Tag1702,

You write with such clear comfort of the characters and with such compelling detail that I feel as though I have a new and clearer understanding of the Kelly Chambers character; one that I am happy to associate with her character from now on.

Did your services come with the "Lair of the Shadowbroker" DLC, because I feel as though I ought to pay for a work of such high quality.

Thanks again for applying your skills and talents to a much deserving character.

Okay, you're going to give me a big head here. First of all, thank you very much. I've enjoyed writing both chapters so far, and am glad that you've enjoyed reading them. I'm also looking forward to working more with Kelly and the other characters from ME 2 as the story progresses. I think, with everything being so dark in the second game, and all of the characters, Shepard included, going to such dark places, Kelly just stood out for me because she contrasted that so much. I've actually gotten extremely comfortable with her character.

I write a lot on my own and have been doing it for quite some time now. I'm actually going to be self-publishing a book around the begining of the new year. A sci-fi, highly character driven story set in a universe of my own making. (That was my shameless plug.)

I've also developed a couple of Kelly discussion topics I'm going to be bringing to the board over the next few days too that might be interesting.  Once again, thank you. I'd say you're far too kind, but I am pretty arrogant, so I probably deserved the praise... LOL. No, it really does mean a lot to me when somebody enjoys my work, so I appreciate it.

So, Kelly has been talking to Zaeed? (I haven't played LotSB yet, sadly).
That's... odd. I assume it's shrink talk, maybe Zaeed has PTSD?
But, if they've been getting... close, I demand another expansion where Shep and Zaeed challenge each other to a duel. With swords! :wizard:

First of all, you should definitely play LotSB if you get the chance. It's the best piece of DLC that Bioware has put out so far. Secondly, we've pretty unanimously agreed that Kelly's talking to Zaeed more in the capacity of a counselor or friend.

Now that you've mentioned it though, I would pay real money to see my Shepard initiate the duel by walking up to Zaeed and slapping him across the cheek with a glove.

Okay, so I had a thought the other day about something that might be fun to discuss. (And yes I am all too aware that sometimes the things that I think are fun come off as lame to other people, so I promise I won't take offense if nobody responds to this.):)

As I've been writing my Kelly fic, I've really started to notice how little we know about her. From playing through the game and spending time with her we've gotten a pretty good look at her personality, but aside from that we don't really no much.

So far as her actual background goes we know that she works for Cerberus. We know that she has a degree in psychology, and we know that she has a sister (nameless/ageless) who runs a dog shelter. Yep, I think that pretty much covers it.

I thought it might be fun to discuss some of the unknowns. The Kelly support thread is, after all in the portion of the forums devoted to, amongst other things, fan creations. Again, sometimes my sense of fun is somewhat skewed. I'll try and get the ball rolling here with a thought:

If you had to assign a background to her; Earthborn, Colonist, or spacer, what do you think it would be. I myself can't see the spacer option, but hey I could be wrong. I'm torn between Earthborn and Colonist. I suppose I lean more toward Earthborn simply because of the obvious quality of her education, but who's to say that there aren't some very good schools offworld as well.

I'm definitely interested in seeing what anybody else has to say. (Again, feel free to tell me I'm being lame as well. That's certainly your perogative.)

I imagine the old extra-solars like Terra Nova have some pretty good schools. That said, there are options in the Mass Effect universe not extended to Shepard's origin.

For no apparent reason, I feel like Ms. Chambers could have been born on Mars.

I hadn't thought about that actually. Liking the Mars idea. What other thoughts do we have out there?

I dunno, to me it seems she could have been born on a smaller colony, albeit one that is still under jurisdiction of the Alliance.

To explain Kelly’s strong affinity for the cause of humanity as well as her interest to understanding and interact with other alien culture made me think of the following possibilities:

Earth born:

-Kelly Chambers was born and raised in a moderately affluent home on Earth.

-Earth is considered the bastion of human society and culture.

-The existence of other technologically superior alien races is viewed with great

trepidation by many in government and abroad.

-Kelly’s has grown up believing that those differences can be bridged through mutual

understanding.

