Might be a dumb question, but have you run the configuration utility? Not sure if it's a requirement but you may want to give it a shot.

But i did notice something, when the installer was extracting movie.rar, it just went up to 85.9 percent then it tells me to insert disc 2. Does that happen to everyone ? or is it just me ?

Try running the game exe directly instead of through the launcher.
You can always extract the rars manually and overwrite the files if you suspect it didn't extract properly.

I thought the game was on one DVD only?
How did it complete the installation?

Hmm mine is on 2 dvd's. So I didn't react to it being anything strange when it asked poster to insert dvd 2.

Of course you are correct.
I just realized that even my DDE was a 10.8 GB download. For some reason i was under the impression that it was only a bit above 8.
Having an archive being split between two discs is strange...

@CodesT:
have you tried to look at the second disc, if there is another piece of Movies.rar? If there really is, you might try to have Winrar do some magic merging them and extracting again. Or have you done that already?

I am having what may be the same problem.
I previously loaded and played the Collector's Edition game on my current computer, but had to replace my system HD recently.
OS: WinXP SP3
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 @ 2.66GHz
RAM: 2 GB
VIDEO: NVidia GeForce GTX 260 running the 197.13 drivers
AUDIO: Reatek HD
DirectX: 9.0c (Mar 2009)
I installed the game without incident, but when I clicked on the PLAY icon, I get a momentary hourglass, then nothing. No crash notification or popup of any kind. I do hear the 'ping' sound the *first* time I press the PLAY button. Further presses generate no sound, though the background music WAV continues to play.
I tried uninstalling, checked the registry to make sure it was clean, deleted my preferences and saves from My Documents, then reinstalled a second time, with the same results.
I did activate my Cerberus Network card (and downloaded some DLC from my Dragon Age game) the first time I played the game. I did not apply the patch back then, IIRC.
I tried launcing the game from the MassEffect2.EXE file in the Binaries folder. I get a popup that says:
"This Application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem."
It has not... and yes, I have run the configuration program, both before and after applying the patch, both to no effect.
I also checked my Firewall, and both Mass Effect 2 and the Mass Effect 2 Launcher are listed as exceptions.
In the way of further information, I tried to launch Dragon Age : Origins... The DA:O Launcher does the exact same thing as the ME2 Launcher.

Updated my graphics driver to the 197.45 version. No improvement.
Tried yet another reinstall, this time installing into the default directory. No improvement.
Another Update : Installed the 5.10.0.5904 Drivers for my Realtek HD sound (was using 5.10.0.5324 )
I *had* been able to run the game with the older drivers before, but i'm trying anything at this point.
No improvement.

I had the exact same problem. Try going here. This is what finally fixed it for me; though I never bothered to try to figure out what exactly caused the conflict. I also unloaded my antivirus and shut off my firewall before starting the game. Once I had my game loaded I could then just alt+tab out and start it all back up again. One of those things, or a combination of them, stopped the freezing problem for me. And to forestall the inevitable comments, no, it was not the firewall--at least not that alone. I had my exceptions set up perfectly, and even tried shutting it down by itself and the freezing still occurred.
Incidentally, this makes me sad. I love playing games on my PC and I won't be giving it up any time soon--at least not entirely. But problems like this one (problems that only a small percentage of people have and which are therefore relatively unheeded--except by the great player community here!) are slowly turning real PC gaming from mainstream to something that only enthusiasts pursue.
I bought this game for PC thinking I would get the same caliber experience as I did with DA:O; the community mods and the increased play flexibility made the PC version of DA:O far and away the better platform choice. So when I picked up Mass Effect 2 I suppose I thought, given the developer, I could expect a similar situation. Unfortunately, for me at least, I could have gotten the exact same experience (with the possible exception of a barely noticeable difference in graphics quality) on the 360, and saved myself the two weeks of being unable to play while I waited for replies from the admittedly ultimately helpful and courteous but painfully slow EA support. I understand that the practically infinite combinations of hardware and software variables on different PCs make guaranteed universal compatibility impossible to achieve, but usually there is at least some kind of payoff for PC users that makes the tweaking, prodding, and freaking-out worth it. Modding tools, exclusive DLC, noticeably increased play flexibility (i.e. the tactical view in DA:O) any one of these things would have made me happy to spend the hours and hours pouring over these boards looking for an answer to my seemingly unique issue. Instead I had to gently finesse my game into starting each time just so I could get the exact same play experience that I could have gotten while sitting on my couch with the 47" and surround sound.
When presented with an identical experience, people like me are going to start choosing console versions over PC, if only to ensure that we can actually play the game when we open it. This changes little for the game developers since they're getting my money no matter what. But if fewer and fewer people use the PC as their primary platform, hardware developers and PC component retailers will suffer--driving up prices and further reducing the number of people who can afford to keep the hobby. The boom in netbooks, pad devices, and internet-capable phones will only speed this process. Eventually (10+ years from now) the PC will cease to be a viable platform, further narrowing the potential competition and contributing to the stagnation of games and media in general.
I guess what I'm trying to say is: give PC users something else to make all this trouble and constant upgrading expense worth our while, developers! You did it with DA:O. What makes Mass Effect so different?
Rant = off

I am having the same problem. When i click play it freezes on the loading screen. Rondo the link you provided does not have the steps for windows 7. I am really sorry i bought windows 7! what a waste of money. I thought it was supposed to be less of a resource hog than Vista but it is far worse! The problem is probaby with Windows 7 sucking up all the cpu resources and causing the game to freeze. Let me know if you find any solutions to this CodesT. Thanks

I was able to get past the freeze by installing the update 1.01 from the website. I still hate windows 7 though!
