It's pretty obvious that race has something to do with his lack of popularity. The same people singing the praises of the worthless Kaidan complain about Jacob even though they are pretty much the exact same character, except Jacob is better in combat.

I don't know why, but Kaidan has always sort of given me the creeps.  I'm sorry...he just does.

I don't care what people say. Unless I'm playing a vanguard, Jacob is a great squadmate to have. Pull is a kick ass ability and so is his squad incendiary. Much rather have him than Grunt. Tanks are overrated even on insanity. The only crappy thing is his bonus power kinda makes him weaker since he turns his barrier on automatically, it keeps me from using his pull, sometimes when I need it. I just do his loyalty last before the Reaper IFF>

Oh yeah. I Forgot about his incendiary ammo which is very usefull. Squad ammo of course.

Kaidan and Jacob are both boring. Jack's character design is fantastic, unfortunately, her character seems too common among the "badass" women that people are trying to make. I dunno, but yeah those are the 3 squadmates I do not enjoy using.

The aversion I have for the Jacob character is the result of the manner in which either the authors or the voice actress or voice director designed the interaction between Femshep and Jacob where she says "I'm more interested in talking for a bit". When I first saw this I was somewhat taken aback sensing that my character was being forced into a romantic entanglement without my consent. Femshep interacts with no other character in this manner and for me the resulting reaction was resentment and subsequent aversion to the Jacob character. Up until that point in the game I percieved Jacob as any other character, neutral and my reaction would have been the same had this occurred with anyone. I think the option of romancing any character in the game ought to be left up to the player and being led or forced into something presumably optional without consent is inappropriate in my opinion. My Femshep has been loyal to Liara since ME1 and having her come off in a seductive manner toward any other character seems an attempt to alter the perception I have of the character I created and control throughout the game. So my take on the Jacob thing is that if there's any racism involved it's on the part of the Devs. Had the seductive demeanor of Femshep been eliminated I don't think this thread would exist.

He isn't "universally" disliked. He's just one of the less popular characters. I'd like to see Bioware cut Tali just to spite the ever creepy Tali fan hoard.

I have no idea who William Shatner and i don't see what he has to do with anything. What do you find so objectionable about the picture exactly?

I hope not. Which is it anyway? People universally say he's boring. That's easily rectified by better writing and story.
There is no reason for him being universally disliked. Unless calling him boring is the politically correct way of saying I hate his black ass.

So forget the fans that do like his character right? Most of the people that I know that play Mass Effect dont even know what a Bioware message board is. All my boys like Jacob...the opinions of some players on a message board does not speak for the millions of players that dont interact online. I have 2 female friends who are gamers, and both picked up Mass Effect 2 when they found out that Jacob was voiced by Adam Lazzare White of Young and the Restless fame...Thats the only reason they bought it and now Mass Effect has them hooked.
The thing that makes me like Jacob the most, is that he feels the most realistic out of the whole crew. The man is not a whiner ,he speaks his mind and you actually have to think about what you say to him to get him to open up.Most people in the real world dont give you their whole history as soon as you meet them...you have to get to know them. Bioware has spoiled people by making their characters run their mouths at the drop of a hat. Jacob does not do that.
I dont know what Bioware has in store for Jacob or any of the crew for that matter,but he lived in my playthroughs so I hope to have him on my squad next game whether a bunch of message board folks hate him or not.

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but in ME1 I would have loved to be able to romance Tali. However the talimancers here turned me off to her. I just stick with either Ash, Miranda or Jack.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine about Jacob. I had just started and my friend had beaten the game. He said he didn't like Jacob at all and I said I actually liked him. However, after playing through the game and meeting the rest of the team Jacob moved his way to the back of the list. 

Since then I have come to this revalation, he was an intresting character at the beginning because he filled you in on everything and gave you a lot of intresting information about what was going on at the time but after that he really didn't give you anything. Going to see Jacob was almost as bad as Garrus always making those damn calibrations. Jacob was the classic character used to bring people up to speed and once they are up to speed, the character becomes useless. Same thing goes for Kaiden, although Bioware gave him a slightly better personality. At least he had a decent backstory.

The Talihaters are far more annoying
