I just realised Jacob is memorable, hes like the only real black man ive seen in that game. I know most people are mixed race in that world, but you see plenty of white people. Go figure

Don't forget about Captain Anderson.  Oh and a few random npc characters during Jacob's loyalty mission.

The big elephant in the room here that no one wants to talk about is the fact that Jacob is black. Now before you start getting ultra defensive and start accusing me of reverse racism I’d like to point out that I’m biracial and have no racial biases of any kind.  Secondly I’m not saying the reason that Jacob  is such a  massively unpopular is because the people who don’t like Jacob are inherently racist. However that doesn’t mean that the fact that Jacob is black isn’t a factor. In fact I would say it’s a significant factor.

I think it’s probably largely subconscious. Jacob is a relatively basic character with nothing incredibly interesting about him although still a much more solid, well rounded character than you’ll find in most games. The issue is I think that most white gamers just find it difficult to relate to black characters. I think that’s one of the main reasons why black characters are so rare in video games and actual black protagonists are nearly nonexistent in video games.Especially non- stereotypical characters (i.e. C.J. from GTA)  Can you honestly tell me that if Jacob was a suave white guy he’d be this unpopular? Just look at Kaden who Jacob is commonly compared to.  Most people seem to agree that he isn’t much more if at all more interesting a character than Jacob yet he’s still infinitely more popular than Jacob. Once again that doesn’t mean that you’re a racist but I just think it clearly shows that race plays a factor in a lot of things, whether subconscious or otherwise. Although I think the fact that he bears a strong resemblance to Kanye West didn’t really help either. I don’t really get why his look was changed so dramatically from Mass Effect Galaxy. It’s like he’s a completely different person.

http://masseffect.bi.../market/galaxy/

Again I'll refer you to my post on the previous page, but this is "pig in a dress" at its finest.

The deflective prose, the almost agonizing apology for even bringing it up.

*yawn*, next topic please........his race is irrelevant, OP trolled and won. This topic inevitably leads to sensible discussion and likewise terrible discussion.

If a white Jacob had the exact same lines as this Jacob he would be equally uninteresting.

"Im not really big on this buddy thing commander..another time Perhaps"

I mean how about your work w/ the Corsairs eh? Or anything other than daddy issues. How did you grow up?

Oh you feel the exact same way about the mission after every member is recruited.....cheers

Agree. And his character is boring. There's already a super-shep on the ship. Yaay, you were treated like a throw away soldier in the alliance. You aren't shep and all soldier's are throw aways to every military force out there.

Your dad had a harem of 'tards...boohooo. Don't care.

That Jacob acts like a stereotype from our time makes it all even worse. Couldn't care what race Jacob is. But i'm not going to give a flip about any skin color, ethnicity, human or alien that acts like Jacob and is about as interesting as a 90's mtv video. Jacob could be a green asari and would still be just as boring, but a little funnier for acting like a mid-2000's priveleged/schooled black person acting like he was from the hood, all hard because he played a couple of game starring 'fity-cent.

Anyway, everyone knows that if anything the human race will be more asian than anything in the future. China will take over and all humans will have genetically altered anime eyes. Duh!

Okay well I didn't know about that and while that may be the case I'm sure the Captain Anderson is generally perveived as black by most of us. Same thing with Kaiden.

I'm sorry, the term reverse racist just is bugging me to no end, and that's because it is complete nonsense. Racism is discrimination and prejudice based on race, thus the use of Reverse Racism in this sense is complete bull****.
Besides, I never thought of Jacob as the black squadmate, I always just thought of him as the squadmate who could use biotics (just not that well)

Hey, Jacob is not the least popular char in ME2. In my circles, Tali is.

Pretty much everyone likes or is indifferrent about Jacob, but there's no hate going on.

I can't believe someone pulled the race card on this. There are PLENTY of games with very popular characters that are black. Louis from Left 4 Dead (although I find him annoying, he whines like a b****), Coach from Left 4 Dead 2 (he's also notably nice, however he's got more to his personality), and Gordon Freeman (okay, he looks mixed and I doubt is completely black but he's probably half/half judging from his looks yet he's one of the most popular characters in gaming history.. aside from Mario & Link of course).

I am three races. And I will tell you that his popularity or unpopularity has nothing to do with race (for the majority at least). He's very nice and you feel you can trust him early on in the game. That's a plus. However, he's no where near as interesting as Jack, Tali, Garrus, etc.. I didn't even find Kaidan that interesting although the whole "big decision" you need to make really escalates his popularity beyond what it would be otherwise. I thought Carth was much more interesting than Kaidan and Jacob combined (Carth is from KOTOR and has had Kaidan compared to him).

I think every character in the Mass Effect universe so far is interesting in their own ways, however out of all the characters out there I do not feel Jacob stands out as the most interesting, not even close. Do I feel he should return? Yeah why not, he's a loyal team member and is a nice guy who you can trust to have at your back when facing the Reapers. However I wouldn't push it further than that.

