The Normandy is CLOAKED.... end of discussion, the Normandy is not designed for to duke it out with broadside skirmishes....

I dunno if that's what you're getting at, but random encounters in space would add to the game a bit. Though, then you could just spend all your time wondering through space and leveling up, then breezing through the storyline combat. Though, maybe if you spent fuel flying around like that it could put a limitation on it. Kind of like how if you run around the wastes in Fallout you take time away from the main mission, but can come across some really interesting stuff. Little easter eggs and weapons caches and stuff. I'd like to see that in a game again.
Dude nothing would get me to just blow through a Mass Effect game and I gaurentee you, and everyone here would not only enjoy that but they would still explore the whole universe.
Anyways, maybe ship battles would just upgrade you ship battle ability, and about the tech thing, its the future maybe they find a technology that could detect ships.
I am just saying it would be awesome! And I know the guys at bioware want to do it, they think its a good idea the trouble is developement time/cost. But bioware if you read this. . . . . .its worth it!

If Bioware wants to do a spaceship battle simulator, I'd rather they make a spinoff title where you manage a fleet of Alliance ships with dreadnoughts supported by cruisers and frigates, slugging it out against Batarians or other nuisances across the galaxy. Now that would likely be more fun than taking the Normandy and going pew-pew against another ship.

Except of course if you are playing a Bioware game. Which of course does just about everything right anyways. So I cant complain.
But I always thought the space type exploration, flight, and any kind of combat were strangely lacking for a game like this. I hope they do something regarding space in Swtor at least. Otherwise its gonna be a heck of a let down.

Imagine a mission in a fighter through Saturn's rings with one of it's moons in the background, or a fighter mission over one of the Wards, Presidium in the distance. It'd be amazing if it was done right.

if we had another ship, maybe. i dont think people would like that though
so no
anyway, how could pirates get tecnology to detect the normandy?
the only way it woud make sense is if it is a reaper pirate ship... and i dont think thats happening

Although hopefully far better done of course, and with a bit of tactics into it.
But Battle of the Citadel was awesome. Bit more fighter vs fighter, hopefully see different ships instead of just a dozen cruisers without any dreadnoughts.
Definitely would like to see them, but only as cutscenes...long ones anyways, not for me to take any part of them...unless is for me to decide certain actions like in the citadel what the overall plan will be and depending on that different things happen but overall, hands off scape battle. I dont want bioware diverting resources to making a quick mini game on a fighter at the expense of diluting half of the game to pull that off.

It would beat planet scanning at any rate

also the normandy is a frigate, while not suited to largescale combat, it should be able to handle small ship to ship engagements

the normandy has prototype stealth systems and is not made for combat
The Normandy is a warship so she is indeed designed for combat, just not the sort of combat where she'll get pounded by multiple frigates or something.

If they want to do it, only if they take a strategic approach, like Star General (from the Panzer General series (SSI)) ...
or if they really want a sim, only if they would buy the development team from the "X" Series.

the normandy is cloaked to heat sensors, not to visual observation. a pirate lying in wait in a system could easily spot the normandy by looking out the window (it was said in the first game)

Just how close do you think would the Normandy have to get to be visible on visual scanners? Do you have any idea how large a star system can be? Simply impossible, Normandy's crew would know about the pirates long before they would get close enough and would simply avoid them. Get over it. If you want to shoot stuff in space, I'd recommend Freelancer...

Getting stuck with random encounters where you have to shoot lasers at batarians sounds like it could get really annoying, really fast. I'd rather the devs focus their time, money and energy on providing consequences for your choices in ME1 and ME2 in the form of new quest hubs/ NPC's/ alliances / dialogue in the third game.
What's the point of putting together ship battles you can control if it's executed like a lame mini-game?

It would either be some basic 2D or 3D shooter, which would be hard to make convincing. Or would have to be some RTS, with a grid, range, movement speed etc. Cant see either working.
The furthest I would like to see them go down that route is maybe cut-scenes, where Shepherd makes choices in a battle e.g. shoot the landing ships or concentrate on the mother ship, where there is a clear choice involved (like on the first ME when you had to choose to save the council or not). That would fit nicely and wouldnt deviate too much from the established game mechanics.

I miss the Wing Commander games, so any decent space combat, even if it were really a minigame, would be most welcome.
