So, pretty basic question, but are the shield powers useful for squadmates, particularly on insanity? I understand that the shields go pretty fast on insanity anyway, and that the long cooldowns prevent the squaddies from using other abilities. So, do they really increase the squads survivability, or are they a waste of points?

I've done several insanity playthroughs. I usually put 2-3 points as leftovers into a shield type. Its more important to control your squads position. Miranda and Mordin are especially bad for ignoring cover and running into the enemy. That means death in approx. 1 second.

Depending on your own char and your playstyle its often best to just leave your team well behind cover and use them as extended ability characters. If you play vanguard then you can often leave them to their own AI as theres a balance between staying far enough ahead that all the enemies focus on you and giving your squad free hits, and going too far ahead and your squad being instantly wiped out.

Remember that if you position a squadmate ahead of you, then the enemies will focus on them and allow you to get in free hits - Meat shields!
