I don't think you've had that much experience with five year old girls. I was really going to bail after tha Bazaar, but you're singlehandedly making me want to stay and prove you wrong.

No that is how the guilds and forums in my MMO days were ran. Act like a douchebag and get treated like one.
People give mods a lot of undeserved crap and it is almost always those that think they can run around and do whatever they want. You get a lot of rope on these boards but there is no one else to blame but yourself when your found hung.

That was easy compared to helping out on the forums for a NWN server I DMed in. Officially, my job wasn't to moderate. I merely had those privelages as a staff member. I rarely locked threads or banned people. It was a pain, really, because I had to think carefully before doing anything lest I come across as heavy-handed and abusive of my power. Most of the time I ended up asking someone for a second opinion. It also didn't help that we had no rules defining what was deserving of a lock or ban. Those were bad times...
Being a moderator is at least partly public relations and not an easy job to do in my opinion.

Far as I remember moderating was not an easy job, and its done on a voluntary basis. I have respect for the moderators here, they do what they need to do, when its needed.
I also like that they occasionally pop their heads in to say something funny or factual ..from time to time.

Back when I was an Op on a Mirc channel for an RPG site I worked at, I would give someone a few warnings first. Then I would unceremoniously boot them if they kept up their behavior.

Nope it isn't ..and half the time when you think you've reached a fair and equitable decision..you get accused of being heavy handed anyways, so its definitely a no-win situation. I moderated once for 8 months a long time ago on a roleplay board, frankly..not tempted to do it again.
I like people.

I'm probably the strictest mod in that group, but I've toned down quite a bit in the past week. As for the clan, it's very laid back because we're all fairly good friends (as you can be for people who've never met, except a few people meeting each other here and there).
However, on another forum I visit, we've got very little moderation going on. One of the mods is known to have passed away recently, another is thought to be so, one doesn't visit (ever)... Um... One can be a very, very heavy handed moderator (and not many of us like him nor his attitude), another can be quite the hypocrit and that's really it. I've not seen the third "active" moderator do anything. Oh, and we've got a fourth who doesn't do a lot.
Moderation is so hard to do right though, as I'm sure Himura will agree. What I thought was "good moderating" caused a group member to have a bit of an outrage, and it was deemed I was too heavy handed in my approach. It's honestly why I hate running things; I get extreme.

If that's the attitude you have around whatever forum you run, I'm just glad I haven't had the pleasure of finding it yet. Double check your reading comprehension for me if you would... Because so far you've been butthurt over my supposed whining and completely derailing my thread.

Interesting... A forum I'm part of also had a staff member die not too long ago. I know for sure that he was staff, and more involved in other places though so maybe we're thinking of the same person!

I like people.I don't like verbal abuse however.
Preaching to the choir. I didn't get any serious verbal abuse but it was almost always an uphill battle. Between that and the actual DMing, I ended up burning out quickly and took a month long hiatus before returning. It was that stressful for me. I guess it didn't help I took things more personally back then too.

You have to allow room for the rules to be bent slightly, but you cannot be afraid to put your foot down and stop a discussion. The problem is when do you put your foot down? Do you wait to see if it resolves itself? Do you nip it in the bud if it's a repeat offender? When?

Well, to be perfectly honest...I think it would have been a bit unfair to go through with some of the bans you were proposing. We had just started the group, and we really didn't have any ground rules at the time. Now that we do, things have been (for the most part) much smoother.

Like i use to say: Moderating is easy. Now, moderating with moderation is the tricky part
Not an easy job, that's for sure
