While it all sounds quite cool, I'm not actually sure this is a good idea.
It is not necessarily a good idea because if the game becomes too combat heavy, people will complain about how far the game has gotten from the RPGish elements of the first title.
And they will complain despite the fact that the main character is a miltary combatant and the storyline pretty much takes place during a war.

Bioware making crappy space combat like crappy planet exploring and scanning? No. I want ME3 to be an RPG.
thank God not everyone thinks like you. I personally love the planet exploration in ME1, it might me a bit tedious but it was a good break from the action. better populated planets would be good, but then again thats why its called uncharted space exploration.
I would DEFINATELY like to see some space battles!!! lets keep this thread alive!
Great Idea dude!
just think you could get cool upgrades for your ship, maybe even change its looks a bit?
@Kid_SixXx : I see what you are saying but like I say above if you bring ship upgrades into it and who knows what else it might work...

You have point there, the uncharted space exploration was far better than the mini scanning, I gave a sense of vastness and I would welcome it back if the planetes were more fleshed out and the side missions as detailed as ME2 and less copy paste like ME1. The thing is, I prefer the devs to focus in making ME a better rpg with less gimicky features. Would it really be worth to be in the game if the space combat was a terrible chore?

true, thats a damn good point, would want it to be a chore. maybe they could make it random encounters? like when you are travelling around fareldan in Dragon Age and have random fights. you could have space battles while traversing the galaxy.
also I really hope ME3 has more roleplay elements that ME2, only played it a little but i didnt like the face that I couldnt change my squad mates armour, i mean that is fundamental RPG, not to mention that everyone who plays this now has the same looking squad mates. no more cool armours like Wrex's Beserker armour

I'm not saying the planet scanning was good by any means, but neither were the driving sections. Ship combat is a bad idea because it's very likely that this mini-game or whatever you want to call it, would be very poorly implemented. It would probably just boil down to holding down a trigger at an enemy ship without any dodging or movement.
Flight or space sim games are a bad comparison here because that's what the entire game there is about. ME3 is about space sure, but it's not about controlling space battles. The core gameplay consists of combat and dialogue and I really think that the finale of the series would be best concluded by focusing these two aspects.

Very well, fighting cloaked adds a whole new level to space fights. You can secretly ambush your enemies... I hope the Normandy gets in a fight so I can test it!!
(loosely based on something Garrus says in ME1)

Oh, don't get me wrong. I personally was pretty bummed when I saw the list of upgrades for the SR2 during the pre-release game buzz but also noted that there would be no player controlled ship combat in the game.
I I really wanted to be able to fire the Javelin Torpedos and Thanix Cannons myself. Instead, the ship upgrades are just a device to get you to trigger more conversations with your crew mates that will generate ideas that will in turn, make planet scanning a must-do activity....
...if you want your squadmates to survive the suicide mission..
Then there is EDI. All that cool talk about her space combat capabilities and you can't even control it yourself as a player. That sucks.
I think space combat would be a great addition to the series, but I can understand why a vocal amount of the fanbase would object strongly.

This. For once I'd like for the space combat in the game to consist of something other than cut scenes.
Perhaps the credit generating device in the next title could be earning money for keeping shipping lanes free of pirates and mercs or selling the hulks of pirate craft you have whupped up on for salvage?
Then you could earn Paragon or Renegade points (and extra EXP to grind out more levels since the number of missions is limited) depending on your decisions in combat. (ie. disable vs. destroy. Taking prisoners vs. killing entire pirate or merc bands.)
Hmmmm.

..if you want your squadmates to survive the suicide mission..."
spoiler dude! now i know how to save my squad
I can also see why it would be a BAD thing, like Dick Delaware said it might shift focus away from the important ME basics and that would be bad. the other thing is that if it isnt done right it'll be a chore like people have mentioned.
if the devs do decide to put this in ME3 it would have to be an "all or nothing" attempt

I will admit: I too have thought, "Oh man, wouldn't it be cool if..." And yes, my friends have voiced the same, recalling space fighting games like the X-Wing/TIE Fighter games, as well as space trading games like Escape Velocity.
But then we always get back to the same realization: Getting an entirely new gameplay mechanic working takes time. It took Bioware two games just to get real-time shooting to feel right for Mass Effect 2, which makes sense given its history in RPG mechanics. If Mass Effect 3 had space combat, it would not be the best space combat Bioware could make, and Mass Effect 3 should be the amazing, climactic conclusion to a trilogy.
Plus, let's face it, space sim games will not make nearly as much money as another shooter RPG, and Bioware deserves to make a mint every now and then.
I would love to see more involved space sim games as spinoffs in the Mass Effect universe eventually (right alongside my long hoped for stealth action prequel starring Thane, "Splinter Drell"), but for now, I don't see room for it.

As long as it is fun and not over done it would be good. It should be a little extra minigame but it would also be fine not to implement it. I enjoyed the shooting in KotOR. Even the air comabat in Jade empire was ok.
Personally, I felt it got annoying. Every time I wanted to go somewhere, I'd have to use the turret. It got irritating after the tenth time. I just want to go to Manaan, leave me be, Sith! I'm glad they cut it out in the sequel.

I miss the Wing Commander games, so any decent space combat, even if it were really a minigame, would be most welcome.
It would beat planet scanning at any rate
This = win.
Still play those games.
