Serenity
Its not scifi but since it is on right now American Gangster would be one to look up.
.... How in the Maker's name is Serenity not Sci-fi? You're insane. You are. Must be.
A good choice though.

You misread his post.
The "It's not scifi" was meant for American Gangster.

Oh hey, since you liked Pan's Labyrinth (good for you man) check out Guillermo Del Toro's The Devil's backbone. Cool ghost story set in an orphanage.
Yes, he´s one of my fave directors.
Yes. We had to wait for a Mexican director in order to have a good film on our Civil War. I suppose it takes a neutral party.
Ok, films everybody must see:
Blade Runner (I know some people have already said it, but it's never enough), The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original one!), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the one from 1978), Akira, Forbidden Planet.

Haven't watched that one. I really like El Orphanato. Del Toro is one of my favorites, and he wants to make a Lovecraft film (and is working on pre-production artsy things from what I can find) which makes him even greater in my eyes.
I dig Del Toro's work pretty hard man. He's the kind of director we need more of doing cool, weird, significant films (and his odd pure nerd ones, like the Hellboy movies and Mimic). Can't wait to see what he does with Lovecraft, and I am eager to watch him and Peter Jackson work some magic on The Hobbit film whenever that happens.

The Man From Earth
Not your average sci-fi flick but very good food for thought, if you are into that kind of thing.

i feel like all time travel stories are trite and boring or they are incoherently complicated. i'm looking for a compelling time paradox drama. anyone got something?

Sure it is but i've already seen people quite enraged while watching the story unfold.Kenrae wrote...

I just wanted to clarify that i'm aware that the reactions can be mixed, even here on the forums.

Dunno if its already been mentioned, but A Scanner Darkly is good, kinda sci-fi as in it is set in the future but isn't about sci-fi, rather the effects of drugs and what drives people to become addicted to them. An intriguing look at the mental collapse of an addict.
final fantasy anyone? (just a joke)
in other news, the first 5 star treks ie motion picture, wrath of Kahn (KAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHNNNNNNNN!) search for spock etc

Dude, if Del Toro makes a Lovecraft movie, I think I will be in geek monster heaven...
Now to stay on topic....
These are my pics, most of which people have already listed, hehe.
Event Horizon
The Thing
In The Mouth of Madness (By John Carpenter, the dude who made The Thing. Very influenced by Lovecraft.)
Dark City Director's Cut (Better than the theatrical cut, but either are fantastic.)
The Lost Boys
12 Monkeys
The Fifth Element
Sphere (Based on Michael Crichton novel.)
Pitch Black
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (Much like The Fifth Element, dumb yet fun.)
Enemy Mine
The Last Starfighter

You best not be talking about the film version there boy, the film that is an offense to the work of the creator and most likely to be the cause of his death. I would not wish that on my worst enemies, Douglas Adams must not only be turning in his grave at the affront that is the film, he must be slowly clawing his way out to wreck vengeance upon those who despoiled his work!

Speaking as an avid reader that has yet to actually read any Douglas Adams works, I wouldn't know how badly they butchered the book. If it is as bad as you make it sound, then I sympathize. I know the feeling whenever I hear someone say that Queen of the Damned was good. I usually have to slam my head into something to stop the pain.

Heh yeah, as a reader of the books the film looks like they took the book and then surgically removed all the actual jokes and humour from the story, all the strangeness, and then tacked on a Hollywood ending.
While they are still not as good as the books, the series that was made based on it is actually rather decent and well worth watching.

He died after writing the preliminary draft, while the producers tried to claim otherwise that means he had virtually sod all to do with it (scripts go through dozens of drafts and get rewritten constantly, the original never survives to be made into the film). The scriptwriters just took parts from the books and then murdered them, and I still hold to the belief that it was the producers that drove him to a heart attack, though thats just theorycrafting on my part. <_<
