I don't know if this is even the best forum to ask this, but is it possible to use the toolset, save game editing or whatever means to change your character's name, without creating him/her anew?

Yes, it's in PLAYERCHAR -> PLAYERCHAR_CHAR -> OBJET_NAME

It will look like this : ######:YourName

Edit the string without changing the number and it should display just fine in-game.

open up your character and on the object inspector there is a section that says name double click on that and type in the name. after you do that you will have to delete the character in the game and replace it.
