1. Jacob isn't my least like character. Kaiden is. Tis why he DIED in ME1 ^.^
2. Weapons and skills are..meh at best. Doesn't offer anything the others can do better.
3. Dialogue is not very compelling
4. LI was...embarrassing. I felt bad for attempting it. >..>
5. Personality was a bit uptight and confrontational. One line he is "Shep is in charge, whatever you say goes" but when it comes to the other crew he goes 180.
In short, out of the bunch, he doesn't shine and seems...out of place. Oddly reminds me of Pressley. Doesn't contribute much, besides the Armor upgrade, and sticks out as more die-hard loyalist than the Cerberus Cheerleader.
But like I said, I disliked Kadien and even Zaaed (bleh) more. Jacob has potential just wasn't polished enough to shine.
And I'm biracial myself. And honestly, I don't think its skin color. I don't recall people saying anything about Oblivion, Halo (Johnson is Awesome!), FFVII (Barret was a fav), Gears of War ( Cole Train BABY!), ect.
Its all about panache...and in a game you expect characters to be vibrant, Jacob is just lacking.

So you think Jacob should have been more stereotypical like Cole Train rather than just "normal"? That's one of the things i liked about Jacob. He wasn't just another stereotype but a normal guy.

I think they've all been eliminated by now actually.

I had a conversation with a friend of mine about Jacob. I had just started and my friend had beaten the game. He said he didn't like Jacob at all and I said I actually liked him. However, after playing through the game and meeting the rest of the team Jacob moved his way to the back of the list.
Since then I have come to this revalation, he was an intresting character at the beginning because he filled you in on everything and gave you a lot of intresting information about what was going on at the time but after that he really didn't give you anything. Going to see Jacob was almost as bad as Garrus always making those damn calibrations. Jacob was the classic character used to bring people up to speed and once they are up to speed, the character becomes useless. Same thing goes for Kaiden, although Bioware gave him a slightly better personality. At least he had a decent backstory.

I think that Jacob should have been anything but normal, in order to not fade into background when compared to the rest of the crew. Explore his background, give him a couple of unresolved issues, some sort of personality quirk...

Jacob is different. He's your most grounded. emotionally stable squadmate. No real issues that he can't deal with on his own.

I'll reinforce this point. Cole Train is one of the dumbest most insensitive portrayals out there and just reinforces how inept the writers at Epic are.
Also Baret is pretty much a stereotype as well in the way he talks. Expecting all black characters to act that way kind of reinforces some of the poing of the OP. People disagreeing with that are clearly jaded and missing the bigger picture.

Extreme masculine black, with bulging veins emphasizing strength and viritility. (Actually one of the more racist trends in the porn industry: the black guy almost always tops).
The fill-it-in primitive animal insignia and copper emblems: a draw back to primitive African cultures and technology, but also emphasizing strength and cunning.
Hooded robe and staff with animal-imagery weapon(bird-eye scyth head): scythes aren't a modern civilized weapon, but as a staff emblem it combines to call forth a mystical shaminism tradition, accented by the previous copper animal emblems of a primitive but magical and wise/insightful individual. The wise savage, who despite being so far removed from the modern world and technology is insightful and knows thing no modern person would and is capable of the mystical and supernatural.
Also called the Magic ****** character. The way his hood shadows his face also implies he is a silent, withdrawn character, letting his imposing figure keep idle chatter away, but also suggesting that everything he does say is backed by weighted considerations and heavy insights.
White clothes on a black man: a whole lot there that should be obvious.
