Are you suggesting that Jacob would be more popular if he was white? Seriously now. I think he'd be more boring if he was a white.

Oh well it's kind of ironic anyway that even though that isn't what i was saying i actually do think Jacob would be more popular if he was a cute white guy. :P

I agree.  Probably a little more popular, definately less hated.  He'd never be that high in popularity though for all the reasons others have mentioned as to why they don't like him.

Jacob isn't a badly-drawn character by any means. The problem is that he doesn't really stand out in any way. He doesn't have much conflict in his life. The only real backstory we get on him is his father, which he deals very well with. It's nice to see someone handle personal issues well, but that isn't enough.

The other characters all stand out much more. Samara, Thane, Grunt, and Legion are not just aliens, but they have somewhat alien mindsets. Tali and Garrus have the added familiarity of being from ME1, and are easily the most fleshed-out characters. Miranda and Jack both have attitude issues and unusual elements - Miranda was genetically engineered, Jack is a super-biotic with a complicated past. Even the minor Normandy crew stand out. Jacob doesn't.

Jacob's a nice guy, and a realistic character. The problem is that he's not interesting enough. For comparison, take Sergeant Johnson from Halo. He's nowhere near as realistic as Jacob, being a mix of military stereotypes (especially Marine stereotypes). But he's also more interesting, because he's awesome to have around.

I didnt use Jacob because he was ineffectual. As a Biotic, Samara and Jack are better, and as a Combatant, Garrus, Grunt, or Thane made way better choices, not to mention the fact that Samara can use an AR. So once I got them, I never looked back. As to his comparison to Alenko, I had the same problem with him too. Liara is a better biotic, Wrex can make do in a pinch if you stat him right, and Ashley (who I despise with a passion), Garrus or Wrex make for way better combatants. And add the fact that he had a lukewarm personality/background just made him uninteresting all around. I cant even say that Alenko was more interesting to interact with. Usually I sacrificed him over Ash because she was more effective, but sacted her in my Adept(Fem) storyline to have a different set of circumstances for my ME2 runthrough(I ended u with Liara) from my Soldier.

No idea, actually. It should have been locked a long time ago, imho.
A better question - why are we bumping it again?)

Ok, here's my deal with jacob.

He has no opinion, on anything. He's not interesting. Seriously, his father had a kingdom going on for 10 years, and for some reason, I didn't give a damn. Because he's black? maybe, but I doubt it. I felt the same way about kaidan, so I don't think it's that. I've made them both die in my main character's game.
All of the other characters have outspoken opinions about something. Jacob doesn't. I can't reallyd escribe it.

Also, Jacob was an **** against tali and thane for absolutely no reason, while they are probably the nicest people around. If the option 'shoot jacob through the eye' had appeared at that time, I'd have taken it.

Actually he does have a strong opinion of assassin's, he hates them, which is why he was rude to Thane.  Also, Tali started the exchange with Jacob.

Jacob is one of my least favorite squad mates for a lot of reasons and its not because he's black. He just seems the most boring to me. One because when I'm male Shep he always seems to be very formal and says he doesn't like forced talks or that its none of my business.

I feel like Garrus doesn't have much conversation either but he does have some funny dialogue in some places. I got to know him some in ME1 and he's like Male Shep's best bud. I don't feel like that's the case with Jacob. At first he is fine and you learn some interesting things about him but after the first few missions you never really find out anything else and he closes up.

Also, his loyalty mission was interesting though some of the things going on there always make me squirm.

Combat wise: I don't use him much especially in higher difficulty settings, but I do like his ammo power.

Finally, his female Shep romance dialogue is horrible. I'd have to say I'd pick Kaiden over him, who I also thought was boring in ME1, just because I think some of his lines are more sweet and Jacob's are just horribly written. If he had better dialogue, I'd consider him or Garrus.

Speaking of Jacob's loyalty quest with his crazy/loser dad. Did anyone notice the higher concentration of random black npc characters in comparison to the very limited number we see throughout the game? I wonder what that was about. Just my random observation of the day. ;)

Hmm, I thought there are quite a lot of dark-skinned NPCs in the game...But my memory can be fuzzy.
Besides, the crew of that ship did not seem to be espetially dark for me. Most of them looked heavy tanned (which is more than understandable) than black...Oh well, time to play the game again, I guess. Will try to pay more attention to such minor details next time.

His rudeness to Thane is another reason I don't care much about Jacob. No, it is not rational. But it also has nothing to do with Jacob's skin color.

The same with Tali. From ME1 I've grown to regard her as a precios little sister, and if someone upsets my sister, I tend not to care about who started it. Again, irrational. But not racist.
Besides...even though Tali started it, she was right, just like in Miranda/Jack conflict Jack is right, even though Jack is an attacker. You know, brushing aside the whole attack on quarian fleet as if it was nothing worth being angry about...That actually made me think less of Jacob. He was supposed to disapprove of the actions like that, after all. He said it himself. I'd expected him to express his disagreement with Cerberus, say that yes, the attack on Flotilla is unforgivable, no, he had nothing to do with it and if he had any way to prevent it, he would, no, nothing like that is going to happen over the cource of this Cerberus operation etc. Yet he just tried to sweep the whole thing under carpet.
Disappointing.

Oh come on! I can't believe people are still falsely accusing Jacob of being rude to Tali when it was the complete opposite. While Tali was mostly justified in her attitude it still doesn't make sense to say Jacob was being a jerk becasue he made the terribly offensive act of....... telling Tali  about the ship AI who she will be working with ?

Well, I've explicitely said that it doesn't make sence. It is an emotional reaction, the same sort I'd have if someone made my little sister cry.
Still, for all the talk about how he doesn't trust Cerberus and doesn't agree always agree with their methods, when confronted by someone who is justifiebly angry at his organisation he behaves as if it is no big deal. Seems a little bit hypocritical. As for AI comment,in itself it wasn't bad. Context is everything.

Oh, and Jacob was purposefully rude to Thane, the is no room for misunderstandings about it.

How does he behave as if it isn't a big deal? He's understanding of how she feels and says he wasn't a part of the injustice done to here people. Glad you admit that the people seething at Jacob the AI comment aren't being reasonable.

Reasonable or not, it has nothing to do with Jacob's skin color anyway. Prejudises about skin color are not the only ones people have, after all. Not nessesary even the main ones. Tendencies to pick an old friend over  aquaitance, Cerberus hater over Cerberus agent (if one dislikes Cerberus, that is), heck, a hot girl over a guy (not that it applies to me, lol. But look at the number of talimancers...)  should not be ignored. Heh, it would be hard to base personal preferrance of Tali over Jacob on skin color, for noone has any idea about what color she is. Purple seems to be favourite, though=)

And still nothing about Thane. He sertainly done nothing to antagonise Jacob...

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with inter-party conflict. For example, in DA:O almost everyone teases or even outright insults everyone elce at least once, but that doesn't make me dislike any of the characters. Why? Because their constant arguements are quite amusing.
Problem with Jacob is that he manages to both 1) Slightly get on some people's nerves and 2) Is not amusing enough to compensate for it.
Aggravating characters are fine - they make you feel something.
Completely bland and boring characters are...well, less fun than aggravating ones, but still ok, cos' at least they don't make you feel any negative emotions.
However, when an already boring character does something that player does not appreciate - then it's a ready recipie for dislike.
