I have to admit, Woo's comment made me laugh. It isn't often something like this is lampshaded so painfully. In any case, I think we can move away from that. My comment at least wasn't meant to spark discussion. :pinched:

@AntiChri5 - That isn't a unicorn?

@In general - I forgot to mention earlier... I can't believe Waluigi was compared to Dan. I actually use Dan once in awhile as a lark. I've even won some tough matches with him and been accused of cheating because if it's Dan winning, it must be cheating...

But this Waluigi guy just looks embarrassing. Wario at least had this whole "I'm a greedy muffin and hate Mario" thing going. Waluigi says what? Me too? :P The guy looks like an imp. I guess that appearance fits for the role of an evil sidekick, but I can't help look at his nose and ears and shake my head.

Really? This is the direction we're taking this thread?

Where else did you see it going?

Doomed from the start man, doomed from the start.

The thread was fine until people jumped on the "he looks like a rapist" bandwagon.

I dont want to sound arrogant (even though i am) but i really saw this coming. Mostly because he looks like a rapist.

How close are we to getting locked? (always interested in the thought process of you guys and how much you are willing to tolerate/whether or not you have a rigid criteria)

Nintendo likes keeping him in the closet. Is he really in that may more games than Wario?

I don't remember seeing Waluigi in any of my WarioWare games...

You should know, Seagloom, a horn doesn't make all that much difference Or does it?

I haven't seen him in anything besides the MP games. I played one Wario game, don't recall seeing him in it.

A unicorn without an alicorn is a horse. A sparkly, decorated and unbearably adorable horse, but a horse nonetheless. Yes, it does make that much of a difference. ;)

Thanks to Robot Chicken....I can never look at her the same. Funny as heck though!

On topic: Can anyone with some understanding of Japanese explain the "Wa" designation to me? Does that syllable act as a prefix meaning "evil" or "opposite" or something?

That was me. Except Dan is pretty awesome. My buddy and I love to have Dan vs. Dan fights in Puzzle Fighter.

my understanding of the "Wa" prefix is akin to "Bizaaro" superman, or opposite/mirror-image version. Its not necessarily evil, but since Mario and Luigi are inherently good characters, their polar opposites would have to be evil.

No, "wa" is a particle in Japanese. As far as my Japanese knowledge goes, it does not have any significant meaning.

It may have something to do with how Wario is the opposite of Mario. So they stole the slightly clever "Wario" and applied it to Luigi, creating "Waluigi".

I didn't take enough Japanese lessons to consider myself knowledgeable in this, so I'm with Chiliztri. The closest thing I can think of to explain this is warui, which means bad or inferior. But that's more bad as in lousy than bad as in wicked.

There isn't any clear word for evil to my knowledge. Usually I see ankoku thrown around a lot in games to describe the evil sides of things but even that isn't a perfect analogue to our concept of evil. Someone else with better knowledge of the language might know more...

LOLOLOL. What the heck does Daisy do anyways? She is just an annoying rival in Mario Kart and MP.

Ahah, I think Waluigi might be in Mario Kart.! Can't be sure though. Lemme start my DS and see.

Puzzle Fighter. Aaah, I loved that game. Wait, when you say puzzle fighter do you mean the fighting game spin-off or the original puzzle game? I mean the latter. I liked Dan in that game, but whenever someone picked him I'd go with Felicia who is pretty much as weak.

In the fighting game version it's like the full games. I used him when I felt in the mood. I don't think I've ever had a serious Dan vs Dan fight. :pinched:

And warui can be turned into sorry, as in lousy, or sorry, as in apologetic. Too many different meanings!

Hmm, though warui could explain the "Wario" and "Waluigi" thing. Since they are kind of lousy.

I didn't know there were others. (FYI the HD upgraded version on the 360 is pretty cool, got that one too.)

Edit: Oh forgot to mention....there's no such thing as a serious Dan fight. We mostly just laugh our "you know whats" off about who gotten beaten the worst. Major smackdowns are a given with only one gem color.

@Chiliztri - That was my thinking exactly. Sort of a way to imply in their names that the pair are less than the characters they are based on. There are so many other ways the designers could have gone if they wanted to imply evil in a serious way.

I have that for the PSP, I love Felicia though. Have her sitting on my wall with Rex Raptor.

Wasn't Daisy Luigi's girlfriend or something? Peach's sister or were they friends?

without any understanding of japanese, i think the above is the most likely case. they needed to make an opposite version of Mario (a villain) so they flipped the "M" into a "W" and Wario was born. In order to keep some level of consistency, they just applied the "W" to Luigi. But he couldn't be Wuigi (as cool as that might be), so they just crammed an "a" in there so it would be phonetically appealing.

just my guess

She's quite deadly in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. One of my favorites as well actually.

I love that game. One of my favorite PS1 games of all time, hands down. I included it in my top three in that top 5 favorite games of all time list. Under the Playstation section, that is... not out of everything. One of my friends and I used to spend whole afternoons competeting in it. It was a nice change from Street Fighter Alpha 2 at times. I don't own a 360 so I miss out on that version. I wasn't even aware they rereleased it. :( Ah well, there is always playing it on my PS1 or PC.

There was a spin-off that came out only in Japan, far as I know. I once owned it for the Sega Saturn. It's a bit fuzzy now, but it had most, if not all of the cast from the puzzle game thrown into an actual fighter. They were all still chibi sized and stages remained cutesy versions of themselves. It was simplified compared to Darkstalkers or Street Fighter but still a fighting game that required practice to master.
