I felt like Jacob was two different people before and after the Lazarus Station portion of the game.
While you were on the Cerberus base he was decent, forthcoming, he showed you respect and leveled with you when really no one else did. He was friendly, treated you like a person. I started to like him immediately.
But when I got him on the Normandy it was like he became this different person. He became withdrawn, taciturn, standoffish, curt and stiff. Difficult to talk to.
I began to suspect split personality or Reaper indoctrination. Or that perhaps he was becoming a werewolf and the
hormones were kicking in.
Eventually I lost interest.
I agree with this. Miranda has the exact opposite transformation - she begins as rude and mistrusting, but once on the Normandy after a single mission she politely answers any questions Shepard has. Ask Jacob about anything and he just says "I don't want to talk about it." Even Jack lets the barrier down after a while, Jacob never does.

I was actually surprised. Miranda was so cold on the Lazarus Station, then when you get to the Normandy and you say "Tell me about you, Miranda" she abruptly changes.
There's a light lilt to her voice, she sort of goes, "Oh, I guess that's fair" and launches right into it.

Well on Lazarus station Miranda didn't know whether or not Shepard will continue to be a companion beyond Freedom's Progress at all. Since Shepard decided to stick around and command the Normandy, he effectively "earned" Miranda's trust.Nightwriter wrote...

Then again he did say he was always honest about how he felt.
Atleast the council werent as bad as the ME1 character, that needed a renegade option, she just saw the ****ing collectors and me killing them, obviously its not cerberus you stupid *****. ME1 Charaters in this game seem to be there for the entire purpose of pissing me off.
I'd appreciate if he speaks his mind on issues that warrants a debate, not in the most inapporiate of situitions, saying the most insensitive things. I'm not saying I'd stop him for saying it, but the fact that he said those things just made him come across as a jerk.
Tali, the way he introduced EDI, he should have used subtelty.

The fact that Jacob is black means nothing. The reason he is not particularly talked about is not because he is unpopular, or that his race makes ANY difference at all. Jacobs problem is that he is not interesting enough. He doesn't do anything wrong and never acts out of character. now while this may be good it also makes him somewhat uninteresting. If he suddenly decided to shoot, lets say a c-sec officer, it would be bad and out of character, but it would be a cause for him to be talked about. And yes if he was white he would be equally uninteresting because he does nothing interesting. Kaiden at least does and says several things that are interesting whereas Jacob has almost none. Racism doesn't factor into it at all.Madi wrote...
The big elephant in the room here that no one wants to talk about is the fact that Jacob is black. Now before you start getting ultra defensive and start accusing me of reverse racism I’d like to point out that I’m biracial and have no racial biases of any kind. Secondly I’m not saying the reason that Jacob is such a massively unpopular is because the people who don’t like Jacob are inherently racist. However that doesn’t mean that the fact that Jacob is black isn’t a factor. In fact I would say it’s a significant factor.
I think it’s probably largely subconscious. Jacob is a relatively basic character with nothing incredibly interesting about him although still a much more solid, well rounded character than you’ll find in most games. The issue is I think that most white gamers just find it difficult to relate to black characters. I think that’s one of the main reasons why black characters are so rare in video games and actual black protagonists are nearly nonexistent in video games.Especially non- stereotypical characters (i.e. C.J. from GTA) Can you honestly tell me that if Jacob was a suave white guy he’d be this unpopular? Just look at Kaden who Jacob is commonly compared to. Most people seem to agree that he isn’t much more if at all more interesting a character than Jacob yet he’s still infinitely more popular than Jacob. Once again that doesn’t mean that you’re a racist but I just think it clearly shows that race plays a factor in a lot of things, whether subconscious or otherwise. Although I think the fact that he bears a strong resemblance to Kanye West didn’t really help either. I don’t really get why his look was changed so dramatically from Mass Effect Galaxy. It’s like he’s a completely different person.

Seriously, what self-respecting person would ask someone you know for what 30min "do you trust me" as if he/she were your BFF? I took an immediate disliking to him at that point. And it just went all the way downhill from there.

It was sort of abrupt, though. Even when you first board the ship after Freedom's Progress, Miranda suggests recruiting Mordin first and it's basically the right call. Even still you can choose to snarkily remind her that she's not in command of the mission so she can shut it. Then you go to her office and any hostility between her and Shepard is immediately gone and they have a nice civil chat.

