Vindicator is a good shotgun replacer, but the Avenger is pretty bad for that.

The Avenger is not very good. Period. I only ever use it because it reminds me of the assault rifles in ME1. The Vindicator, on the other hand, is pretty much amazing. The Vindicator is basically a headshot machine. But unless your doing hardcore of insanity, it doesn't really matter.

I go with Vindicator.

Vindicator, Tempest, Carnifax Hand Cannon and Katana are good weapons for Vanguards. The Vindicator is made for Vanguards (not Adepts though... you need the Geth Pulse Rifle for them).

agree to disagree I used the vindi on my Adept on Insanity. Throw down a singularity to trap a guy and two shot his armor/sheild/barrier off and watch him float away. I don't think the .10 extra shield damage is enough to compensate for the much higher DPS of the vindi

It is when you got harbinger up in your face spamming singularity (but I also take Grunt with me everywhere... so I have squad incendiary ammo turned on).

Avenger is for pumping out a lot of bullets in a mid-range skirmish. Not really something all that attractive to the Vanguard. At point blank range the Tempest SMG outperforms all the assault rifles available to the Vanguard as far as dumping damage is concerned.

I think the new Locust smg will pretty much make AR choices void for all classes except soldier.

With the exception of the occasional Shotgun Sentinel, you were usually choosing between the Viper and the Vindicator before the Locust came into the picture; its addition doesn't tip that balance as much as it devalues advanced weapon training in general.
The Locust does stomp on the Geth Pulse Rifle and Avenger, however, so if you weren't a fan of the Vindicator you shouldn't bother with Assault Rifle Training anymore.

At this point, you might as well just use the shotgun/melee combo
