Hello everyone,

1.  It’s important to identify which product is experiencing the problem.

  a.   Is it the console version or the PC version?  (Edit: Most of this is strictly applicable to the PC version.)

Answer: I've purchased the PC version.

b. Media: physical disk or digital download (and which vendor)

Answer: Physical disk. I bought it from EB Games (www.ebgames.com.au).

2.  System Details

a. Processor / Core count / Core Speed / Main RAM Amount

Answer: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 at 3.16ghz, 4GB Ram.

  b. Display Adapter / VRAM / Driver Version (just saying "latest drivers" doesn't help -- Edited: only ATI / nVIDIA cards are supported)

Answer: I have a Geforce GTX260 with an old driver v190. (something). If you ask me why i haven't downloaded the lastest driver and that's because any driver above the current driver which i'm using (v190. something) causes my windows to display an error message after rebooting saying "win32 dll error"  and it's completely's slows my pc.

c. Sound Adapter / Driver Version

Answer: I'm not 100% sure about my sound adapter, because atm i'm at work. But i rememebr seeing something Realtek HD Audio. I have downloaded the lastest driver for my audio from my motherboard website.

  d. Operating System (& service pack if applicable)

Answer: Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit with Service Pack 2 installed.

  e. Direct X Version

Answer: DirectX10.

3.  Problem Details

  a.  When it comes to problem details, think about the five basic questions: Who? What? When? Where?  Why? Okay, so “Who?” doesn’t really apply here, but the others do.

  b.  What? What is the nature of the problem that you’re seeing?

Answer: Once the game has finished installing, i click on "start" ---> "games" and play "Mass Effect", it loads to the main menu with the audio sound and everything. Now the problem begins when i press "play" or "configue", it displays an error message.I cannot play the game or go into configure. The EA manager doesn't even load up. Everything else is fine, documentation, and other options works fine. I've tried rebooting, load the game from Mass Effect folder, but i cannot play the game.

Anyway since i have Windows Vista, when an error message comes up, Vista gives you an option of allowing Vista to search the internet to solve the problem, which Vista did and came back with solution "Mass Effect Patch v102".

I haven't downloaded the patch, if you ask why not and that's because i'm using dial-up 70mb takes a long time for me. So before i download the patch i want to be 100% sure.

I've tried to play games like "Crysis" which works fine even with my old Nvidia driver.

  c.  When?  When does the problem occur? Every time you engage in a particular action or only after so many hours of play?

Answer: After installing the game. I cannot play the game.

  d.  Where? Where does the problem occur? Is the problem localized to a particular planet or does it occur everywhere?

Answer: Before the game.

  e.  Why? As muchas possible, can you isolate the problem to a specific set of steps?

Answer: I'm not an computer expert, so i don't know what problems it could be. Maybe not installing the lastest Mas Effect patch v1.02 or maybe not having the lastest Nvidia driver.

Find the MassEffect executable in the game's binaries folder. Right click, go to properties and then to the compatibility tab. Make sure to run the game in Windows XP compatible mode as administrator.

I had this for a while on Win7. Eventually, I just un-installed, re-installed, re-patched (very important detail from what I heard) and then started the game. I think patching before even running it (as I did on my second time install) might be key to fixing it as well.

I'm sorry for wasting people's time. I actually download the Mass Effect patch v102 and it worked.

Just wondering how did people play Mass Effect on Vista without the patches? Without the patch i couldn't even get the game to run or configure.

So thank you for posting and helping out.
