Back a few years there was a black comedian, who after acting in a rude, stupid, boorish manner would say his catch-phrase - "Is it because I is black?", when reprimanded for his behaviour.



It is not because of his skin colour that most players find Jacob boring, it is because of the dialogue Bioware gave to his chatacter.



Apart from Anderson, one of Bioware's favourite ever characters was also black - Viconia, in fact not only was she black, but she started the game as "neutral evil". I cannot recall the colour of her skin having either an adverse, or positive, effect on her popularity.



Face it, Jacob could be blue, green or red, but he would still be boring.

I think Jacob was unpopular because he had no backstory beyond the bare minimum. He wouldn't have drawn as much Ire if every other squadmate in the game had a fleshed out back story or was returning from ME1. Jacob was the normal guy without the emotional issues everyone else had, and that's why he's boring

Just want to chime in and say I agree with OP totally. I was going to post a new thread saying basically the same thing. I'm not American, both black and white Americans are equally kinda alien to me, and I thought Jacob was as good a character as Kaidan or Carth.



It just seems most of the white male gamers here don't relate to him, 'cos most of them don't have friends like him. He is written and voice-acted to be recognizably African American, unlike, say, Anderson, who is possibly Af-Am in a Colin Powell kinda-way, but doesn't speak like a black guy.



That said, I understand there are some "issues" with the love scene and romance dialogue. My femSheps like Kelly and asari, I haven't been there and am not planning to go there.

I like Jacob actually. I play a maleshep (and am male and white) and he's a good, solid character. One whom my Soldier can easily identify with and can share some drinks with. I can see a drinking scene - like with Chakwas - with him in ME3 easily. The reason I don't tend to take him with me on missions are two-fold.



First of all I prefer the more exotic aliens giving their opinions and commentary during missions. These just seem more colourful.



Second is that especially _because_ Jacob is such a dependable character I trust him more on the Normandy than any other. Unlike the aliens the (mostly Cerberus) crew would trust him, and unlike Miranda I would trust Jacob to do what Shepard would order and not go off on his own. Also he's one of the few of all of them whom I trust to still have the ship after I come back. Not having traded it for some magical space beans.

My problem with Jacob is that if your a man Shep he's boring, and if your a fem Shep the way he talks to you (and you talk to him tbh) makes my skin crawl.



Race is not a factor for me.

How dare you OP! How dare you accuse me a racism for hating Jacob. I may not care for black people very much but the reason why i hate Jacob has nothing to do with that. Stop playing the race card you reverse racist. You minorities are always the same. You see race in everything. White people are never racist, nor is race ever a factor in these kinds of things. It's also completely a coincidence that black lead protagonists are practically non existent in gaming Take your race card mumbo jumbo elsewhere please you *bleep*.

Bioware make a character that is black and intersting so I can show skin colour means nothing, I wouldnt mind shep dating a black woman anyway, besides we already have ash and miranda, you know there are hispanic, african and asian *cough*kasumi*cough* people to, no need to limit it to just caucasian for guys and caucasian and african for women.

Now that I have that out of the way, I think it'd be silly in this day in age for anyone to dislike Jacob solely for being black. How ignorant can you be? Not liking Jacob because he may have lousy dialog and a bland personality is fine.



Frankly, as Maleshep I think Jacob is a homie. As femshep, I generally don't even bother with LI at all since none of the cast are really that appealing to me.

I see a a lot of poster claiming the OP says you're a racist if don't like Jacob. I actually failed to get that from his/her post. Maybe those of you accusing the OP can help me out. It seems in actuallity you're doing the very thing you're accusing the OP of doing.

Calm down, I'm calling anyone openly rascist, it's just a familiarity thing. People are more comfortable with what they know. For aliens this doesn't matter as they are exotic and all the rules go out the window. For humans, I just think Jacob's unpopularity is linked to the fact he's not so culturally familiar to much of the playerbase. It no secret that gamers are overwhelmingly white males aged 16-40.



He wasn't written as a character who happens to be black, like Anderson, but specifically as a black character, and not everyone identifies with that. Consequently people are more critical of him and unforgiving of his faults. No-one can tell me Tali in ME1 was better characterised than Jacob in ME2 with a straight face, but because Tali looked exaggeratedly female with a helmet people could project their fantasies on to, she was really popular. Tali's weak characterization in ME1 was in that way a strength - nothing to put people off or interfere with their sexual fantasies. Jacob is more strongly characterized in a particular direction, (a close comrade who is black), and not everyone 'clicks' with that direction, (possibly because they don't have close comrades who are black). That isn't really rascism. It's no different to me being more open to Miranda because she has the same accent as me.



I wonder if Jacob would be better liked if he was more antagonistic to Shepard?

I would also like to add that I find it quite disturbing, the amount of venom typically spewed forth whenever someone brings up race. The OP isn't judging anybody but merely stating an opinion. At no point is he condemning anyone as a racist and he/she makes this clear yet so many of you have  chosen to ignore this. As well as the request to keep this polite and civil.

I never liked Jacob because he was just too boring compared to everyone else on board the Normandy, who the heck cares what color his skin was! Jacob could have been a lime yellow Asari and he'd have been boring as H***!



So how is it that having friends who are black has anything to do with liking Jacob to begin with? Do you know who my friends are and if so should I be worried about you?



If you want to say you like Jacob, more power to you, but stop making grand assumptions about others and their reasons when you don't know them at all.

Can't speak for all the people, but, seriosly, his skin color is not the reason why I tend to forget about Jacob.

In fact, I liked, really liked him at the very start of the game. According to your theory, I should have disliked him from the start, considering that skin color is the first thing one sees when meeting him. Yet I've lost an interest to this character much later, when more 'cool' squadmates appeared. Overshadowed by Awesome, simple like that.



As for comparing him to Kaidan - yes, I like Kaidan more, but not because of the appearance. lol, for me they're both ugly!=) Both Jacob and Kaidan are kind of boring, but Kaidan's worldviev happens to be very close to mine, while Jacob's...not so much.
