Hi! My question is simple: do u need to have liara or ashley with u on ur squad to activate romance sub plots or u just need to talk to them inside the normandy?

Completely not necessary to have them in your party on missions, though it may help on certain occasions. All you have to do is talk to them repeatedly while onboard the Normandy (especially after every main mission or a bunch of side-missions), and you will get the romance subplot towards the end of the game.
