I can't believe someone pulled the race card on this. There are PLENTY of games with very popular characters that are black. Louis from Left 4 Dead (although I find him annoying, he whines like a b****), Coach from Left 4 Dead 2 (he's also notably nice, however he's got more to his personality), and Gordon Freeman (okay, he looks mixed and I doubt is completely black but he's probably half/half judging from his looks yet he's one of the most popular characters in gaming history.. aside from Mario & Link of course).

I am three races. And I will tell you that his popularity or unpopularity has nothing to do with race (for the majority at least). He's very nice and you feel you can trust him early on in the game. That's a plus. However, he's no where near as interesting as Jack, Tali, Garrus, etc.. I didn't even find Kaidan that interesting although the whole "big decision" you need to make really escalates his popularity beyond what it would be otherwise. I thought Carth was much more interesting than Kaidan and Jacob combined (Carth is from KOTOR and has had Kaidan compared to him).

I think every character in the Mass Effect universe so far is interesting in their own ways, however out of all the characters out there I do not feel Jacob stands out as the most interesting, not even close. Do I feel he should return? Yeah why not, he's a loyal team member and is a nice guy who you can trust to have at your back when facing the Reapers. However I wouldn't push it further than that.

Funny the OP talked about "white guys not being able to relate" yet HALF THE CREW IS MADE UP OF VARIOUS SPECIES OF ALIENS! Sorry for the caps, but it warrants that important fact. If you want to get technical then MORE than half your team if you don't include the Normandy crew members from ME1 & ME2 are aliens of various species.

So far, the most interesting "human" squad mate in my opinion is SuZe (Jack/Subject Zero whatever you prefer to call her). Besides her, the most interesting have been aliens in my opinion.

They need a "nice guy" in the game, Jacob fits the role properly, as did Kaidan.. except Kaidan had a small attitude which gets explained in Mass Effect 1 however he was still a "nice guy" overall, as is Garrus.. yet Garrus has been at Shepard's side since fairly early in Mass Effect 1 so you should definitely expect him to be a common favorite.

Honestly I see mostly is people pulling the "race card" card. (i.e. people accusing others of using the race card) And yes it makes sense for people to be able to relate easier to animated characters of various fictional alien species because you don't really have anything to associate them to and can therefore look at them completely objectively. Oh and Gordan Freeman black? I'm thinking no. Not even partially. I know you never see him in game but based on what he looks like on the cover i don't really see it at all.

Yeah that's what I was saying, that I couldn't believe someone would actually try to pull the race card in regards to Jacob.  It's ridiculous for the reasons I stated.

As far as Gordon Freeman goes, google his picture and also the few times you get to see his image from the game he could easily pass for being mixed (white & black).  I'd say Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, Hispanic, etc.. however his last name is Freeman and he certainly doesn't look the least bit British (which is the main origin of that last name, I know someone with it).  However regardless of his race, he's one of the most popular characters out there.  And so is his half black half asian counterpart, Alyx Vance one of the most popular females in gaming.  My point was, the TC should have never pulled the race card, it's a bit ridiculous and myself being 3 races and knowing the Mass Effect characters very well from having played both games released so far (along with their respective DLC) extensively, it is far fetched.

This thread should be closed.  I don't even know why it has so many pages.

Ah yes, because creating a harem by forcing a bunch of women to subsist on date-rape fruit and exiling and/or killing all potential competitors for said harem is so praiseworthy.

I'm pretty sure he was just trying to be funny.

I was hoping it would.  I thought about being immensely racist and offensive but realized that'd probably just get ME banned.

Maybe we could all post pictures of the Illusive man smoking until the thread gets closed?  Yes, that sounds nice.  This thread is now about Martin Sheen's nicotine obsession.

Wow! I can't believe you're actually admitting you planned to troll this thread in a sad attempt to get it closed.  Have you considered simply ignoring this thread if it bothers you so much? :?

This is, in their defense, a crap thread that has run its course at least six times.

"People don't like Jacob because they're racists!"

"What about the fact he's boring, not particularly effective, and steals characterization from the significant numbers of FemShep players when speaking with him? There's his interesting history you never hear about, his weird-ass loyalty mission, his terrible ideas in the briefing room, and his abuse of a couple well-loved squad members after recruitment to think of as well."

"Racist!"

And round and round the wheel turns. Drastic measures should be called for.

The only thing sad thing here is that this thread is still alive.  Drastic measures indeed.

