Of course they do. Why do you think the Duke basketball team(it's an american team, look it up) fans are so fanatical compared to other teams' fans? It's because the players look just like they do. It doesn't mean they're racist, it means they're human.

I'll be honest, when I'm playing a video game I want the protagonist to look like I do. I didn't purchase GTA 4 or San Andreas for exactly that reason(that, and I was getting outraced by volkswagons while in a sports car, they RUINED the controls). It helps me identify with the character, it's also why Bioware letting you make your own Shepard/Grey Warden is PURE GOLD.

Yeah I like that, well its not what I look like but I usually try to get the same look in every game because i like it.
I do think however people can be racist sub conciously, not racism as in hating people just in personal preference e.g given the choice in making my character I dont play as a non white character, I prefer making shep/gray warden pale, however I have no problem playing non white character e.g CJ in GTA SA.
I do think not playing SA because you dont look like you is extreme though, you missed a fun game, its the rap/gangster **** that annoys me.

True and black people were enslaving black people before white people did. Yet we raely comment on what each group dose to its own, we just focus on what they do to eachother, even if its the same damn thing.
Also agree with the weather.

Never knew that about the black people. Guess I was so focused on what white people did to black people I never considered it. But I suppose they probably would have, if they're anything at all like other cultures.

I think it’s probably largely subconscious. Jacob is a relatively basic character with nothing incredibly interesting about him

Thats exactly it: Jacob is just...well kinda boring compared to most of the other characters. Mordin is hilarious, Tali is cute, Jack is insane, Samara is intriguing and wise, but Jacob is just a normal guy compared to them.

And is personal mission is a bit too far fetched and...strange for me, to really connect to him. It hasn't that big conflict like for example Mordin's mission, where Mordin really has to think about his past. Jacob is just like "Yeah, my father is a douche, I don't care about him."

I hate to break this to you(not really), but wanting to play a character that looks like you isn't racist.  Not even subconsciously.  It's called personal preference and it's perfectly normal.

I never said I didn't PLAY it.  Either way I wouldn't consider it extreme, just my own choice.

They are human, humans have a tendancy to screw each other over, any atrocity we commited has been done before and somewhere else.

I think Jacob was the only one you couldn't really talk to about his loyalty mission afterward. He simply didn't want to talk about it. It was a closed book and he wasn't letting you in to read it.

Everyone else, they discussed it, reflected on it, and you sort of got the feeling they were sharing that experience with you. Everything that endears a character to  you, you felt in those conversations - you felt their doubt, their fear or relief or turmoil.

But no, not Jacob. As usual he made you feel quite unwelcome.

 I like how you said it, it was simple, blunt and pretty much spot on.

I know its not realy racist, but still having a personal preference seems racist, because you are thinking differently based on skin colour, well not thinking differently but you shouldnt realy care you should just pick something.

He does open up even to a male Shepard if you come back a couple of times. I'm not sure what triggers it, but there is more dialogue after he goes into his "I'm not big on forcing these talks" loop.

Anyway, to the OP - I'm really sorry if it offends you that I don't think this character is terribly interesting, but accusing me (and others) of racism isn't going to change my mind. Jacob is boring. And if you look around these forums, 90% of the jokes at Jacob's expense are either about his poorly written romance dialogue ("the priize") or about the fact that he looks like Kanye West. And no, not because all blacks look alike to us evil white devils, but because Jacob looks like Kanye West.

As for Kaidan Alenko, guess what, I thought he was even more boring than Jacob. Now that I think about it, Jacob is, in fact, a marginally more interesting character than Kaidan. Why is Kaidan more popular? Maybe it's the writing in his romance subplot. Maybe it's the fact that Jacob's facial animations are done terribly. I don't know, and I don't care, frankly.

That said, the other 10% of the Jacob jokes here do tend to be racist ("if he wants a prize, he can have KFC haw haw, me so funny"), and I do think that's pretty f**king pathetic. But stupid people are everywhere, that's just how it goes. Accusing the ME community of being a bunch of racist crackas who just don't like Jacob because he's black doesn't make you look particularly smart either, fwiw.

Oh I think Jacob is far from being the least popular character. Many are neutral when he is considered and many like him. The thing is that his romance is funny for some and annoying for the others, thats why the priiiize thing is going around.

I made a thread and a poll about Jacob, you can look at the result and comments (though I don't know HOW representative it is)

EDIT: grammar AND spelling fail

The fact is, Jacob is like a piece of wood - flat, wheras most of the other characters are like onions-

Multi-layerd.

Calling us racist is heavy risk...

Well you don't need to be unpopular, you just need to be less popular than the others. He's probably not the most hated. That title will probably go to Zaeed, Jack or Miranda. These characters were meant to be controversial, and the very fact that many hate them would suggest they are successful on that purpose.

Now Jacob is another story. If people don't like them or are even indifferent, then he would've failed. It's all relative, both to how he was supposed to function in the story AND relative to the other characters.

The big elephant in the room here that no one wants to talk about is the fact that Jacob is black. Now before you start getting ultra defensive and start accusing me of reverse racism I’d like to point out that I’m biracial and have no racial biases of any kind.  Secondly I’m not saying the reason that Jacob  is such a  massively unpopular is because the people who don’t like Jacob are inherently racist. However that doesn’t mean that the fact that Jacob is black isn’t a factor. In fact I would say it’s a significant factor.

Now you sound like Cerberus.

It's not an issue. That's the end of it.

I think that's enough posting. I appreciate your interest, Commander. And I appreciate you dropping it, too.

I do go back and talk to him, as much as I can, male or female Shep.

You have to admit, it's still not a lot, and the conclusion of all of it is still pretty much "case closed, I don't want to talk about it anymore".

Which is perfectly fine.

... If you don't care about making an interesting character.

I didn't like Jacob but I freaking love talking about Jacob's ridiculous lines and quoting them all over the place.

Thanks for the comedy, Jacob. I love you for that if nothing else.

It's because he's a big yes man.

"Whatever you say, Commander." *salutes*

"The decision is yours, Commander." *Salutes*

"I'll be in your cabin and on my knee's in five minutes, commander." *salutes*

Wait, what was that last one? o..o

Lets see, we have...

a master assassin, a turian veteran that helped kill saren, a suicidal (and sexy), crazy biotic that wears nothing from the waist up but tats, a pure bred krogan battering ram, the perfect woman with awesome combat powers, a salarian mastermind and stg veteran, the most badass merc you can find, tali... , the best thief with an awesome skill, an asari justicar or her daughter that kills you while... , a guy that has no exceptional skills, bad weapon combo and is pretty normal.

hmm, who is the most interesting? hint: it´s not the last one.
