I have a somewhat High end PC and when i try to play my FPS starts at 60 and stays there for 10 seconds, then drops to 25-30 for 10 more seconds, then goes back up to 60 FPS Again. Its extremely annoying and makes the game unenjoyable for me, I tried updating GPU drivers, tried both dual and quad core CPU's, tried turning on ADVANCED PERFORMANCE for my HDD, i cant seem to find ANYTHING to fix the problem. It does the same EXACT thing no matter what resolution/graphics settings i have turned on. ANY suggestions that could help make this better so i can enjoy this amazing game would be much appreciated. Oh and btw nothing is overclocked, and nothing is overheating.... :(

Specs:
XFX Radeon HD 4890 1gb DDR5
6gb Mushkin DDR2 RAM
Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit
Hitachi Deskstar 1TB Sata II 7200rpm 16mb Buffer HDD
AMD Phenom II X4 940 (Black Ed.) CPU (Quad 3.0Ghz)(AM2+)
CCC 9.7 (Recommended Version for DA:O)
750 Corsair PSU

Have you tried disabling Vsync?

Does this problem occur even on the lowest settings? How about if you run in a window? ( just trying to narrow down possibilities )

A couple of things to try... turn off antialiasing (you won't notice a difference), Disable Superfetch. Other thoughts? Are you running Xfire? sometimes it has issues with certain games and certain video cards that causes stuttering. I don't personally have that with DA and an nVidia card but I have in the past with NWN2. A couple of other thoughts would be anti virus software and Firewall issues.

Yes it occurs on lowest setting/res in a window even with AA off. Not running Xfire, no antivirus and i dont think its the firewall. Whats Superfetch though?

Well I would not feel right with no virus protection on my system, I have a hardware firewall that handles additional invasive traffic, but I believe in virus protection.

My specs are similar to yours, but I really have not come across the issue you have had. Have you tried the latest ATI drivers? I know you are using the 'recommended' drivers, I know of the memory leak reported by some, but the game seems to run smoothly for me. I disabled anti-aliasing but kept Vsync. Everything set to high.

Except of course the issue of Shale no longer working in old saves but frankly that I'm chalking up to the issues with the recently released patch.

Here are my specs:

HP w2207h Monitor

Radeon HD 4870 512mb DDR5

6gb PC5300 DDR2 RAM 667MHz

Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit

Western Digital 750gb Sata II

2 Intel Xeon X5365 @ 3.00Ghz

SILVERSTONE OP1000-E 1000W PSU

yeah idk i think i just have ridiculously bad luck. I did try the most recent GPU drivers and they didnt change a thing. Neither did disabling Superfetch. Thanks for the suggestions Zerocarestate, but it must be something else.

I updated my Vid card and it stopped the studdering for a day, but now during the cut scenes the charaters are always talking over one and other. It's freaking annoying.

Sounds like you've got something running in the background that's chewing up CPU cycles (even though you've got a four-core processor).

Click Start, then Run..., then type in "MSCONFIG" and hit Enter. Then uncheck everything in the Startup tab and click Okay. Reboot then try the game again.

If that fixes it, you have to isolate which program that was booting automatically before was causing the problem. If it was your antivirus software, just play with it disabled or replace it with a lower performance-impacting one, like AVG.

Very odd...

I have a not very high end PC and my game runs like a charm.

Maybe there's a not yet discovered flaw in one of your PCs components? Or maybe your PC has trouble running on the highest video settings(I take it since you call it a high end PC you run on highest?). The first thing I'd do if my game was lagging would be to turn down the graphics.

I also noticed that my game lagged a slight bit if the resolution doesnt fit your screen size...it actually crashed completely when I tried 800x600.
