It's likely that I am having a different issue then the one Randoeastman and KCR were having, as I was not experiencing a freeze at all, and applying the patch had no effect.

In an attempt to clarify: The game is not locking up. I am not getting a 'not responding' message in the task manager. No error popups, no blackscreen, no freezes.

The game is simply failing to launch.

I reformatted my gaming HD and reloaded the game. No effect.

I *suspect* I may be missing something, but i've no idea what that might be. I tried downloading the latest Visual C++ Runtime distributable package, but that also had no effect.

Hoping someone can offer a solution before I cave in and reload my OS... i'd rather not go that far, as it is a serious PITA, *and* I did it less than a week ago... I suspect it won't make any difference in my current problem.

You are aware of the second "Repair" option on a Windows install CD?  Reinstall over the top, leaving stuff all in place?

Never had much luck with that actually fixing anything before, though I suppose it's faster than a full reinstall...

The thing is, all my other programs and games are working just fine... all except ME2 and DA:O.

I suspect that those games are looking for something that isn't on my computer... something that got put on there in the 3 years since I put the computer together. Problem is, I have no idea what that might be. Either that or it's some kind of Registry problem, but I've searched and removed pretty much all the references I could find to it before eash re-install.

"Something must be missing" got me thinking, so I checked the Optional Software updates unter Windows Update.

Seems the .NET framework software is still listed as optional. I installed it and it solved my problem.
