I guess I have to decide if I want Claymore or not. Damage is nice, but I dont want to miss. I'm also playing pretty much on Normal so I figure Evi or Scimitar will work too? If I want distance Heavy Pistol, or Locust will serve me.
Bugger, cant decide what weapon for my Vanguard....

I'd say the eviscerator is fine over the claymore on lower difficulties. Besides that I grabbed an assault rifle because the machine pistols just did not cut it for me.

I took an assualt rifle, but regreted it after getting the locust. So I think the claymore is a good choice.

I took AR cause it makes the vanguard more versatile and fun to play. Don't get me wrong, Claymore is awesome, but sometimes I just want to play around with my Vindicator and pop some headshots before I charge and decimate the leftovers.

I've always had an assault rifle on my Vanguards because like Zatus1310 says, it's great for versatility and takes some of the risk out of playing as a Vanguard. You don't absolutely have to get up close all the time anymore. The downside being that especially at lower difficulties, you can find yourself relying too much on it, which kinda takes the oomph out of playing the Vanguard.
I haven't really played with it extensively yet, but if you have the Kasumi DLC, you may not really want to get the assault rifle because the Locust SMG does the trick at range just fine too, and on normal, I really don't see why you'd need the sniper rifle, so in that case, I'd go with the Claymore.

Following based on insanity...
I agree with Zatus1310 but...
I didnt see the point in making another ass. rifle char as you just end up using that and nothing else whilst hiding behind cover.
Eviscerator works great if you are relatively accurate with the headshot helm (and wear the mele shoulder pads) - turns almost every foe into a 1 shot + 1 mele kill.
I've heard peple say that if you are not accurate then the 8-shot shotgun is better - whichever one that is.
Viper sniper rifle has been a great addition as it fills the gap. Works long and mid range to either thin out the group with a few headshots (along with group powers) prior to charging. Also there are places you just cant charge to - which is again where the sniper rifle excels.
Its also really useful for that mission in headshotting the scions flanking you. Again a situation where you cant charge and the pistol doesnt have the reach and your smg is useless against armour
But everyone has their own playstyle... so make a save and try out a few missions with each weapon.

And then this.
I perfer the Scim over the Evi/Claymore. So going back I would have liked to get the Sniper Rifles.

Claymore is quite annoying to use in anything that's not hardcore/insanity because most of the enemies you encounter fly away when you charge them. (unprotected)

I only play on Insanity, but I regretted picking the Claymore. It's just my preference, but I get much more mileage out of the Eviscerator. The Scimitar is also quite good, especially on normal. I wish I'd taken the Sniper specialty for the Viper-it's quite powerful and shores up a weakness for the Vanguard. ARs are very fun, but if you get the SMG from Kasumi's mission, they kind of become redundant.

My vanguard is on normal, and the Claymore rocks there - I don't regret taking it. However I don't know if I'd use it on Insanity... It's possible I would stick with the Eviscerator and get a sniper rifle to soften up my enemies or get rid of the trash. I should give it a try.

It's a matter of personal preference. Make a save on the Collector Ship and try them all out. They all play differently, but they all get the job done. Here are some examples.
The Scimitar is very forgiving due to its crazy fast fire rate and huge clip size. If you miss a shot or two it isn't the end of the world.
The Katana is commonly overlooked. It's somewhat of a mix of the Scimitar and the Evi. Though it doesn't have a bonus versus armor, it still does a surprisingly good job against it. It decimates shields and barriers.
The Evi is kind of like the sniper rifle of the shotguns, so to speak. It requires more precision than the others, but you can one-shot just about any standard enemy. It packs a punch like the Claymore but requires quicker reflexes as the pellet spread is quite small.
The Claymore is a monster. One of a kind. If you can get the reload trick down, it is definitely something to behold. The spread is huge, so you have to get up close and personal, but even on NG+ with barely an upgrade it's still a force to be reckoned with.
The difference in kill speed is next to nothing. The big difference is how they handle, as you can see from the videos. You can debate all you want, but it really comes down to what feels right in your own hands. Personally, I love the Claymore and Evi equally with the Katana a close second. The Scimitar just doesn't do it for me. But that's just me. Everyone has their preference.
I would not recommend taking assault rifles. Shotguns are a Vanguard's bread and butter. If you choose the Claymore, SMGs or pistols are perfectly fine for the few times that you can't Charge. Alternatively, the Viper is ridiculous. After 100+ hours of Vanguard play I cannot think of a single instance where I wished I had an assault rifle. We have enough tools at our disposal to get the job done already.
Also, check out the sticky for a ton of info and a buttload of videos. You can read and watch all you want but the real factor is how the guns play in your hands. Find what fits you best

Eviscerator is sufficient for veteran and below, but Claymore is better for Hardcore/Insanity. JMO
