for Godwin? Failing that, you may need to reload from an earlier save.

Yeah that won't work considering how much farther along I am. Guess I'll just have to do it next time.

If the puny Mage is gone you can sell the lyrium to anyone (Bodahn for instance). It will complete the quest and you will be able to interact with the nasty duster who gave you the quest next time you visit Orzammar.

You'll lose some of your investment but not all of it and you'll complete the quest (and you'll get the opportunity for a friendly chit chat with the ugly dwarf who offered you this deal).
