Is it just me or is that one of the most obnoxious father-figure acts on the internet?
Let's have a proper discussion about attitude of moderating various types of boards.

What do you think is the most effective relationship moderators should have with the community?
Close and friendly, risking a lack of respect.
Fatherly and condescending, maintining order but not necesarily morale?

Where is the middle ground?

Is it perhaps, a matter of change from community to community, or what type of forum you're running.

You take that back, or the spores of a billion orks will rain down upon your mother.

Stanley Woo is the middle ground.

End of Line.

I think end of line means exactly that...end of line. If he determines a thread is full of spam, it gets closed. Pretty clear.

But then again folks take offense at some pretty odd things, like for awhile, they were on about Chris' little devil face that he uses in his postings.

Each moderator has their own style. I highly doubt any of it is "condescending" or "fatherly". That just depends on how you ..personally read it.

Frankly, I wish these moderators were a little more stern. There are quite a bit of inappropriate threads and posts made by people on this forum who seemingly never get punished, aside from having the thread locked.

I also disagree with your summation that the quote, "End of line," is obnoxious or parental. Most moderators on various forums use some one-liner when they are closing a topic. This one doesn't stand out as being inappropriate in any way.

I think that the mods here are fine, but there are people around (I won't name them) who constantly derail threads or spam topics and it won't get anywhere near ending if they're still around.

Huh. I must be a complete sweetheart then. The last time I locked a thread with a "one liner" I would much rather have ripped the eyeballs of some particularly obnoxious spammer. It was my way of saying "**** you, can't touch this". I guess I read that into all one liners.

Actually, I had this problem with a user yesterday.

He was the user "Santa Clause" and he was posting a lot of crap and harrasing a lot of other user and being really disruptive.

I PM'd Woo and linked all of the threads and all of the garbage he posted, and Woo gave him a suspension/ban.

Well, if the issue is the usage of the "END OF LINE" on all his posts, know that this is actually the way the character "master control program" ends all his speeches, in the movie "TRON", from 1983. Wich happen to be one of Stanley's favorite movies :)

What Feraele and AshedMan wrote pretty much. My personal preference is stricter moderation. I think the moderators these days are too forgiving. That said, I think they do their job fairly. Woo has always been quick to lock threads when I report them, and the one or two times he felt they weren't lock worthy they stayed open. I'm sure they think about whether or not to lock before they do. Also, the moderators here have a sense of humor and every now and then post in a thread.

It's a far cry from some boards I've been to where they come across as aloof and intimidating.

Indeed...the human face of the moderator appears, and the room goes quiet. :P

I never made that connection before. Surprising too, considering Master Control came up in one of Merin's recent polls where I brought up David Warner. Innnteresting. Well, now it comes across as funnier to me. :P

Really?  I always took it as a BSG referrence.  Where the hybrid would babble away (basically spam) and would eventually say, 'end of line.'

If i'm not mistaken that is also used in pre-windows computer programming to tell the system to stop doing something and start another command line.:wizard:

Oh, and to the ones who "are not very fond" of Woo, i recommend visiting his blog (the url is in his profile). Completely changed the way i saw him ^_^

It's from the movie really, Stanley said it himself in a thread about the new tron movie (A lot of time ago)   :)

Cool.  I've never seen Tron so I honestly took it as a BSG referrence.  I guess I'll have to go find Tron to see what that's all about.  Image IPB

There would be no message if I had the power. You would just be missing all your waffles... maybe your pron also. Waffle and porn... now that is a fun saturday night!!

I lay most of the blame on the Bazzar and the off topic forums being its "official" ****, whine, spam, and cry section.

No one forces them to whine like a 5 year old girl like the OP....

They must be hard wired for it.....they probably the same when they run out of juice too...