For my opinion Racism has nothing to with it. I disliked Kaiden just as much as Jacob, they were both boring and dull. In all my ME1 games I let Kaiden die for just that reason. As far as the topic of Racism, all races have that issue, and all races from my study of history have suffered from that and slavery. My family for instance, I'm 2nd generation from Ireland that have lived in the USA.
My grandparents came from Ireland and were treated like 2nd class citizens when they were first here. Considering my Grandfather was a police officer in Ireland it was a drastic change to the respect he was used to getting in his homeland. Going even further back in my races history the Celts were used on slave ships by the British, and I won't go into details but many atrocities happened to my people in those days.
Now in modern times I have friends from England and other countries and all anger from days past has been forgoten from what I've seen. But in the end it comes down to this all races throughout history have experienced en-slaving others and being slaves themeselves. The astonishing thing is that over the thousands of years that man has been on earth we still have not learned from our errors and we fail and repeat history over and over.
In the end I get tired of people whether African american or otherwise using the race card whenever another persons opinion on a topic differs from theirs. It is not Logical, judgmental, assumming, and inheriently wrong, that lack of respect for an individuals personal opinion is what starts racism to begin with.

White people were enslaving white people long before we ever started enslaving black people.
Looking at Britain's past can be so depressing sometimes. Looking at its weather can be depressing all the time.

Being biracial doesn't mean you can't be racist unless you're one of those crackpots who think only whites can be racist, which is what you're implying by using the term "reverse racism."Madi wrote...

I would say it isn't. I would say that the fact that he's an annoying uninteresting little prat is the significant factor as to why everyone doesn't like him. THE PRIIIIZEE comes to mind(it was the one romance I didnt do, but I watched the youtube of it - lulzy).Secondly I’m not saying the reason that Jacob is such a massively unpopular is because the people who don’t like Jacob are inherently racist. However that doesn’t mean that the fact that Jacob is black isn’t a factor. In fact I would say it’s a significant factor.
So you yourself admit he's uninteresting but you STILL think most people don't like him(at least partly) because he's black? Sounds like your assuming most non-black people have racial biases towards blacks, and that sounds... racist!I think it’s probably largely subconscious. Jacob is a relatively basic character with nothing incredibly interesting about him although still a much more solid, well rounded character than you’ll find in most games.
Of course they do. Why do you think the Duke basketball team(it's an american team, look it up) fans are so fanatical compared to other teams' fans? It's because the players look just like they do. It doesn't mean they're racist, it means they're human. The issue is I think that most white gamers just find it difficult to relate to black characters. I think that’s one of the main reasons why black characters are so rare in video games and actual black protagonists are nearly nonexistent in video games.Especially non- stereotypical characters (i.e. C.J. from GTA)
I'll be honest, when I'm playing a video game I want the protagonist to look like I do. I didn't purchase GTA 4 or San Andreas for exactly that reason(that, and I was getting outraced by volkswagons while in a sports car, they RUINED the controls). It helps me identify with the character, it's also why Bioware letting you make your own Shepard/Grey Warden is PURE GOLD.
Does it mean I hate black people? Of course not, don't be stupid. It means I want to play as someone that reminds me of, well, me.
Of course not. Because first off, Jacob isn't suave. If he was suave he'd be a lot more popular and a lot less hated. Kaiden is likely more popular because he isn't AS fugly(personally I still think he's ugly, but I'm a guy and not gay so what do I know?) as Jacob. Can you honestly tell me that if Jacob was a suave white guy he’d be this unpopular? Just look at Kaden who Jacob is commonly compared to. Most people seem to agree that he isn’t much more if at all more interesting a character than Jacob yet he’s still infinitely more popular than Jacob.
Once again that doesn’t mean that you’re a racist but I just think it clearly shows that race plays a factor in a lot of things, whether subconscious or otherwise.
I think Kanye is better looking, actually.Although I think the fact that he bears a strong resemblance to Kanye West didn’t really help either.
That confused me too. When I saw Jacob I was all "lol wut, weren't you bald?" Because to be honest that's the only difference. He's ugly in both games, in my personal opinion.I don’t really get why his look was changed so dramatically from Mass Effect Galaxy. It’s like he’s a completely different person.

and the Vikings yep, but as I said every race has suffered racism. So not only is it a way we shouldn't spend our lives judging people by, most people know not to and are against racism so why would these same people (myself included) turn around and judge a game character by race. Because they don't, they judge Jacob by his lack of interesting character motives and methods.

True and black people were enslaving black people before white people did. Yet we raely comment on what each group dose to its own, we just focus on what they do to eachother, even if its the same damn thing.Nightwriter wrote...

At some point in history ALL races have suffered from another races cruelty. yes DarkShadow, even the British.
This made me chuckle.
White people were enslaving white people long before we ever started enslaving black people.
Looking at Britain's past can be so depressing sometimes. Looking at its weather can be depressing all the time.
Also agree with the weather.

I'm actually quite annoyed that the OP decided that because Jacob is unpopular, it must be because of some kind of racist undercurrent, rather than the character's lack of... well character.
Yep he is just plain boring.
