Differences between the ME1 and ME2 companions

What I'm trying to say is that I liked the characters and character interaction in ME1 better - communicating with the characters was certainly easier and they were more believeable. Why is everything so different in ME2?

For example, I thought some of the characters (specifically Ashley and Liara) in ME1 were incredibly boring. Ashley was your standard soldier with a touch of xenophobia and Liara was the cute bookworm girl. Both of them are decent characters in their own right but the problem is that the story didn't really allow them to develop much.
Compare this to Mass Effect 2, where not only do you have to spend time recruiting characters (thus learning about them and how they are), but you do loyalty mission for them, which, in most cases, strengthens the bond between player and character in ways that I don't think Mass Effect 1 ever dreamed it could.
I'll give you that Mass Effect 1 characters seemed more "normal," but unfortunately "normal" can easily translate to "boring." Archetypes are only a bad thing if they're presented in a cliche'd way, and I never got that impression in Mass Effect 2. While Garrus was your typical vigilante and Jack was your typical psychopath with a soft center, each one is presented in a compelling and believable way and I grew much stronger attachments to them than I did virtually anyone from Mass Effect 1.

I more or less agree. It's a pity too, because as we see with Garrus and Tali, there is much more to these characters than initially meets the eye.DarthCaine wrote...
ME1's squad mates were the worst characters BioWare has ever made IMO
I can only hope Bioware vastly expands Liara, Ashley and Wrex in Mass Effect 3, otherwise I'll be forced to lump that trio among the least developed characters in the trilogy.

For what it's worth, I completely agree with you. I enjoyed the ME1 squad much more than the ME2 squad. But as you can see, this forum is ceaselessly patrolled by a gang of pitbulls who will jump all over a thread containing even a whiff of pro-ME1 sentiment. That kind of talk isn't allowed here.brain_damage wrote...

I don't mind ME2 bashing, there is some problems with ME2 that need to be fixed with ME3, I just get annoyed when the same topic is made so many times and afterwhile it becomes clear the OP is trying to poll. Somethings need to be brought to Biowares attention.

Yep, because a logical, well thought out response as to why I feel differently than the OP is "jumping all over this thread."ratzerman wrote...

Nice try pal, but there are a great many of us who feel that the ME2 squad was more interesting. It's called opinion.

Also, I know I'm going to regret saying this but...why is it ALWAYS a person with a Liara avatar who comes in and says "Mass Effect 1 characters were far better."

Yea I just see a couple people stating there opinion.. No trolling or anything.. Personally I think the characters in ME1 were alright.. But I don't they got the depth that they eventually recieved in ME2.. Even though Garrus doesn't say much in ME2 I think I learned more about him in one loyalty mission and three talks than I did in the whole first game..ratzerman wrote...

Because the Liara fans always hate on ME2, there is only a few who don't.

YEAH! Garrus really kicked ass the way he had NO dialogue unless you wanted to screw his skeletal ass.
And Tali? What a badass floozy. Has all the character of a brick if you turn her down.
ME2 took two decent characters from ME1 and made them worse. Thats how bad ME2 is for character.

It doesn't seem that most people think ME1 characters were the worst BW ever made. They all do very well in the various fan polls on these forums, including the LIs, Ashley, Liara, Kaidan.
Also, I know I'm going to regret saying this but...why is it ALWAYS a person with a Liara avatar who comes in and says "Mass Effect 1 characters were far better."
Because Liara is that awesome to incite this kind of devotion from her fans.
