I find it interesting how people say Kaidan was whiny. Jacob is more whiny than Kaidan ever was. Plus, he is an idiot.

'Cause when he talks we all have bad Carth flashbacks.

I tend to just ignore Jacob. And then come up with different ways to get him killed during the suicide mission. B)

Jacob's a nice guy, but he's less flashy than the other squad mates and he does tend to rub people the wrong way on his reactions to Shepard's actions (recruitment, etc)

As was mentioned before Jacob really only had one openly negative reaction to a new recruit which was Thane because he's an Assassin. Some people try to say he had an attitude with Tali but that's completely unfounded.

I have heard from other threads that he has a personal issue with mercs and assassins (and therefore Thane) in particular because of the cell phone game he was in where he saved the citadel.  I haven't played it so I can't say for certain but he explains it some when you bring him to Ish after getting packages for him on Omega.

I think it's just a normal aversion that soldiers who serve usually don't take well to people who kill for whoever can pay them. When Jacob stated that a mercenary has no more loyalty than to his next paycheck, that reflects he values loyalty and the right reasons for fighting.

Yeah, I did notice a few times he was insubordinate.

When I took Jacob and Miranda to Archangel's recruitment mission and instructed Jacob to stay and protect Garrus, Jacob objects; he doesn't want to stay. It surprised me, I didn't expect it.

However if you tell Miranda to stay and protect Garrus she does not object at all, but follows your orders. I always wondered why this was.

Probably because you told the guy with a shotgun to sit in the snipers nest, just an idea.

Well he has a heavy pistol too you know. ;)

Ah yes... Heavy pistols...

Heavy risk saying they suck...

But the priiiize... (aka... The truth...)

People were already entering the base by then, though. There was close quarter fighting going on, it wasn't all long distance work. For that matter Miranda doesn't have weapons suited for a sniper nest either, but she didn't object.

So it leads me to think he really just wanted to come with you and not stay behind with Garrus.

Yeah, it's possible he just didn't want to split up the team.

Or maybe he just didn't want to be separated from Miranda. Or maybe it was my femShep.

Or maybe even my male Shep, Jacob's one of those guys who's so buff it makes me suspicious of his total heterosexuality... Sheploo's pretty sexy... and it would explain that thing with Thane... maybe it was just romantic tension...

... Wow, it's late, isn't it? I'm up way too late.

The big elephant in the room here that no one wants to talk about is the fact that Jacob is black. Now before you start getting ultra defensive and start accusing me of reverse racism I’d like to point out that I’m biracial and have no racial biases of any kind.  Secondly I’m not saying the reason that Jacob  is such a  massively unpopular is because the people who don’t like Jacob are inherently racist. However that doesn’t mean that the fact that Jacob is black isn’t a factor. In fact I would say it’s a significant factor.

I think it’s probably largely subconscious. Jacob is a relatively basic character with nothing incredibly interesting about him although still a much more solid, well rounded character than you’ll find in most games. The issue is I think that most white gamers just find it difficult to relate to black characters. I think that’s one of the main reasons why black characters are so rare in video games and actual black protagonists are nearly nonexistent in video games.Especially non- stereotypical characters (i.e. C.J. from GTA)  Can you honestly tell me that if Jacob was a suave white guy he’d be this unpopular? Just look at Kaden who Jacob is commonly compared to.  Most people seem to agree that he isn’t much more if at all more interesting a character than Jacob yet he’s still infinitely more popular than Jacob. Once again that doesn’t mean that you’re a racist but I just think it clearly shows that race plays a factor in a lot of things, whether subconscious or otherwise. Although I think the fact that he bears a strong resemblance to Kanye West didn’t really help either. I don’t really get why his look was changed so dramatically from Mass Effect Galaxy. It’s like he’s a completely different person.

http://masseffect.bi.../market/galaxy/

My main Shepard is black and I think he looks better than the default Shep ;). And in real-life I'm just some guy from Europe, so I'm not black in RL.

I like Jacob but not so much as the other companions, here's why:

1) He welcomes most team members in the meeting room and sometimes things get tense. I still don't understand why he does that. Kelly should be welcoming everyone, not Jacob. It's rather annoying.

2) His loyalty mission was quite short and not what I expected of it. I thought his dad would come up with a reason why he had done all that but he just admitted to his crimes. The idea of a group of people who have to survive on a planet for 10 years is very interesting but it was badly executed in this mission imo.

3) He acts a bit stupid. He doesn't want to stay behind with Garrus, he volunteers to do the infiltration part in the suicide mission (while he's not even a technician)...

4) I've played Mass Effect Galaxy and it feels like he's a different person in ME2. Dunno why. He was just way cooler in ME: Galaxy imo.