-Not wanting to engage in a life of politics and bureaucracy, or corporate intrigue Kelly

interns with a company who has received a sizable grant (covertly provided by

Cerberus) to the study and understanding of alien cultures.

I think Earth is ideal because I see Kelly coming from a more cloister background; she has lived most of her life mankind’s home world. Now she is looking to broaden her own outlook, while seeking to advance the collective interests of man.

Cool answers, and definitely something to think about. Dr Spoonbender, you've obviously put some thought into it, and I'll give you credit with some solid reasoning behind your answer. :)

That being said, and the background question is always open if anybody wants to contribute, I'm curious as to what you think her family is like. We know that she has a sister, no name or age, but what about the rest of her family. She has a very strong ability to empathize with people, so what factors, during her childhood or young adulthood do you think contributed to that, what do you think her family is like? Is the sister running the dog shelter her only sibling? Is she close to her parents?

Another chapter has been added to the Kelly fanfic “Amongst the Stars” by 19Hannah87:

Tag1702, it sounds like you are really taking a lot of effort to carefully develop a logical yet compelling back story for Kelly Chamber. I can see it takes a lot of conscious effort to write a story of such high quality.

I am looking forward to reading more opinions on Kelly's background and how she became the woman she is today.

As far as the backstory I'm developing for Kelly for my fic, I have a pretty decent idea of where I'm going with it. Some of it will be revealed as I continue to write chapters (New one should be online by Friday by the way - Another shameless plug :)) and some of it will remain on the backburner for a little bit.

Honestly, I love developing characters. I think that more than anything it's why I write, both in my own universe and the universes of others. The fact that I have such a clear playground with Kelly's character is actually a lot of fun. If, worst case scenario, she either doesn't return in ME3, or the writers fair to really expand on the character if she returns, then at least in my ME universe, the things that happen in the story will be canon. If they do expand on her and it contradicts what I write (Which is almost guaranteed to happen if they do) then at worst, my fic becomes an Alternate Universe or AU fic, and I can live with that as well.

Just because I'm writing the fiction, doesn't make the background I create more canon or real than anybody else's thoughts on the subject, and mainly that's what the discussion was about. Am extremely interested in what people have to say and thought I'd try throwing something a little different out there to get people talking on the thread. If it succeeds cool.

If it doesn't, well I had to give it a try. :)

I'd go with Colonist background. Kelly is clearly comfortable with aliens and this leads me to the idea that she might have got her education on a planet similar to Illium, among Asari. I get this feeling Asari are very good with the whole psychology thing and can prove to be great teachers. Kelly might also come from a wealthy family which would explain her place in one of the most fashionable Asari led Universities.

I like that answer. I also felt that she'd already had some exposure to alien culture, particularly Asari for some reason, before joining up with Cerberus.

Thank you Tag 1702 you have penned another excellent chapter.

It is maddening for me to consider how you simultaneously orchestrate dialog while exhibiting a conscious spatial awareness all the while and providing internal narration. You employ these elements so deftly that your story still remains fluid and ultimately very entertaining.

Just have to throw my two cents in, as i'm sure you all like kelly alot, but for me she is just a space secretary.

Hmm... Secretary... Even though I've thought the word "Admin Assistant", I'd never thought the word secretary before. Now I'm going to have to make sure Shepard gets her something for Secretary's Day. Thanks for the reminder!!

Actually, I can completely understand your opinion and how you feel about her, and appreciate the comment on the thread. Everybody connects with different characters for different reasons, and people fail to connect with certain characters for other reasons. It's all kind of a matter of taste and opinion.

For me, there are a couple of things that make Kelly "More than just a space secretary". First of all, I genuinely like the character. Her pleasant demeanor and open and caring nature provide a pleasant contrast to all of the deeply emoitonal states that the other characters pass through. She's ready to talk, and cares how Shepard is doing from the begining.

The other thing that I'll mention is that, as a bisexual, it's really nice to see that represented in a videogame to the degree that even if it's what a lot of people refer to as a "Light Romance" it's possible to pursue a same sex relationship with somebody who's not just considered "Same Sex" because their mono-gendered species appears suspiciously feminine.

Again, appreciate the comment though. It's good to hear from others sometimes, aside from those who are regular posters on the thread. :)
