I am *just* starting to delve into the world of modding & retexturing.  I've read up on a lot of tutorials walking me through the process of how to reskin an existing item or create a new item with new textures entirely, how to create the custom module to add them to the game, etc.  All of that is very helpful, but seems to be beyond where I'm at.

Currently, I'm staring at a .dds file in Photoshop & am completely overwhelmed with how to go about altering it without completely messing it up.

I have moderate experience in CS3, but know that my abilities are limited.  This is my first time attempting anything like this.  I'm looking for resources/tutorials/advice that can walk me through the aesthetic side of modding.  How to create new textures, change existing ones, all that.

Can anyone help?  Point me in the direction of where these kinds of resources exist, even if its not Dragon Age specific?

I'd start by looking at Photoshop tutorials, myself.  The better you know how to use Photoshop, the easier it is.  When I alter armour textures, I tend to use many layers and opacities with color overlays.  You can also snip pieces out of other armour textures and paste them in a new layer, then move them into a desired position.  Or even paste in brand new art, just make sure it'll look good on the model.  It's all about layers, layers and more layers.  I spend a lot of time going back and forth between DATool and Photoshop to check on appearances.

Just remember, unless you create a custom model, the shape of the armour itself will not change.  Just keep that in mind when you create new textures.

You've probably read these, but just in case.

I think this is a good explaination of how to use DATool

This tutorial explains how make the files you create in DATool work in the toolset

And this is how you create items for use in Single Player, which you should do before the above

Thanks, Aislinn. I've already perused all of those links, just am unused to working with pure textures, I guess. Feels like incredibly delicate work, & I'm used to using layers & such far broader. I guess some Photoshop tutorials would do me good. I suppose I was just surprised there weren't more "okay, you just want to touch this piece here, well, try this trick" kinds of tutorials around.

Maybe later on down the road I'll make a few tutorials, myself.  B)
