Jacob is a relatively basic character with nothing incredibly interesting about him...
That's the problem. He's basic. Too basic. He's a good, honest soldier. That's good. But there's nothing beyond that.
As a character, he's not even half-empty, he's 90% empty. The poor guy doesn't get fleshed out in ME2. He's a smooth pebble lost among multifaceted gems. Sure, it's smooth, shiny, and nice, but it's not mesmerizing like the many facets on the gems. I hope BioWare will expand his personality—upgrade it, if you will—for Mass Effect 3.

Kaidan was just a whiny little ****.
Psychological associations more than anything else. Every time I hear Carth's voice I automatically tune it out because I'm expecting him to whine about not trusting me.
Pfft. Kaidan wasn't whiny, you're just prejudiced against him cuz of Carth.
It's like not trusting Mufasa because Darth Vader was evil. Unfair.

AWESOME BLACK VIDEO GAME PROTAGONISTS
Sergeant Major Avery J. Johnson - Halo series
Doctor Eli Vance - Half Life series
Sazh Katzroy - Final Fantasy XIII
Augustus "Cole Train" Cole - Gears of War
Louis - Left 4 Dead
Jade - Beyond Good & Evil BONUS! She's the main character AND she's a she.
I could go on but the point has been made. Far more interesting and likable video game characters exist and also happen to be black (or at least, not white).
Sorry, OP. There's no elephant in the room.

Jacob is generally not liked because when put side by side with the other squad members he comes across as the good guy without a darker, more interesting side. All the other characters have some moral or ethical issue, or are hired guns, or are alien Justicars, or genetically modified. Jacob is just a good guy trying to do good. So naturally he is the most boring.
Bust saying it's because of racial differences, well sorry, but that makes what you said a racist comment. Especially if considering how no-one can sneeze in a direction these days without someone claiming some form of racism.

I think maybe Bioware forgot to write us new lines of dialogue for this conversation. Or they got cut due to time constraints. Now we're cycling through the old stuff over and over.
I shall now begin a remix of tag phrase loop lines to say in place of new material...
I'm doing some calibrations.

Yeah you're right. It's bloody frustrating though when people insert racial based issues where there are not any though.

It's true.
No one likes it when someone suggests the reason they don't like someone is because they're prejudiced.

I would add Resident Evil 5's Sheva Alomar and Josh Stone to this list.

The point is made is it? I'd be pretty impressed if you could come up with a list of non sterreotypical, non optional main characters. Not supporting characters. I think that was the point. Jade was desinged to be ethnically ambiguiuous by the way.

I agree, the only one who I think doesn't follow a stereotypical persona would be Eli Vance.

I like the part where he shoots his own dad. That was a Jacob is being badass moment. For the rest of the game, not so much.
When did he shoot his dad? In all my playthroughs, he said he wasn't worth shooting.

Jacob and jack aren't popular because their powers aren't that good. Simple as that. If bioware had given him a rifle I would use him more. And instead of pull give push or warp. He would be a bad ass then. Hopefully they'll change it for mass effect 3.
Dude, Pull is great, evolve it into Pull Field and your set, you don't even have to put points in throw because my boy Jacob starts right off with Pull, sooooo gooood!

Jack isn't popular? Says who? I admit that normally that kind of female character would irriitate me but somehow I found myself really liking Jack.

The problem with Jacob is the writing. Seems like Bioware was almost scared of going anywhere with him because of possible blow back involving stereotypes. I mean, sh!t, it's the future. After humanity discovered sapient life off of Earth "race"/religion ect. became irrelevant. Humans are Humans. Should've taken a "riskier" approach to Jake instead of taking the safe route. This is coming from a 1/2 black Brazilian.
Didn't seem to stop them from having Jacob shout things like "Gravity is one mean Mutha".

Firstly Jack is quite popular (and the people who don't like her don't like her for her personality)
Secondly people hate Jacob for his crappy romance and boring personality.

I imagine that there are people turned off by a character who is fairly black-in-your-face like Jacob, though as one of my black friends said: "The dude only "acts black" 10% of the time, anyway."
The real problem is that (1) Jacob is a fairly stable individual among a crowd of crazy, (2) he has lousy combat skills, and (3) his romance isn't particularly endearing.
All that said I like Jacob better than most ME2 teammates.
Yeah, but when is he like EVER black-in-your-face? Even 10% of the time?
I mean, black-in-your-face is like, Chris Rock.
Or Eminem.
Heh. Depends on what you mean. I'd say he brings out his "black pro-athlete" swagger out a few times.

The number of pages in Jack's support thread happen to disagree.
