As a character Jacob is a tad more interesting than Kaiden but not by much.

Jacob is yuck, but Tali or more of a waste of space than him. For a soldier though, i'd rather have someone like Ash. I hardly ever use Jacob for anything.

Probably not a good idea to talk bad about tali around here but i'm glad you see that he's better than Kaiden at least.

1. Honest and speaks his mind
2. Trustworthy. The squad mate most likely to always have your back.
3. Underrated in combat. While i think he would be better suited with an assault rifle/Shotgun combo his toughness and pull ability is invaluable early on in the game on the more difficult levels. Great choice for leading second team during suicide mission.
Negative
1. Doesn't open up enough and keeps a lot about his past to himself.
2. Gives bad advice on more than one occasion. Suggesting to destroy Legion rather than question him. Suggesting going through the Omega 4 relay even if you aren't properly prepared. Volunteering to enter the ventilation shaft to open the door, despite lacking the tech skills to do the job fast enough.
3. Looks like Kanye West (Really should have stuck with his original look Bioware)

Jacob isn't the only person to give bad advice. Miranda suggest giving Legion to Cerberious' weapon devision and gives bad advice about the biotid field during the suicide mission.

I have made this post before. It's not an elephant in the room - it's a racist. (OPs first statement)Madi wrote...
The big elephant in the room here that no one wants to talk about is the fact that Jacob is black.

I too am confused by this post. Is it even possible for an elephant to be racist?

Oh okay. Sorry for the misunderstanding. Thanks for clearing that up. Would you mind explaining to everyone here how you find me to be a racist or are you satistied with making outrageous, blanket statements about people and leaving at that?

Please if you go through this thread there are clearly some racist remarks in it. Even underhanded and there are others by those who do not know the Western American culture and cannot grasp why certain things we would find unsettling. (Like when I brought up COLE TRAIN)
Jag, you are not taking a position with the OP, merely making him feel ok about (probably) having expressed himself in the way he has.
Kudos for the Cole Train joke and for caring for your American brother - there's virtue in it. OP, find a new position and try to think before you blurt next time.

Don't bother taking in the
criticisms of Jacob on this forum. It doesn't represent most players at
all. In fact with how they regard almost any character it seems almost
unsettling. Unabashed love for some, and reviled hate for others. Its
kind of insulting to the writers who compared to others do a pretty
damn good job. And the VA of Jacob also does a good job.
I agree. The writing is very good compared to other games. Especially the
characters. Jacob included.

Not my fault OP. Whether you forgive me or not for not being deferential to your position that Jacob is disliked cos he is black is... well, kind of unimportant. Most people don't like him not because he is black... so... back to the closet for your racism?

I didn't read anyting about ME2 prior to playing it, aside from finding out about three of my new team members, A black dude, Some brunette chick and a bald chick. Coolio, lets play ME2.
Start playing intro. Hey cool, that must be the black guy I read about. haven't played many games with black guys in them, nice for a change. Hey, he's kinda nice, helping me out here. Geez looking at his teeth really hurts my eyes though...
Oh hey, that must be my other squad mate, her name's Miranda. Hello Miranda, I'm commander Shepherd, Thanks for bringing me back to li...oh ok I won't talk to you again, you're a little uptight...maybe if you wore looser pants you would feel more comfortable and possibly lose the attitude, but i'll keep it to myself. Jacob is my friend, I'll go talk to him.
Hey he's an alliance soldier now working for Cerberus, like me. Awesome, we have a bit in common. Oh neat, it's Tali! I love Tali. And Joker ! Woo and another, more awesome Normandy that has an actual reason to step foot in the captain's cabin (which later became 'Jesus i am so sick of feeding these fish' which then became 'So I have to start a lesbian relationship with my human Blackberry for someone to take care of my fish?' which THEN became 'Oh it looks nice enough empty...').
Well, all aboard! I'm gonna go talk to my friend, Jacob. See how's he's doing. Heya Jacob ! Wait...Shepherd? Shepherd ! What are you doing !? Get off that table ! Oh my god how embarrassing...
Ok, I'll go pick up these guys from Omega and maybe Jacob will forget that I may have violated Cerberus' sexual harassment policy against him...he seems to be a bit distant now...
Hey a salarian team member. Now this is new! I'm going to swap Miranda for him in this next mission so I don't have to keep wondering how much pain she is in because of that outfit. Ok, on to the next guy. Archangel? Seems a bit pretentious to call yourself Archa-OMG GARRUS !!! GARRUS GARRUS GARRUS !!! Oh no Garrus got shot !!! Oh no, Garrus is lost in his life !!! Oh no, Garrus doesn't have a table in his little room that I can jump on and make completely out-of-character sexual advances from (ok maybe I thought of this later when I found out he was a LI...) !!!
Now I have more people to talk to and I don't have to go back into the armoury and have Mr Suddenly-Turned-Passive-Agressive remind me about regulations that I have no intention of breaking !
And there you have it. For me he started off great. Then he was overshadowed by more interesting characters, coupled with the fact that I felt like bioware took control of MY Shepherd and turned her into a table humping sex offender every time I went to say hello to the friendly guy who helped me get out of the Cerberus facility.
And as far as I'm concerned Jacob isn't the most unpopular, Miranda is. Because Miranda is an idiot who wears heels to a gunfight.
I apologise for any typos, I don't have my glasses handy.

Just personal preference. I don't know if that makes me racist or not as far as political correctness goes.
Plus he had a bit of an attitude problem. He wan't my least favourite character, though.

Best post I've read all week here.
Kudos.
And Miranda is a ****, no doubts there, but her passive is nice and she can strip all three defenses by herself...makes her useful whereas Jacob looses his usefulness quickly and is out of my team for the rest of the game the moment I pick up Zaeed from Omega.
