Hi,

I got given an American version of Awakening as a birthday present (my uncle was on a business trip in America and got it for me the day it was released). i did a bit of research before Awakening came out and there was nothing to suggest it wouldn't be compatible with a UK version of Origins. I even double checked on the FAQs of the official Dragon Age site, it didn't say anything about it not being compatible.

I woke up this morning and unwrapped it, inserted the disc and got faced with an error. It told me to insert my Origins disc, I thought I'd give it a shot. So I put my Origins disc in and it loaded like normal, loaded one of my characters to make sure it was all working and then quit the game. Put the awakening disc back in and it came up with the same error.

After researching the error message for a bit I soon found out that this is a common issue (specially since Awakening didn't come out on a disc for the PS3 in Europe). I've contacted EA and hoping that they'll be able to provide a resolution, though I'm not too hopeful.

I don't understand why the game data is regioned, yet the actual discs aren't. It doesn't make any sense. I don't want to have to download Awakening over the PSN when I've already got the game, likewise I shouldn't have to go out and buy an American version of Origins (after having a look around importing the game could actually turn out to be fairly expensive). I've even contacted a few game rental companies to see if they have the region 1 version of Origins, but my guess is that since they're UK companies they'll only have the region 2 version.

Is there anything I can do about this? It wouldn't be so bad if there was something on the official Dragon Age site (most likely the FAQs section) to say that if the games are different regions then they're not compatible. That way I wouldn't have wasted my Uncle's money (think it was something like $44 dollars from the shop he got it) and wouldn't have this aggro trying to solve the problem.

Thanks for any help.

James

I add a question: is awakening a stand-alone title or needs Origins installed?

It needs Origins installed, though it would seem Origins has to be the same region as Awakening (and vice versa) for some reason.

No worries, still trying to figure out if I can get round the region issue.

Still waiting for EA to come back to me, I'm guessing just having the Awakening disc won't have any redeem code with it.

Has anyone got a solution to this?

The game has to be regionalized due to specifications that are required for each different region and how that relates to disk size. This unfortunately means that North American builds will not be compatible with European builds. I'm sorry for the inconvenience folks.

Michael,

If you are around and reading the forums can you please address the freezing and severe framerate drop issue that many of us are having after installing the Awakening disc patch?

I can't play either Origins or Awakening because the fights are literally unplayable: the game stops and/or plays in slow motion, or the framerate is reduced without the game itself slowing therefore I can't see what I am doing.

Please?

I think it'd be nice to have this stated on the Awakening site under the FAQs section, as quite a few people have seemed to make this mistake and got lumbered with a disc/download that they can't use.

I take it the only way round this then is to either download Awakening from the PSN (I still have no idea why it's not out on a disc in the UK) or buy an American Origins disc? Either way means I'll have to spend another £30, this is a pain.

The main reason I didn't want to download it from the PSN was the actual size of the download, plus I like to have physical copies just in case something goes wrong with my PS3. Sometimes I wish I hadn't got it for the PS3, but still.

Contacted EA about this issue as well and they offered me a refund, anyone else having this issue should contact EA and explain the problem.

Edit: EA 's advice is to take it back to the store you bought it from (which for me is in America, doubt I'll be going over there any time soon), however EA have said they'll send a new 'sealed' copy of the game if you return it to their warranty section. This doesn't help people with a PS3 in the EU (Region 2).
