I never liked Jacob because he was just too boring compared to everyone else on board the Normandy, who the heck cares what color his skin was! Jacob could have been a lime yellow Asari and he'd have been boring as H***!

When was he a close comrade?
Was it when he was being stand offish?
When he was insulting the people you recruited?
How about the times he was belligerant and openly disagreed with you?
If you where playing a femSHep the game forced to flirt with him like a cat in heat outside of any of the aforementioned examples, was these when he was being a comrade, or during the cringle worthy romance if you where curious enough to persue it?
Jacob had a lot of big talk about being loyal and stable, but his actions never reflected this, I fail to see how he was suppose to be a likeable comrade.

I think Jacob was unpopular because he had no backstory beyond the bare minimum. He wouldn't have drawn as much Ire if every other squadmate in the game had a fleshed out back story or was returning from ME1. Jacob was the normal guy without the emotional issues everyone else had, and that's why he's boring
True.
And it's rather disappointing, as his backstory has a great potential that could be elaborated upon. His corsair years, for example.

Every moment after that.

If you were a femShep Jacob was unbearable. If you were a male Shep he was frigid and standoffish.
He was really two people - he was one person before the Normandy, a nice and decent fella, and a whole other person once you'd boarded the Normandy. An uptight, boring lump of coal.
I expect my having said this will trigger people telling me this means I am racist toward rocks as coal is black.
Fine. He was a freaking lump of limestone. He was just a boring rock all together, people.

Most players are male. And Kaidan and Jacob are both human and the male leads. Humans are typically competitive and aggressive at times, more so with males. The fact that I don't believe they are actually whining is why I suspect the irrationality of needless rivalry - or emotion, to play a factor. Apparently sharing your past is likened to whining.
Well, I am female, and yet I consider both Kaidan and Jacob boring, at least in comparison to other characters. Though I don't find Kaidan whining (an unpopular opinion, I know)=)

I think that Jacob was designed that way to bring balance to the more abnormal characters in the group. Unfortunately, most gamers are attracted to the more "abnormal" characters (even though many of them are based on overused cliche archetypes, like the eccentric scientist, fight-loving brute, etc.).
With that said, I also do think that popular media has created some unrealistic expectations of how blacks should act. If Jacob spoke more strongly in slang and cracked jokes every five minutes (and thus, acted more like a stereotypical "funny black man), I bet fewer people would have perceived him as "boring." I mean seriously, there's an entire thread on this site discussing what people were expecting Jacob to say (listing numerous comical phrases by famous black individuals and characters).

Worst of all, even with Jacob's barrier and his health bonus, he dies faster than Mordin or Miranda in combat (which i blame on the shotgun AI)
I have slightly better luck when I tell Jacob to use the pistol, but cmon, who wants a squad member using a pistol
anyway, I think if Jacob had better skills and weapons, ie. an Assault Rifle, people would love him more.

In my opinion, Jacob seemed the most well-adjusted and realistic out of Shepard's crew. Unlike every other character who is quick to reveal their deepest and darkest secrets to Shepard after a single conversation or two, Jacob keeps most of his private life to himself, which I think is more realistic.

I don't agree with you on that, cracking jokes would have made Jacob seem even "worse" as a character than he is presently, If I wanted humor I'd go talk to Joker in the cockpit. Humor wasn't going to improve him any, better writing for his character would have been a definite plus!
I do think that Nightwriter (sp?) hit the nail on the head with Jacob though, in that on the Cerberus space station Jacob was open and forthright it seemed, but afterwards on the Normandy he became so "utterly" bland and vanilla it actually made me grit my teeth in pain while listening to him.

He would be worse if he was cracking jokes, because then his character would fit the more stereotypical "comical black man" that is heavily portrayed in the media. I never said that making Jacob crack jokes would be an improvement.

You say that Anderson is possibly African American in a Colin Powell kinda way, but he doesn't speak like a black guy. What exactly are you saying here? That Anderson is not a black guy because he speaks the American English language and pronounces the words in the correct manner as to how they are taught to be spoken in school? I am sure that Anderson's VA Kieth David would appreciate hearing that from you. I would be curious to hear his response to this.viverravid wrote...
It just seems most of the white male gamers here don't relate to him, 'cos most of them don't have friends like him. He is written and voice-acted to be recognizably African American, unlike, say, Anderson, who is possibly Af-Am in a Colin Powell kinda-way, but doesn't speak like a black guy.
Your argument actually has nothing to do with black or white skin color. It has to do with who you think should be portrayed as a black person in video games. Apparently according to you, a black VA can't sound educated and pronounce the words in the language as they were taught, and be a black character.

What I really liked about Jacob at the start, like nightwriter said, is that he was the only who felt like they were being honest and upfront with you. That's really good for a paragon who doesn't like the idea of working with Cerberus, they have Jacob to talk about because he's not sure about Cerberus either. If they made Jacob a little more open, that'd probably better his character. He could be someone to talk to about how crazy this all is.
You remembered my saying that! Bless your heart.
I totally approve of this take on Jacob. It would've been awesome. He really could have been your solid ground in all this, your wingman and buddy. A bit like Alistair was to you if you played a male character.
I shall make a new internet tenant.
Nightwriter's Law: The more Mass Effect fans discuss character handling in Mass Effect 2, the likelier it becomes that gamers will bring up Dragon Age: Origins.

Maybe this is just me not having played DA in forever, but I never really seen Alistair being friends with a male warden, or in a friendship with him. Then again, I scarcely recall some conversation that went like "You've been good to me..." or something. Hmm...I know (or read, at least) that Morrigan says that the female warden feels like a friend or sibling (in this case sister) to her if the approval is high enough. Is that the same for Alistair for a male warden?
Yes.
It says it tons of times, and you can feel the friendship in lots of conversations without it coming out and saying "this is us becoming friends."
I especially like it when his sister says something snippy to you and he shouts, "Hey! You can't talk to him like that, he's my friend!"

You are mistaken, the femSheps have a worse reaction to Jacob then the maleSheps do.