Funny the OP talked about "white guys not being able to relate" yet HALF THE CREW IS MADE UP OF VARIOUS SPECIES OF ALIENS! Sorry for the caps, but it warrants that important fact. If you want to get technical then MORE than half your team if you don't include the Normandy crew members from ME1 & ME2 are aliens of various species.

So far, the most interesting "human" squad mate in my opinion is SuZe (Jack/Subject Zero whatever you prefer to call her). Besides her, the most interesting have been aliens in my opinion.

They need a "nice guy" in the game, Jacob fits the role properly, as did Kaidan.. except Kaidan had a small attitude which gets explained in Mass Effect 1 however he was still a "nice guy" overall, as is Garrus.. yet Garrus has been at Shepard's side since fairly early in Mass Effect 1 so you should definitely expect him to be a common favorite.

Honestly I see mostly is people pulling the "race card" card. (i.e. people accusing others of using the race card) And yes it makes sense for people to be able to relate easier to animated characters of various fictional alien species because you don't really have anything to associate them to and can therefore look at them completely objectively. Oh and Gordan Freeman black? I'm thinking no. Not even partially. I know you never see him in game but based on what he looks like on the cover i don't really see it at all.

Don't care what race he is. Don't like him. He's a weak character. Just like Kaiden was the weak character in ME1... but you don't see people all bent out of shape about Kaiden being a douche with a faux-hawk. Just wish there was a decision that would kill Jacob off and replace him with niket. Then there'd be some tension, at least, between Shep and Niket over who beds Miranda and who is relegated forever to the friend zone.

Jacob is milk-toast, kaiden was milk-toast (but i killed him off), the real question here should be "What new character in ME3 will fill the milk-toast roll?!"

Neither character is a milquetoast (although the name was derived from milk toast).  A milquetoast is timid, indecisive, submissive, and ineffectual.  Whatever their faults, that doesn't accurately describe the behavior of either character, barring perhaps the ineffectual bit in Jacob's case, but that's a gameplay artifact due to him being given a crappy ability set by the devs, in addition to a crappy weapon set.  Kaidan at least had some decent and useful powers, even though he was lacking in the weapon training department, so while he wasn't the most effective combatant, he wasn't largely useless. Although supposedly Jacob is decent on insanity.  I wouldn't really know, as the man bores me and seemed to excel mainly at dying on lower difficulties, so I left him in the armory on my insanity run until it was time to do his loyalty mission.

I'm not sure you understand the concept of racism.

rac·ism (rImage IPBImage IPBsImage IPBzImage IPBImage IPBm)
n.
1. The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2.
Discrimination or prejudice based on race.

At any rate, there aren't actually any human races; we're all part of the subspecies ****** sapiens sapiens.

And there's good hip hop.

I *know* that there is differences in humanity, and if there is even the slightest difference- then someone- by logic- has to be superior. Now according to the dictionary im a racist.

According to people im a racist cause i go around saying niigger.

Meh, didn't read 55 pages. But here goes: the reasons for me not letting Jacob tag along is 1) I prefer to snipe and kill at range (which leads to) 2) Jacob has a pistol and a shotgun i.e. CQC weapons 3) I play on Insane and he lacks Warp and Overload.

I could let him tag along if he had a debuff instead of Lift. But he doesn't, so he stays on the ship most of the time. And I don't agree that he's a boring character. He has morals and concerns, which makes him more alive than most of the hard-asses in this game.

I agree with you here. Racism is racism no matter what race displays it and against which race it is directed at.

I actually find Jacob and is pull ability quite useful early on in the game when playing Insanity but purely from a gameplay point of view his skill set does feel a bit limited later on.

Perhaps I shall say, again, how much I liked Jacob on Lazarus Station and Freedom's Progress, but on the Normandy felt like he became a completely different person who I quickly lost favor for?

Since I'm fairly certain I didn't spontaneously develop race issues during the transit from Freedom's Progress to the Normandy, I'm going to go ahead and say it had nothing to do with his skin color at all and everything to do with the character himself.

Actually, I sort of liked Jacob FOR his blandness.  When they tried to make their other characters interesting it eventually felt a little contrived that EVERYONE had some freak story.  Miranda, for example, I didn't like because the whole thing about her being genetically modified just seemed like they were trying to spice her up last minute (though, admittedly, I didn't follow her story much past her loyalty quest).

And, about Jacob acting stereotypically, I didn't find it bad at all when compared to some other games that take place more than a century in the future.  Unreal Tournament 3 was pretty bad about that...

Jacob isn't boring because he doesn't go emo all the time, he's boring cuz he's just a lump of rock sitting in the corner grumbling for you to leave him alone all the time while undergoing absolutely no character development...

Well great. If this is the case then then what the OP is talking about obviously doesn't apply to you. So there is no reason to get bent out of shape is there? ;)