I think I must be a misanthrope - I really disliked the human squad members in ME1 and rarely took them with me on missions, the same for ME2 - I much prefere the alien characters.
I see enough humans in RL, when I play a game in a fantasy universe I would sooner hang out with aliens.
Jacob is as awful as Kaiden. Both are as dull and uncharismatic as Ashley. I want to leave them all on a remote asteroid to die.

The only reason Miranda is allowed to stay is because of her buns

You and me both, at least as far as ME1 goes. I mean, it's hardly fair when they're up against Garrus/Wrex or Tali/whoever doesn't matter not paying attention to them (;p), but still, I tried an Infiltrator run with Wrex/Ashley as backup, intent on giving her a try because she never bothers me when I talk to her in the cargo hold. She's cautious about aliens, sure, but I'll bet the close descendants of Pacific War POWs weren't really excited about the rise of Japan in the late 70's/early 80's either. Atrocities make for bad blood.

But oh god was that a hard game to complete; only my brogan kept me going. I couldn't even finish the playthrough that was going to involve Kaiden; it felt like I was heading for the airlock and mom made me take my little brother along. Miranda I find...more tolerable, if only because she blends her humanocentric view with an unashamed confidence and moral ambiguity and has some really solid passives for the whole squad.

I really want to say to Kaiden: "man up", but I won't because I don't know what he's been through... but damn, get off the floor at least

You can get him killed in the suicide mission.  I don't think Cerberus would spend money on Lazarus 2.0 for him, especially if they have to retrieve his remains from beyond an event horizon.

For the record, I never let him die.

Although supposedly Jacob is decent on insanity.  I wouldn't really know, as the man bores me and seemed to excel mainly at dying on lower difficulties, so I left him in the armory on my insanity run until it was time to do his loyalty mission.

He's not terrible until you do his loyalty mission.  His early access to Pull and arguably helpful Incendiary Ammo helps make him better than some other undesirables (I'm looking at you, Tali and Legion).  But Barrier and his uncontrollable urge to use it break him.

Here's hoping for a patch that addresses defensive powers just like the patch that fixed ammo powers for companion AI.

Not many people here hate him, you know? I don't care if he stays, as long as I don't have to interact with him using that flirty tone. He can stay, go, fight for me (and I'll use him if he'll turn to be useful), throw himself out of airlock...Guess it'll take about 30 hours of playing till I'll notice=)

Now, if in ME3 his characterisation was improved (no forced flirt, more conversations about his past, no more picking on Thane etc) I'd be glad to have him around.

In ME2, alongside with the genetically perfect human, the perfect krogan, an ancient asari-Jedi, batman BatTurian, the founder of the Blue Suns... well, yeah.

Yeah, but here's the thing though: on paper, Jacob is just as interesting as everyone else.  See, look:

Biotic ex-Alliance Marine who fought during (and survived) the Geth raid on Eden Prime.  Used to be a quasi-legal space pirate doing somewhat questionable stuff for the Alliance in the Traverse, and even that was a bit too restrictive for his taste.  Starred in a game which began with him more or less single-handedly defeating an attempt by Batarian terrorists to hijack a passenger liner and ended with him saving the Council from certain death by way of a Batarian bioweapon (and the implied banging of the aforementioned genetically perfect human, who he'd met earlier in his adventure). Despite deep misgivings, joined Cerberus and had the balls to tell TIM he just plain wouldn't do certain things and if TIM didn't like it, too f-ing bad. And TIM actually went along with this and apparently was totally cool with Jacob being head of security for the Lazarus cell.

Now, I don't know about you, but that guy sounds f*cking awesome.  I'd totally want him on my team.  Instead, we got a boring guy who polishes guns, awkwardly salutes you all the time, refuses to talk about all the interesting sh!t he's done, has a bizarre non-sequitur of a loyalty mission and, by a wiiiiiide margin, the absolute worst romance in the Mass Effect series which is redeemed only by virtue of being hilariously awful meme-fodder.

So true. The most disappointing thing about Jacob is that he had a great potential to become an interesting character. However, said potential was not used in game. All the 'cool' things about him are only mentioned in passing. Why the devs choose to leave the good bits of character outside the focus of interactions with him, and instead focused their efforts on boring stuff - now that is a good question.

There are a ton of reasons to dislike a character. I think we can all agree that one reason some people do not like Jacob, is racism. There. We have now discussed the issue. Can this subject die now? Please? Unless we're really going to have a serious discussion on race and culture in video games? There is already a thread about Jacob. Any discussion as to why people don't like him can go on in there. If this was about any other character, the mods would have shut this down for exactly that reason. And no, I am not accusing the mods of racism. It's just that they've proven that the squeakiest gear gets the grease...
