She's thrown into the middle of one of the darkest scenarios once can imagine, staving off the extinction of the galactic community. Despite this, despite the fact the mission is suicidal, despite the fact that she has to regularly watch friends dive into the line of fire and indeed, despite her own capture and traumatic experiences...She is still able to shoulder not just her burdens but those of the entire crew.
Mass effect 2 is a dark story. Most of the characters around you have become grizled, cynical or wry towards it and it's easy, in Shepards place, to loose sight of the kind of idealism, hapiness and hope that you're fighting for in the first place.
In a dark sector on the galaxy, on a ship filled with haunting memories and beset on all sides...Kelly is a breath of fresh air, a break from the grit of it all. I think if we were really there, rather than playing from a distance, people would come to appreciate that far more and realise just how exceptional she is.

@ Cypher, I have wondered about that. I think TIM 'handpicked' her, because she is the perfect mix of insightfulness, idealism, and openness. She's much more tolerant of other alien races than the Cerberus officials we have come across so far, and yet, she is equally in love with the goals Cerberus has to further humanity. I think it's her idealism that made her think an organization like Cerberus is a good idea. She clearly doesn't know everything Cerberus has been behind, such as Jack's facility, but she knows enough to think Cerberus doesn't shy away from getting their hands dirty.
I think your analysis of Kelly Chambers is compelling. It has been hard for me to rationalize Kelly's involvement in Cerberus; when we compare Cerberus activities against Kelly's ideals they are clearly in conflict (despite her dog and cat analogy). Kelly displays no change of heart at the end of ME2, it will be interesting to see if she will continue her involvement with them.

You are absolutely right.
You don't need to be fighting alongside Shepard to help shoulder his burden. Kelly Chambers takes on the ancillary issues/tasks that Shepard would otherwise need to deal with so he can focus his efforts on what is important. The fact that she notices that Shepard has fish and offers to feed them is a lovely gesture.

I'd say the fact that there isn't an automatic feeder is ridiculous.

Oh, I totally agree, Yana. (Are you related to Hannah?
You know, I should create a male Shepard named Justin so he and Kelly can have a romance From Justin to Kelly. *rimshot* Heh heh heh...
Or maybe Zack. Zack and Kelly. Yay! Go, Bayside!
Ah, I just recalled another thought. After meeting Kelly, I thought to myself, "Funny, Dragon Age: Origins' Leliana is a sweet redhead, and Kelly is a sweet redhead. Both can be romanced by a female player character. Somebody at BioWare must really love redheads. :P"

I agree.
The fact that there isn’t an automatic fish feeder denigrates the game as a whole. I have often found myself listlessly wandering around hoping for a ship upgrade that feeds fish. I suggest that you post on this injustice in your own topic so it doesn’t stay hidden in a Kelly Chamber’s thread.
Good luck to you.

A smooch of gratitude from Kelly? I'm all for it!!! :-D
Yeah, I’m a sucker for a damsel in distress and Kelly is as charming as they come. Rescuing Kelly and the crew from the Collectors’ base was a heroic moment that put a smile on my face. To cap that moment off with a kiss from Kelly would have been sheer bliss. I may have had to escort the crew back personally.

I really like her comments on each squadmate (has she ever said what she thinks of Miranda & Jacob though?) and the way she says "It's always nice chatting with you" makes me all smiley. <3

Kelly is the only person aboard new Normandy who really cares about Shepard (well, at least about state of his/her mind if you don't persue her romance), the rest of the crew prefer lay all their problems on poor Shepard's shoulders and never express any desire how and what Shepard actually feels and wants.

I share a similar feeling. One of the things that I most love about Kelly Chambers is when I want to talk to her she always responds “I always have time to speak with you commander”. Kelly comments and reactions express genuine compassion and concern for Shepard and the crew. I find her a comfort, and it is nice to see (if you choose) how the romance builds over the course of the game.