Me too! Maybe part of it was the way Shepard stands when they talk... something not quite right with the way he leans back against that table. Not sure what it is. Jacob standing there in liquid latex pants doesn't help.

When MShepard complimented Jacob on his body I went woah...And yea, I always thought how Shepard stands was weird. Can't he just stand straight to talk to his buddy? jeez. As for latext pants, that's why the loyalty outfit is so awesome in comparison

Wait wait now, when does maleShep make that comment? You must tell me.

And I always do Jacob's mission first. Part of it is I don't care about it as much and want to get it out of the way, but the other part is that I want to get his alternate outfit as quickly as possible so it hides the skin tightness and latex sculpted ass and I don't have to keep staring at it.

I don't remember exactly. It's probably not the first conversation. Shepard basically says "for all you've been through Jacob, you don't exactly have a bad body." And there's another time where Jacob talks to MShepard about "upgrades" from the Lazarus Projet. Add that with the "I just feel like talking for a bit," and the way MShepard stands, and you've got a potentially awkward scenario for a heterosexual male player (or any who doesn't like Jacob in that way, basically [which is basically most women]).

Oh man. I vaguely - vaguely - recall a line like that. But it didn't quite mention Jacob's body, I don't think. The wisp of the memory that's whispering to me from my subconscious is telling me Shepard said something like "you do pretty well for yourself" or "you're no worse for wear", "you keep in shape"  - things like that.

"You keep in shape" is literally saying he has a nice body. Shepard didn't have to say it, but he did. Though I admit my memory was hazy, and the way you put it, maybe I misinterpreted. Then again, I already knew this because obviously MShep is not flirting with Jacob, the lines were just kind of ambiguous or borderline.

Crap, Collider. Now I'm going to have to go back and explore all the options since I don't know which one triggered it and find out for sure. Oh well...

Oh, also:

Wow. I had never considered that Kelly should be the Normandy greeter, why had that never crossed my mind? That would've been perfect. Makes perfect sense.

I spent the whole quest sure there would be an explanation for it all. They hammed it up as being so bad on the way there I felt wary of a surprise, a reversal, an explanation I didn't see coming. When I found out it was exactly as bad as it seemed I was quite floored - I hadn't expected it.

I suppose there are other gamers who would derive absolute glee from this; anything that breaks the pattern and does not come as expected, even if it's morbid, is to be held aloft like an idol and praised. Me, I was just... disturbed.

But I think what I disliked most about the quest was that Jacob wanted your help but not your emotional presence or input. He wanted you to butt out, he could handle himself and his feelings, he didn't need you.

I agree with this actually. She gets along with people and quite friendly. Still too much of a fortune cookie, but would have worked as the greeter. I suppose they wanted Jacob to have more of a role than just some dude who kind of helps you off the Cerberus research station. It kind of makes sense that Jacob is the greeter (although Kelly would be better) because he's the kind of guy who admits that Cerberus has it's own problems and probably wants to make up for that.

But I think what I disliked most about the quest was that Jacob wanted your help but not your emotional presence or input. He wanted you to butt out, he could handle himself and his feelings, he didn't need you.

I kind of liked his loyalty mission because the setting was fantastic and the music was good as well. It also felt very compact, but in a good way.

The only problem is that Jacob is kind of just there and not really doing anything. You get great insights into the characters from pretty much every other loyalty mission, but with Jacob's all you get really is...he thinks what happened here is bad. Just like any decent person would. That doesn't really show anything about Jacob other than he's a decent person, which we already knew.

And the conversation after the loyalty mission was disappointing. Tali and Liara both had something to say about losing one of their parents, yet all Jacob says is "I've got it covered." He can talk about his father without being like depressed or too affected by it. If you remember we had a similar discussion on this topic where Jacob would talk about what he saw with his father, say it was absolutely despicable but then go on to comparing it with some of the crazy **** he's seen as a corsair, and then starts recounting how this one mission was totally different than he imagined it to be. But really, woulda, coulda, shoulda.

I hear this a lot! I've never played Galaxy. What was so cool about Galaxy Jacob? I can't imagine.

You control Jacob and there's no mention of the prize, I would guess.

Not at that point, though. When you leave someone behind, there's no one in the base and they all have to go down the turkey shoot path. A shotgun is distinctly short range: an SMG has a good deal more reach and ability to keep targets hiding behind cover at a distance, as well as working close as well. In the context of defending a sniper nest, the SMG's much better: you wouldn't have to wait until the enemy was already in the base for it to be useful.

Lol, never thought I'd find myself defending Jacob, but if there's any thing he's not, it's whiner. If anything, he is not whiny enough - doesn't need Shepard's help, support or advice at all, has no problems to speak about, emotionally distant and unapproachable.
