I'll get to Mass Effect, bare with me. Once upon a time, I played a game called Homeworld. Takes place in space. Excellent use of three dimensions. Anyway, I had built up a terrific fleet and was onto the final battle to reach the homeworld. The enemy fleet's before me. It was all or nothing. Hold nothing back, utterly destroy the enemy, win the battle. I threw everything I had at that fleet, keeping just a handful of defenders at the mothership. Then I noticed it: a second fleet heading straight for me from "below" while my main forces were concentrating on the threat up front. Like I said, excellent use of three dimensions. Suddenly I'm backpedaling my fleet, I'm being attacked on two sides, I'd wasted my best resources on the initial stage of the battle. The only resource I had left were the ships themselves, so half of them kamikaze'd into the enemy. And I won that battle. As Grunt would say, "it was glorious!"
I would kill for an epic battle like that in Mass Effect, but that's not the point. You ever have one of those intense fights where you're sure you'll be dead at any second, but you simply refuse to quit and reload? Maybe you're stubborn. Maybe the reload point was too far back and you had to repeat too much.
I'm playing Garrus's loyalty mission, trying to get to Harkin. I'm not a combat player and I'm playing the game on Insanity. I'm at the two heavy mechs and my other two squadmates are down without any more medigel. I have three rounds left on my sniper rifle, so I'm running on an SMG. I've been concentrating on the heavy mech closest to me because, well, it's closest to me. It's shields are annoyingly still up. That's when I realized that before my squadmates went down, we must have damaged the second one considerably. Three shots to the head with the sniper rifle and it's head comes clean off. The resulting explosion took out the second mech for me.
So yeah, I realize that mission might be a breeze to some people, but it wasn't for me. I was quite satisfied to end it like I did. Anyone else have moments like that?
