I can't believe someone pulled the race card on this. There are PLENTY of games with very popular characters that are black. Louis from Left 4 Dead (although I find him annoying, he whines like a b****), Coach from Left 4 Dead 2 (he's also notably nice, however he's got more to his personality), and Gordon Freeman (okay, he looks mixed and I doubt is completely black but he's probably half/half judging from his looks yet he's one of the most popular characters in gaming history.. aside from Mario & Link of course).
I am three races. And I will tell you that his popularity or unpopularity has nothing to do with race (for the majority at least). He's very nice and you feel you can trust him early on in the game. That's a plus. However, he's no where near as interesting as Jack, Tali, Garrus, etc.. I didn't even find Kaidan that interesting although the whole "big decision" you need to make really escalates his popularity beyond what it would be otherwise. I thought Carth was much more interesting than Kaidan and Jacob combined (Carth is from KOTOR and has had Kaidan compared to him).
I think every character in the Mass Effect universe so far is interesting in their own ways, however out of all the characters out there I do not feel Jacob stands out as the most interesting, not even close. Do I feel he should return? Yeah why not, he's a loyal team member and is a nice guy who you can trust to have at your back when facing the Reapers. However I wouldn't push it further than that.
Funny the OP talked about "white guys not being able to relate" yet HALF THE CREW IS MADE UP OF VARIOUS SPECIES OF ALIENS! Sorry for the caps, but it warrants that important fact. If you want to get technical then MORE than half your team if you don't include the Normandy crew members from ME1 & ME2 are aliens of various species.
So far, the most interesting "human" squad mate in my opinion is SuZe (Jack/Subject Zero whatever you prefer to call her). Besides her, the most interesting have been aliens in my opinion.
They need a "nice guy" in the game, Jacob fits the role properly, as did Kaidan.. except Kaidan had a small attitude which gets explained in Mass Effect 1 however he was still a "nice guy" overall, as is Garrus.. yet Garrus has been at Shepard's side since fairly early in Mass Effect 1 so you should definitely expect him to be a common favorite.
Honestly I see mostly is people pulling the "race card" card. (i.e. people accusing others of using the race card) And yes it makes sense for people to be able to relate easier to animated characters of various fictional alien species because you don't really have anything to associate them to and can therefore look at them completely objectively. Oh and Gordan Freeman black? I'm thinking no. Not even partially. I know you never see him in game but based on what he looks like on the cover i don't really see it at all.
Yeah that's what I was saying, that I couldn't believe someone would actually try to pull the race card in regards to Jacob. It's ridiculous for the reasons I stated.
As far as Gordon Freeman goes, google his picture and also the few times you get to see his image from the game he could easily pass for being mixed (white & black). I'd say Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, etc.. however his last name is Freeman and he certainly doesn't look the least bit British (which is the main origin of that last name, I know someone with it). However regardless of his race, he's one of the most popular characters out there. And so is his half black half asian counterpart, Alyx Vance one of the most popular females in gaming. My point was, the TC should have never pulled the race card, it's a bit ridiculous and myself being 3 races and knowing the Mass Effect characters very well from having played both games released so far (along with their respective DLC) extensively, it is far fetched.
This thread should be closed. I don't even know why it has so many pages.
