Wow! Didn't expect this thread to be this popular. Unfortunately some of you seem to completely ignore a lot of what i actually said. I never said the issue was "racism" and people who don't like Jacob are racist. I'm pretty sure I actually   specified that but I could be mistaken. Anyway, my point was i just think the problem is a lot of people just can't relate to Jacob the same way they could if he was another one of the numerous "plain", "normal" white guys in video games. That doesn't mean you're a racist and I was never saying it did so please no need to get so upset and defensive about it. ;)

Not being able to relate to Jacob because he's black is pretty stupid.

Umm, Kaiden wasn't black and a lot of people still didn't like him. The fact is just that Kaiden and Jacob are both boring COMPARED to the other characters. Color has nothing to do with it.

Jacob was more interesting than Kaidan

I can't relate to Jacob because he's clearly inferior to everyone else on your team but talks a lot of smack.

Ah, I don't think so.

Kaidan was more up front, which might contribute to you thinking he was less interesting, as Jacob was more uptight.

But they were both pretty uninteresting. Kaidan was communicative uninteresting. Jacob was uncommunicative uninteresting. That's all.

I don't buy it. I don't care terribly much for Jacob, but Anderson is my favorite character in the whole series, and I'd kill to have him on my team. Part of that is probably just how awesome Keith David is, but overall, aside from some highly quotable material (heavy risk...), Jacob is just a little boring.

I don't like Jacob.

Colour is not an issue. Personalities are.

Kaiden is 2D, as is Jacob.

(black) Anderson is awesome, the (white) counselor is not.

it's all down to personality.

So you think you know how I think. Kaidan was just a whiny little ****. Jacob on the other hand was actually interesting but seemed dull compared to the rest of ME2 amazing cast of characters. Jacob has his back story which is very interesting and is very loyalty to Shepard.LoyaltyLoyalty

I believe the OP was trying to say (white) personalities have a harder time relating to (black) personalities, and that is why Jacob is predominantly disliked.

Crap.

The forums have been around long enough that the same lists of reasons for hating Jacob have been posted repeatedly, probably hundreds of times or close to it.  If people still do not understand the real reasons people do not like the character I doubt they ever will.

I imagine that there are people turned off by a character who is fairly black-in-your-face like Jacob, though as one of my black friends said: "The dude only "acts black" 10% of the time, anyway."

The real problem is that (1) Jacob is a fairly stable individual among a crowd of crazy, (2) he has lousy combat skills, and (3) his romance isn't particularly endearing.

All that said I like Jacob better than most ME2 teammates.

I don't like Jacob, mainly because I'm a femshep and after literally 2 whole conversations with him he starts bringing up the fraternization rules?!

His "romance", if you can even call it that, seemed very shallow. It was almost just more about sex and having the hots for each other than an actual personal connection.
But I know that if you play as a maleshep he seems a little better, I just wish I could have had a friendship with him as a femshep. Because trust me, you can not. I tried multiple times and all he ever brings up is romance, so I don't want to turn him down and risk him being pissed at me.

His character was just so easily forgotten to me.
And it's not about race, at least not to me.
I absolutely adore Captain Anderson, he's one of my favorite characters.
He makes me think of a father figure in a way, like if Shepard doesn't have a family I always get that impression.
Also they should have made Jacob look like the guy from the Old Spice commerical "The man your man could smell like."
He's hot. <3

Psychological associations more than anything else. Every time I hear Carth's voice I automatically tune it out because I'm expecting him to whine about not trusting me.

Yeah, but when is he like EVER black-in-your-face? Even 10% of the time?

I mean, black-in-your-face is like, Chris Rock.

Or Eminem.

The idea that someone can act black makes me laugh, and also sad.

There is nothing "normal" about having European ancestory. I can relate to anyone if I wished.  I am extremely offended by your insistence that I and others are racist. Yes, the way you worded it would clearly indicate nothing but racism whether you wished it or not. Calling someone racist is the worst thing you can call someone. By  the way, I am not "White" and I jacob is not exactly my favorite character. Bioware should have given us the Jacob that fought in the Citadel, not Cerberus Jacob. Furthermore, I disliked Kaiden and had him killed six times. Am I racist against whatever Kaiden is too? And we do have the right to be upset you imbecile!

He didn't say being white IRL was normal. He illustrated that white protagonists are normal/predominent in videogame culture (at least in western games)

Choosing to relate to someone doesn't give you the power to do so. I can't relate to someone who had divorced parents because mine never did nor could I to a parapalegic because I have never lost the use of my legs.

Never thought that a different skin color can be that much a barrier to relating to someone. It's like not being able to relate to a redhead because you are brunette, lol. Cosmetical difference, nothing more.

Oh, and by that logic, I should not be able to relate to ANY videogame character (except, perhaps, some unnamed NPCs) because I've never fired a gun, don't know a thing about fighting, never been in mortal danger (at least, not that I know of=) and never killed a sentient creature.

Wonderful!

Now all we need is for someone to superimpose Jacob's head onto that guy and play the clip every time the subject of Jacob is brought up.

For lulz.

Jacob is the least popular because he just isn't that interesting. I'd take Kal'Reegar as a LI and/or replacement squad member over Jacob any day.

I want Kal'Reegar in ME3 >:(
