It may not affect you personally but I bet you have read this forum enough to realise that we have a major problem with DLC content and region coding.

I say YES to a patch that eliminates region codes and allows users to gain access to the content they have paid for or want to pay for.

What say you?

+1.

There is no warning about it either. You pay $40 to download Awakening just to find it doesn't work cos you have the Australian DA:O disc. Then you email EA about it and get a cookie cutter response that you know will be absolutely no help, reply to that saying it's not good enough then get ignored. Sure a bit of research on the forums would have revealed this, but mixing different region discs and DLC has never presented a problem before so there was no reason to expect there would be again.

Definitely. I just got an American version of Awakening as a birthday present. Inserted the disc and it said I needed to install Origins (which I already have on my PS3 but as a UK version). Did a bit of research and found out that they need to be the same version. Have emailed EA but I'm not sure that they're going to be too helpful.
Is there anyway round this other than downloading Awakening (UK version) on the PSN or buying an American version of Origins?
I've even tried to find somewhere to rent Origins from, but need to find out if it's a region 1 first.

+1 what an incredibly stupid thing to do. It's DLC it's on the internet and meant to be accessed from anywhere, What genius thought to put a region lock on it in the first place.

This isn't an EA/BIOWARE issue. Its Sony who designate that DLC is region coded to the particular PSN/Store.

Going back to the early days when PS3 launched SCEA (the US) had far more content on there store than did the EU and other regions. Many EU gamers myself included bought US games and any free DLC of the US store worked fine but also paid for items of the UK PSN store also worked..

This changed about 2 years ago when the regions realised that there local PSN store was not getting many purchases due to quite a few people using the US PSN store for the stuff they wanted. Its easy enough to get a PSN card from the US and use that for purchases.

Hence the region lock on DLC and stuff bought off the PSN.

This is also the reason why you can't access the US video store from outside NA, the content is only for sale in specific regions at certain times etc etc.

Even if EA/Bioware can't do anything about DLCs being regioned it would've been nice to have some warning in advance that Awakening would have to be the same region as Origins for it to work, especially since this seems to be a known issue/feature of the PSN.

If the content offered on my region's PSN store isn't so fundamentally crappy I wouldn't need to buy my DLC from US store...(Note: I'm from Singapore and South East Asia's PSN store does not even have Return To Ostagar)

I still don't understand it completely, specially if both are discs and not DLC. To me it's really bizarre, still haven't got a solution for this.

It's pretty unlikely that such a patch will happen unfortunately. Like it's been started before, if we want to sell games into different regions, then we need to adhere to those region's laws about making and releasing games and they are not universal in a lot of cases. Not only that, but we have to make sure that those option cannot become accessible by someone with creative hack.Add into that the different disk sizes for each platform and you have a different disk for each version of Dragon Age. The DLC also needs to reflect those specific regions, which means a UK disc will only work with well other UK media for example. Some regions in Europe may be more compatible with others but I cannot recommend mixing them since there may be just enough fundamental differences between the two to make the game unstable.

Out of curiosity, why wasn't a disc released for the PS3 in the UK (or anywhere in Europe as far as I'm aware). It seems really odd.

SCEE rules. DLC can be Download or Disc BUT only one can be used not both at the same time. Bioware chose Download!!

WRONG. GTA4 gets dlc on disk and on PSN this friday in the SCEE region. Therefore, Bioware must either be mistaken or telling lies.

That was the rules scee wouldn't allow a dlc and a disk release at the same time, and they had to choose, I'm sure if they could do both they would as it would have ment a wider audience, which would have ment more money as people like me who can't d/l it would have bought the game

I agree with ewen, I would've thought if Bioware could they would've released it on both a disc and dlc. It seems a really odd restriction to impose though, I can't see what difference it would make to SCEE if it was on both a disc and PSN.
