I can't hate a poorly written, boring, character without being accused of being subconciously racist.

His romace dialogue has reached cult status, because they are cheesy, really cheesy. Admitably, the fact that he is black, might have amplified this.

I had to endure my femshep's table writhing/forced flirting whenever I went to talk to him, which was sickening, and then he had absolutely nothing to say. His ****** poor romance dialogue doesn't help either.
I liked Kaidan, he had a crappy childhood and developed into a normal human being who didn't need a therapist or a mommy substitute. If Jacob was the same he would have been great. He wasn't.

People don't like Jacob because of his writing, and the voice acting from FemShep while talking to him turns people off even more. I think he's fine as a buddy character, but no, he's not particularly interesting.
People also tend to not like the Human Male Party Member, which is why he's being compared to Kaidan. Human Males who are not the protagonist are boring to some people, by default, in a video game, and even if they did have a great background story, those people wouldn't bother to find out more about the character. So Jacob was kind of doomed from the start, and his dialogue and loyalty mission didn't help.

He does open up even to a male Shepard if you come back a couple of times. I'm not sure what triggers it, but there is more dialogue after he goes into his "I'm not big on forcing these talks" loop.
I do go back and talk to him, as much as I can, male or female Shep.
You have to admit, it's still not a lot, and the conclusion of all of it is still pretty much "case closed, I don't want to talk about it anymore".
Oh sure. Like I said, he's not exactly a big favorite of mine either. I'm just saying there is some more dialogue there, and I think they tried to write him like Jack or Miranda where there's this deeper layer you eventually get to discover if you prod long enough, but he's just too much the boyscout, so even when he does open up a little, there's just nothing interesting there. It's all consistent and in character, but... yawn.

He's just somehow, just is there. I like him for not being as excentric drama queen as most of the crew happens to be but. Just felt like he didn't have a purpose. Also I couldn't talk to him because the female Shepard has a habit of using the most horrible flirting tone while talking to him, even if I just want to know "how are you doing?" Maybe some more official approach to this soldier, and more conflict between him and Cerberus could've saved his character?

Its because you are so adorable. That and you dont go around accusing hundreds of people of being racist.
NOW I KNOW WHAT I HAVE TO DO.
Accuse everyone of being racist. In an irrational response-provoking manner. The secret hath been revealed. Maybe then you'll all get mad enough at me to respond in block text!
Everyone, you're all racist if you don't like Jacob. And if you don't sleep with him you're gay.
If you don't like strip mining you're anti-space exploration. And if you didn't vote for the Terra Firma party you're anti-Earth. If you didn't like the way they handled the first LIs you're anti Bioware. That's right. We're all pigs and monsters.

Now, if they had directed the femShep VA to warm up to Jacob, based on the character's responses, and given Jacob a bit more backstory, that would have been awesome. She could have started normally, maybe a little cold, gotten more interested as Jacob told her more about his wild life and working with Cerberus. A growing flirtation, skirting the line between officer and crew, and then culminating in Jacob taking a risk to get it on with the sexy Commander, that would have rocked. Not some skanky commander tramp walking into the Armory and basically hanging out a sign that says "OPEN."

Here's my problem with Jacob: My femShep, who already stated that she was in love with Kaidan, talks to him like a $3 **** desperate for a hit of crack. No one else causes her voice acting to change that way. It's disgusting. There's no way to get her to stop oozing all over him. I want my romances to grow, not have them thrust upon me. Repeatedly. Even after I say I'm not interested. Seriously? It's the fault of ****** poor writing, not his skin color.

Every time her voice does that while I'm talking to Jacob I instinctually look around for a rolled up newspaper to swat at her with.
"Bad Jennifer Hale! Bad! Stop that! Stop it! Bad girl!"

The big elephant in the room here that no one wants to talk about is the fact that Jacob is black.
I knew it could not go on forever before someone mentioned this. I like Jacob. I think he is a stand up guy. If my femshep had not romanced Kaidan, and if I were more given to infidelity, I would have chosen him.
But from another angle...why should it follow that because someone does not like another who is a minority that it must be, at least in part, because that person is a member of an ethnic minority (in present day)? That's just insane.

There is that. I would be creeped out of a girl talked to *ME* like that. I want a girl to like me like Tali, not like femshep to Jacob. If femshep treated Jacob like she did Kaidan, then hell, I would have made a femshep just to explore that romance.

Kaiden literally blends into the generic crew background. If I didnt talk to him would of thought he was one of those non interactive crew members on the ship.

I like Jacob. I just like everyone else more. Maybe Jacob makes a great drinking buddy. Where was that mission? Shepard is the only one who gets to challenge the Dark Star bartender to a drinking match? I bet Grunt would win. Because he's Krogan.
Oh yeah, I went there.

Take Kaidan, for example. Like him or hate him, you have to admit that he has OODLES of character hooks. He gets headaches. He went to Jump Zero. He had a bad encounter with a turian instructor that makes him afraid of his own strength. He is somewhat sexually conservative (doesn't like to kiss and tell, turns down a threesome). He tries to get over his past and not whine about it. He's respectful. He doesn't rush into stuff. You can *describe* Kaidan until the cows come home.
In contrast, I feel l can't really *describe* Jacob anywhere near to the same degree. He's an ex-Alliance soldier... and... um... he had issues with his father years ago? He may or may not have had a thing with Miranda? Really, that's about it. There's not a lot of stuff you can point to and say, "here is this thing about Jacob." He doesn't talk much about himself so we don't really know much about him, therefore there's not a lot we can really say about him.
You know what I wish? That Bioware had given Jacob a hobby that he got really excited about. Every now and again, you'd come into the armory and he'd have just finished watching, I dunno, Zero G Football, and he starts talking about his favorite team, the Volus Clanbusters ("You'd think volus would suck at football. Little bastards can be a real pain when they want to be.") He could talk about how he wanted to be a zero G football player when he was younger, but didn't have the skills so decided to join the Alliance instead so he could travel the world, blah blah blah. Stuff like this would let us grasp his character and describe him a lot better. Rather than, "Jacob is... um... nice, I guess?" we could say, "Jacob is a football fanatic who used to play in minor league, but he still likes watching it on extranet."
