  •  Mass Effect 2, Steam version
  • v1.01
  • Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.20GHz/ 3199 MHz/ 2.87 GB
  • NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT/ 512 MB/ 197.13 (Driver Version)
  • WinXP SP3/ DX 9.0c (March 2009 or later)
Problem Details:

Game crashes at certain specific points in the game. Game freezes for a second at most, goes to black as it shrinks to desktop, then Windows asks about sending an error report and it's all over. So far I have encountered this problem at three points:
  • During the Reaper IFF mission, during the Husk onslaught when I believe the second pair of Scions shows up. For reference there is a Medi-gel and Power Cell right past where the Scions show up that once appreached triggers another onslaught and pair of Scions. **I used Steams's "Validate game files" feature and was able to make it past this part after replacing 15 files.**
  • Shortly after the previous point, after the Geth Legion gets killed/incapacitated while fiddling with the Reaper Core controls. The first three Husks are taken out without issue, then I am free to access the laptop or whatever on the left for 1000 credits or just move to where i trigger the next onslaught of Husks. at some point in killing the Husks it decides to crash, usually it seems as I am killing one. It appears as though in both this situation and the previous that it may have been killing a specific husk that crashes the game.
  • Right when switching from loading screen to 3D mode for Jacob's loyalty mission. The amount of time it takes to crash after the loading screen turns on is exactly that of what it would normally take to load an expedition onto a planet. I have not checked this after using Steam's verification feature as I have been stuck in the Reaper IFF mission.
I can provide Log dumps if necessary. I have searched the forums and not found a situation or solution that seems to fit my case. Thanks for your time and assistance, this game is too awesome to just say "Oh well" and toss aside.

This might be relevant, but are you using forced anti-aliasing via the NVIDIA control panel? I kept crashing right before running into Jacob for the first time, and turning it off fixed the problem.

I looked at the control panel and all antialiasing options are either off or application-controlled. The ME2 config tool doesn't have an antialiasing setting so I'll try setting it to "off" before next time I play the game. Hopefully Ill check it out tonight. Thanks for the tip!

Nope, game still crashed upon the death of a Husk at about seemingly the same point in the fight.

I've got the ME2, Collector's Edition and I'm having the same type of problem. Computer rebooted itself when I attempted to wake up Grunt on the Normandy and I have yet to be able to begin the Kasumi DLC. Whenever I try to interact with the Advertisement on the Citadel, the computer reboots. 4 times tried = 4 time rebooted.

Ah, mine doesn't reboot though I've had that problem with other appplications. By the way, I'd kill for your computer without Vista XD

yah, it is a nice rig. But I've never seen a game cause a reboot of the computer. sure blue screen of death or program just stops responding, but for the whole system to shut off and turn back on? First time for me.

Actually I've been getting BSOD only recently and that's outside of games (seems to have stopped). I've pretty much always had that problem with some games that it instantly shuts off and reboots. Don't now how to fix it though, but fortunately it's not like my problem that happens in the same spot every time so I can't continue the game. Except in your case D:

I lowered software acceleration and reinstalled the game according to EA's directions, no luck.
