1.  Product: Mass Effect 1
  a. Version: PC Version
  b. Media: Digital Download (via Steam), downloaded this week
2.  System Details
  a. Processor: Intel Pentium D 3.4 GHz (2 CPUs), 2 GB RAM
  b. Video: NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GTX 512 MB; 3/16/2010 Drivers (6.14.0011.9713)
  c. Sound: SoundBlaster X-Fi Audio (Latest Driver- 6/18/2007)
  d. Operating System: Windows XP (SP 2, fully updated)
  e. DirectX: DirectX 9.0c
3.  Problem Details: When first loading the program, getting a General Protection Fault (GMatrix2D Swap()… etc.) error message, and the game will not open.  I understand that this is a common error, but I’m not quite sure how to fix it.

I have confirmed that all of my drivers are up to date, and don’t see any other conflicts.  I have seen the other posts
referring others to the General Protection Fault thread(s), but it seems that advice/responses there either suggesting updating DirectX or drivers- both are fully updated in my case.  The EA support pages were not of any help, either, as the only suggestion is to update drivers.

If there are any other details that I can provide, please let me know.  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated- thank you in advance.

You can't use any Geforce driver that old.  That's why we want to know about it, because the old ones were totally incompatible with the UT3.5 engine.

He's playing ME1, isn't that the 3.0 engine?

You're right, and the same thing goes for that. nVIDIA had an entire year and a half's worth of incompatible drivers when ME-1 the PC version was new.

When you say I can't use an old driver- are you referring to the video card itself, the driver version, or the update date? The driver is fully updated (3/16/2010 version).

Well, holy whatever!  That was the sound driver's date!  I must have needed a nap today (I got up very early, and it's now fairly late at night.  I was wrong, and cannot guess why you are getting a GPF after all.  I know that the 190.xx driver worked, though, and a lot of them after about 182.xx or so.

Let me lie down for about seven hours, and maybe the old brain will shift gears!

Thanks- I appreciate any thoughts you (or anyone else) might have. I know that my video card is not exactly top of the line anymore- but I was really surprised when I had problems. Everything is as updated as it can be at this point, from a driver perspective.

One thing I did -not- mention; I also have an Ageia PhysX (100) card installed. That driver is updated, too; however, I know from looking at other posts that PhysX seems to have caused problems for others; might that be it?

Thanks- I tried the same (twice, in fact) with no luck. Uninstalled all drivers, reinstalled them, uninstalled and reinstalled the game, disabled my PhysX card- nothing seems to work, I'm afraid.
