Female gamer here, and although I prefer Garrus for his sexy voice and the longstanding friendship between he and Shepard, I like Jacob a lot.

I like Garrus as a friend but romancing him is just plain gross to me. I find it pretty disturbing that a lot of people favor Garrus' romance over Jacob's. Maybe I'd better understand if he didn't look like a dinosaur .

To each their own. I, for one, find the fact that my character is forced to sound like a cheap sex-starved call-girl when I'm just trying to make a small talk much more disturbing and off-putting. It pretty much killed all the possibility of romancing Jacob to me. Being called a "priiize" can call to memory a long history of objectifying women. Not to mention that being compared unfavoravly to one's ex-girlfriend is just plain insulting.

Imho, looks are not important. As for Garrus, I like his voice, sence of humor, badass attitude and ultimate loyalty. Plus, relationships that take roots in long friendship and camaraderie tend to be more stable that those born of minute passion. If there's anything to say about Garrus romance, is that it isn't superficial.

Yeah, well, that's why femShep's voice when she's talking to Jacob is a standing joke on the forums.

Most of us don't even talk to Jacob with our femSheps. I don't. I'd like to keep my dignity, thank you.

Exactly!

For a moment, forget you know what any of them look like. Just think about what you know of their character.

Garrus is the best man on that ship. Maybe not the most attractive to most humans, maybe not the funniest (though he has his moments), but just way deep down he's got the finest heart of all of them.

Besides...turian Batman!

The big elephant in the room here that no one wants to talk about is the fact that Jacob is black. Now before you start getting ultra defensive and start accusing me of reverse racism I’d like to point out that I’m biracial and have no racial biases of any kind.  Secondly I’m not saying the reason that Jacob  is such a  massively unpopular is because the people who don’t like Jacob are inherently racist. However that doesn’t mean that the fact that Jacob is black isn’t a factor. In fact I would say it’s a significant factor.

I think it’s probably largely subconscious. Jacob is a relatively basic character with nothing incredibly interesting about him although still a much more solid, well rounded character than you’ll find in most games. The issue is I think that most white gamers just find it difficult to relate to black characters. I think that’s one of the main reasons why black characters are so rare in video games and actual black protagonists are nearly nonexistent in video games.Especially non- stereotypical characters (i.e. C.J. from GTA)  Can you honestly tell me that if Jacob was a suave white guy he’d be this unpopular? Just look at Kaden who Jacob is commonly compared to.  Most people seem to agree that he isn’t much more if at all more interesting a character than Jacob yet he’s still infinitely more popular than Jacob. Once again that doesn’t mean that you’re a racist but I just think it clearly shows that race plays a factor in a lot of things, whether subconscious or otherwise. Although I think the fact that he bears a strong resemblance to Kanye West didn’t really help either. I don’t really get why his look was changed so dramatically from Mass Effect Galaxy. It’s like he’s a completely different person.

http://masseffect.bi.../market/galaxy/

Happy to see someone's brought this up. I do believe this is a subconscious factor. When I saw that Jacob would be on the team I was just as glad to see him as the fact that there is a significant larger amount of women in Shepard's team in ME2(although two of them wear high heels, beacuse that's very practical in a firefight). It's like that in all sorts of medias. I hope that over time this will change, I'm sick of watching a (hollywood)movie and it's always a man(white) who's the hero. It does influence how people perceive the world.
Jacob is a well rounded character, which can be said about all of the squadmates. But none of them have the depths like the ones in ME1(my personal opinion). It's an overall problem with ME2.. Why he's not popular as a LI (despite the shirtless scene :D) I would say is largely due to the fact that femsheps tone is too flirty, not sincere enough. I know that bothered me a lot. So nothing wrong with Jacob there, but the attraction seemed a bit off, forced.
Can't agree with the Kanye West comparison. Is that a general opinion? :P

I agree with the OP as well but how can you not see that Jacob looks at least a little bit like Kanye?

I did some serious checking up on Kanye and well, maybe they share the same lips. Saw a picture of Jacob with Kanye West kind of glasses and sure, could have fooled me. I guess I've missed it beacuse the personalities are so different. ^_^

Looks may  not be the most important thing but Turians just aren't human enough like the Asari. Garrus is a buddy but fornicating with him is completely out of the question. Sorry.

As I've said, to each their own.

Thing is, something being "disturbing" is highly subjective. I might find liking someone who is calling you his "prize" disturbing, as it brings in mind too many unfortunate implications. So what? I am not going to make a deep-reaching phychology-related claims that most people who like Jacob romance are subconsciosly misogynistic. Just like I don't appreciate the claims that most people who dislike Jacob are subconsciosly racist, to return on topic.

Seriously, though, it's like... I don't know, but she sounds like a drunk.. you know what. Any further word I say will probably get me banned for a good week or so, so I'm just gonna keep my mouth shut at this point.

Honestly i didn't mind it that much but i can other stand how other people (especially guys) can feel a little weird about how femshep talks to Jacob. Still I don't see how it makes sense to blame Jacob for that.

It is not, technically, Jacob's fault. However, it makes interacting with him unpleasant, which of course impacts the popularity of that character.

If I was a girl I'd go for Thane because the other 2 options are....:

1. Garrus, I agree that fornicating with a Turian... or maybe just Garrus' body shape puts him out of the question.

2. Jacob... the risk is toooo heavy and I can't get past femSheps voice when she says: "I'm more interested in just talking for a bit."

So Thane it is.

If I were a female, I would take total offense at my Shepard's interaction with Jacob in that particular scene. Quite frankly, I already do as a male playing a female Shepard, but not to a large extent.

Jacob is boring and uninteresting because that's the way bioware wanted him to be.

That's why I can't even consider romancing Jacob. Not that there's anything wrong with those who like him as LI, of course.

Though much earlier in the thread there've  been some people who considered even that to be a manifestation of racism (rolls eyes).

It can't count as racism if you could make yourself go through with it with generous applications of mute. :D

Hmm, I doubt that bioware intended for any character to be uninteresting. However, it is very possible that they've made Jacob the most "normal" member of the squad specifically in order to avoid any accusations of racism. Oh, the irony.

Unfortunately, I can't. I know what Shepard sounds like in that convesation, and I cannot un-learn it=).

As a side note, what's wrong with not liking Jacob because he's black? I didn't like Balak because he was a Batarian, despite his excellent character references and resume.

I'm just sayin'.

NO! There is NO comparison, Kaiden has a FANTASTIC LI Dialogue (AND love scene) with femShep in ME1, and a fearless fighter who will take on 2 Armatures AND 3 Destroyers (Feros upper Skyway on return to Thorian) and anything else that gets in the way. And yes I SAFE Kaiden @ the bomb and let Ash die, I hope that Kaiden is in ME3 AND the movie.

Like the post for the most part but you lost me when you say Miranda is less popular than Jacob. Maybe to you she is  (Same with me) but she's a very popular character regardless if it's almost entirely based on her sex appeal.

Yeah, I am completely wrong about Miranda, alot of people seem to like her whatever their reason may be. I also admit that alot of my Miranda hate may *possibly* come from some feminine rivalry >.>

You have a terrible sense of humor.  Maybe I was joking, but now you'll never know.  That's what you get for offending my dainty sensibilities.  Scandalous.
